Hi!

Does anybody know the name (and more) of the East Indian actress who played
a nurse in several episodes of MASH and also is seen running in the opening
sequence. I don't think she ever had a line but she's often seen in the
background.

Thanks in advance

There may be an East Indian nurse running in the background of the opening
shot, but I'd be she never appeared in any episode of the series. It's my
understanding that Gene Reynolds was never able to locate any of the actresses
who are seen in the opening titles of the show running toward the camera. The
guess is that they were probably extras working a one day gig...and therefore
they wouldn't be listed on the daily reports that indicate what actors were
employed on that day. (And how do you know she's East Indian?)

By the way, the footage of choppers in the main title of the tv show is
actually from stuff that was shot by Altman for the feature film. It looks
scratchy and ratty because it had probably been handled too much in editing
before the TV series people inherited it. And Gene had always planned on
replacing it with new stuff if M*A*S*H got picked up. However once the show
was on the air, he got superstitutious about it, and never changed it.

There was only one nurse we lost track of after shooting the opening titles. I
can get more information on her if anyone positively has to know more about
her.

All the other women in the title sequence continued to work in the series as
nurses.

The "East Indian," is in fact a black American. Her first name is Gwen.
Again, I can get her full name if, etc.

Wasn't Gwen a part of the rotation of extra nurses? I think I remember
seeing her in a few eppys. I liked the character, if I'm remembering
Gwen correctly.

Gwen was in countless episodes, but we never assigned a character to her, don't
think she ever had a scrap of dialogue.

If I remember correctly, her mother was the founder of Fatburgers, a popular LA
eating franchise.

Maybe I am thinking of the wrong character, but wasn't Gwen the nurse who
talked to the guy that Hawkeye told they must have accidentally given him
"black" blood so he was turning color. I don't remember exactly what she
said to him, but there was something like"Right on, brother, I won't tell
anybody," in the conversation.

Dear Larry (and everyone else), many thanks for answering my question!

And yes please, I would very much like to know more of this Gwen - her
career, if she's made other screen appearances, her age, her family and so
on.
To me, she's always been a part of MASH, not only because of the title
sequence, but also because of all her other appearances during the years. I
don't think she ever had a line, but she is seen working or walking in the
background in several episodes.
In the earlier seasons, she seems to be dating Klinger at various times,
for example in episode 31 (Local Indigenous Personnel), when she's sitting
very close to Klinger at the movie-screening in the mess tent.
In episode 117 (Movie Tonight), she's one of the four nurses that intended
to date some airforce-men but decides to stay in the mess tent.
I'm sorry for calling her East Indian, but I guess she's of East African
origin. Of course I always understood that she's an American citizen.

Thanks in advance
Mikael

There was another episode (or maybe the same one) where she said to the surgeon
who had asked for more retraction: "My little arms are breaking all ready." or
something to that effect. If I remember correctly (never a safe assumption), in
the episode about the soldier who was afraid of getting the "wrong color" she
had several lines. Not many, but more than one. The other one I remember right
off the top of my head was something like, "Watch your mouth, soldier! I don't
care if you are passing, I'm a lieutenant!"

There was also an episode where Frank made her cry in OR, but I can't remember
which one that was.

Well, I got the first letter of the name right at least. Oh well, now I have
to figure out who it is you are actually talking about.

I remember Gwen dancing with Klinger in the episode Officers Only. Don't
remember her ever speaking. A previous poster is getting her mixed up
with Ginger (Odessa Cleveland).

When Henry reviews the troops his last time he calls one of the nurses
"Gwen". Is this her?

Metcalfe must not be very superstitious, then; I distinctly remember that
that shot changed for Season 6. That's the first indication I get, when
watching a rerun, that an episode is Season 6 or later. Season 8 or later
if the back of Burghoff's head isn't in the very first shot. If Burghoff
and the original chopper shot are both there, then the first indication of
whether it's pre- or post- Season 4 is whose name appears right after
Alda's...

No, that was a nurse we called "Ginger."

The young woman in the opening titles was a professional extra - even though
she was married to man of some wealth, lived in Beverly Hills, and drove to the
studio every day in a Cadillac.

She is now a professional prize fight referee.

Who says people who live out here aren't "just folks?"

All I was referring to were the scratchy shots of flying choppers. They came
from the feature. The rest of it was shot for the tv show, as far as I know.

Is Gwen the one when they have the guy that comes through and says that he
wants them to make sure he gets the "correct color of blod" and Hawkeye and
Trapper put paint on him, and the nurse comes over and says "They've got you
down as white, good job baby" or something to that effect
