I talked to Sarah Wisner who was aware of the original article in the
Green Bay Press-Gazette, but who was not, alas, very aware of Usenet
or this newsgroup. According to Sarah, Joel is considering ending his
tenure on camera to concentrate on producing and writing but a date for
that change has not been chosen. She asked that I forward hard copy of the
posting that started this thread and some of the followups. I plan to do
this, but will not include any articles containing copyright notices or
who's authors don't wish me to. E-mail me if you have an objection to my
including any of your posts in this thread. (Maybe this introduction can
get them interested in getting their own account.)
About half an hour after talking to Sarah, Jim Mallon called me to find out
what was going on. His tone was a little more guarded than Sarah's, which
I believe was his frustration at having to stomp on this rumor once more.
He was curious why an article printed 6 months ago was once more making the
rounds. (This is what makes me believe they've dealt with the aftermath of
this story before.) So I explained to him about the original post and the
followups.
Jim told me that Joel has decided that at some as yet undertimined point in
the future he will no longer appear on camera during episodes but will
stay on to produce and write, just as the article says. Jim made it clear
that this is entirely Joel's decision and that if he wishes, he's free to
change his mind. So it looks like we'll still see Joel Robinson during
season 5 but after that, who knows.
Like all of you, I'll sure miss Joel's interacting with the bots as much as
his delivery of the material during the movies and I personally hope he has
a change of heart and stays a while longer.
Well, that's my first usenet posting. What d'ya think sirs?

Thank's much for the information, this "Who would take Joel's
place thread" had no end in sight. I guess what I'd like
to see is the series wrap up (if the cast is going to break-up),
and then eagerly await more fruits of the talent of Joel Hodgson
& Co. I would *love* it if Mystery Science Theater could top
the Bob Newhart Show series finale...
But it's a bit early to put the series in the grave (or so I hope),
for now I'm going to check my mailbox for some classic episodes. :-)
By the way was there any news on syndicating MST3K? It would
be nice to watch it out here at school then have to keep bugging
my sister to tape the episodes every week for me back home...

It was informative, to the point, non-accusatory and non-judgemental,
and cleared up a lot of open questions. You've got a LOT to learn
about how things are done in USENET world, me lad.
