An old interview with JJ Abrams by Elvis Mitchell on November 10, 2004.

Abrams does not give episode specific information, but does give an
overall feel and direction for Lost. He mentions Rod Sterling and the use
of metaphor and allegory to tell stories he wants to tell, without rubbing
the advertisers or network the wrong way.

From my observation, his direction in 2004, is still on target for 2007.

The interview was done the same day of LOST airing of "Confidence Man"

"Confidence Man" is the eighth episode of Season 1 of Lost. Shannon begins
to badly suffer from her asthma and requires her inhaler. When the
survivors ask Sawyer for it, he refuses, leading to Jack and Sayid
