I'm not a Photoshop expert by any stretch of the imagination, but when
I open the pic in PS the layer is called "Index." I don't know if
that has any significance.

Apparently it is an "indexed color image" so ignore my previous post.

There is no layer information in a gif file. I'm looking at it in PS
now and I'm not sure what 'writing' people are referring to. Are
you talking about the marks within the hair? There's something odd
there but I'm not sure it's writing.

I just opened this thing in notepad to read the binary. There might be a
pattern in the binary code or possibly be deleting certain characters, a
readable string will emerge.

Is this the missing picture of MacIntyre?

This is what I see:

Original image rotated and reversed:
http://i4.tinypic.com/10eklmg.jpg

Now highlighted:
http://i4.tinypic.com/10ekktc.jpg

Try to toggle between the two images.

and what does that accomplish? i tried a negative image, creating
a grey layer and subtracting the two, rotating it, i just don't see anything
going on here.

actually you might be on to something, not quite in the way you think though.
there are ways to hide messages within a binary picture file, but you're not going
to find it with notepad.

Here's a link about it:

Groovy, man.

Castor and Pollux (Gemini) were the gods of horse-taming. Castor in
particular was a great tamer of horses, while Pollux was a great boxer.

Look at the large black shapes formed where the shoulders join.

Now look at this screencap from "Deus ex Machina":
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimagepopup&pid=33912&fullsize=1

What is the object on the wall behind Anthony Cooper? The shape is
similar.

Nahh, that's a scythe, not a penis.

The Hole Truth:

S1E1 Boone: Maybe we should do one of those hole things. You know,
stick the pen in the throat?
S1E5 Sayid: You go after him now, he'll give you nothing. But if you
wait, a rat will always lead you to its hole.
S1E7 Locke: You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge.
It's in there right now, struggling, it's digging its way through the
thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it, take my knife, gently
widen the opening, and the moth would be free. But it would be too weak
to survive. The struggle is nature's way of strengthening it.
S1E7 Michael: Hey, we're through. We got a hole.
S1E8 David: Louisiana will invest 2/3's of the drilling costs. What is
this? A loophole?
S1E9 Hurley: It's 2 holes, for now. 3 par, and no waiting.
S1E10 Shannon: You want my information. Name: Shannon Rutherford, Age:
20, Address: Craphole Island.
S1E16 Sawyer: A hole in the mud.
S1E25 Jack: That thing was taking you down the hole and you asked me to
let you go.
S2E1 Hurley: Great idea, dude, go look into the burning death hole.
S2E1 Locke: And if Jack thinks I've lost it, I can't blame him,
really. Then again, 5 hours ago I was pulled into a hole by what
appeared to be a column of black smoke.
S2E7 Ana-Lucia: Why do you think I'm digging this hole?
S2E8 Kate: Well, why don't we play a few holes and see which one of us
is more accurate.
S2E8 Kate: 3 holes, no handicap, we play for bragging rights. What are
we waiting for?
S2E8 Jack: Half-dead with a bullet hole in his shoulder, John.
S2E16 Ana-Lucia: On the other side of the island there was this guy
with us. I was 100 percent convinced that he wasn't on the plane. So I
dug a hole and I threw him in it.
S2E20 Hurley: Dude, nice hole.

And that's without some of the interesting sentences that include the
word "whole."

about the image:

I don't know how exactly to repport this, so I'll just tell you what I've
done, and what I came up with. Open the picture in MS Paint (Why Paint?
Because its widely available program. If you've got Windows, you've got
Paint. Not everyone has PhotoShop), then click on "Image>Flip Rotate>Rotate
by angle>90 degrees". Fairly normal stuff, right? Now choose the eraser,
and hover the mouse over his hair (which should be positioned to the right
now). Somehow, even without pushing any buttons on the mouse, the eraser
erases the top 1/4 of his head, across a perfect line right above his ears.
Weird, right? Its like there's an extra layer there or something.

That's as far as I've got. It doesn't really lead to anything, but maybe
its a stepping stone for someone else with more image manipulating
experiance to build on to something better.

You're not talking about the top part of his head that got cropped off
because after you rotated the image 90 degrees, it fell outside the
boundaries of the original canvas area, are you?

We're talking about a GIF file here, there's no magic that can be done
with a GIF that could cause a program to execute odd things.
There are also no layers in a GIF. I think we're looking at a red
herring.
