I woke up last night. Echoing in my head was Houlihan yelling at Pierce.
Blake was out sick, and Houlihan was yelling about how she's next in
command.

Wish the heck I knew. I totally enjoy / enjoyed MASH, and I'd love to
discuss it with more people.

Potter: Why, I remember a time in doublyew doublyew one, when we were in the
Ardennes forest. People were mighty quiet. Then the Germans came over the
hill, and they all perked up.
Rizzo: How the hell should I know?
Houlihan: Sure is spooky.
Pierce: Snuggle closer to me, drives the spookies away.
Burns: Pierce, you're illegally consorting with a superior officer!

Aargh, stop it, this quote is repeated enough times in the series to be
annoying on its own. :)

Somewhat aloof and disinterested. He came into my aunt's toy shop in
Clearwater, FL around 1984-85 while I was there visiting her. I said
hello and was going to say it was nice to meet him (I never mentioned
anything about MASH of any of his TV appearances) but he just muttered
"hello" without looking up and walked around the shop for a couple of
minutes and never made eye contact with me or my aunt. He left
without buying anything.

What would I have considered impressive? If he had been like a normal
person and looked back at us and at least pretended like we were
there. It wasn't like he was really rude, but just not a friendly
type of person. He was about as 180 degrees removed from his Radar
persona as I could imagine. It wasn't like we were hounding him for
autographs or anything, so I don't know what his issue was, and after
all these years, I don't really care.

You never can know what the problem is in those cases. Maybe he was just
having a bad day. Maybe he had just found out W*A*L*T*E*R had not been
picked up for a series. Maybe 12-13 years of constant recognition had
taken their toll. You just never know.

Yes, that sure sounds disappointing. Makes me wonder if he's got a diagnosis of depression or something? Sounds impolite, in any case.

I don't know. As I said, after almost 30 years, I don't really care.
But impolite would be an appropriate word to describe his demeanor
that day. After my post, I recalled my aunt (who died in 2009) had
said to him something to the effect of, "Thanks for stopping by. Have
a nice day." as he left and he didn't even acknowledge her as he
walked past the counter and out the door.

I did like him in character as Radar, but always thought he was
somewhat of an ass when he appeared on Match Game. I recall a couple
of times they had to throw questions out because blabbering Gary said
something (I specifically recall something about swimming) while the
panelists were writing their answers that gave an unfair advantage to
one of the contestants. It seemed he was always hogging for airtime
on MG, which again, seemed way out of character for the Radar I liked.

In contrast to that, I briefly met Kevin Costner in a crowd back in
2006 as he was making his way to the stage to give a free outdoor
concert. He shook my hand, and he seemed like a really happy,
friendly sort of guy.

Yeah, anything is possible, but as I said in a post a few minutes ago
to Stormin Mormon, even when he appeared on Match Game, I didn't
really care too much for his "Look at me! Pay attention to me!"
behavior on the show. It seemed he was frequently interrupting and
talking over other panelists, and yammering about nonsense while
panelists were filling out their cards. When I would watch reruns of
the show, whenever he was on (usually as a substitute for Charles
Nelson Reilly) I changed the channel.

Now when Loretta Switt was on MG, she was genuinely funny and
respectful of the other panelists. Same with McLean Stevenson.
