The flashbacks of Eko depict a rather ruthless character. ...OK, so he
did spare his Brother from the clutches of iniquity when they were both
kids, but he didn't exactly turn his life around after that either.
..In fact, he turned into some kind of power hungry warlord. ....So was
that "drug/church money for vaccines" simply a ploy, to imply to us,
that he had some redeeming qualities? Or was it his original intention
to act the way he did to rid the country of those drug dealers? ...AAR
that was a pretty dramatic OJ he pulled on them. Didn't exactly look
like he'd never done such a thing before. ...In fact, I was even
thinking when Charlie was with him ...For Christ sake, don't get too
lippy there, Chuck.
..So, he tuned his life around, and actually credited old gold tooth
for saving it. That scene where he's holding his Brother's body asking
for forgiveness, damn near brought me to tears. Obviously, he truly did
care for his Brother, inspite of involving him with his apparent
crookedness. ...I would guess that following his being mistaken for a
priest, he actually did turn his life around. ...And of course, the
virtue of childhood was always special to him, as witnessed by his aid
to his Brother, the crash surviving children, (perhaps) the young guy
with the drug dealers, and his interest in Aaron.
So was he on the list of 9 that anna found? No. ...Does that mean he was
bad? ...Maybe. But then according to Goodwin, he and a couple of others
were going to be taken on the first night, because of their athletic
ability....IE: Threat.
...So how does that play out? Is he going to be the fly in the ointment
and interfere with another of the planted others - like the
"unparalized" Locke impersonator? I think so. Does he know the
secret that the Walt image was trying to convey to Shannon: Keep your
damn mouth shut? I think so. Further, I think we're going to see a
lot more of Eko in the weeks to come. ..Jon

This is sort of an off-shoot of the topic. Why is it that neither
Boone nor Sayid noticed the body (of the brother) in the plane but it
was easily found by Eko?
With Boone, it could have been completely hidden, I suppose. But
after the plane fell and Sayid went in it to look for a
radio/electronics, he never mentioned seeing a body. Did he only look in
the front?
Wasn't Eko always with 2 men? Well, one was killed on the tarmac
before the plane took off, the other, with Eko's help, pulled the brother
into the plane after he (the brother) was shot. Who was flying the
plane? Apparently another "priest". On the island, we have the dead
priest found by Boone and Locke and the one found last night by Eko and
Charlie. Both of whom jumped and parachuted from the plane to the island
and were both killed, seemingly almost immediately upon landing.
Just a side note, wouldn't the smoke from the plane on fire attract
"The Others"?

:-)

One of the underlying themes to Lost is the notion of good vs. evil
being not as clear cut as many of us, (especially in "western culture")
seem to think. Eko even had a quote to that effect. Remember how we
met all these people before we started to see the skeletons in their
closet. Is Kate good or bad? Is Locke good or Bad? Sayid? What
about Ana-Lucia, the "cold hearted bitch" that the tailees would
probably lost without?

Along with this is the theme of karma or the theme of redemption.
Everybody's shit (karma) is coming back to them on the island and they
are having to deal with it. There appear to be three possible
outcomes. They either deal with it and make their peace (Jin and Sun),
they die (Boone and Shannon) or they still have lots of work to do
(most everybody else).

Best quote of the episode. "You gonna hit me with your Jesus stick?"

Redemption and Karma again. Good deeds are rewarded and bad deeds are
punished.

Eko's backstory was the one I was waiting for, and it was completely
different from my expectations. Fantastic and surprising.

Are we sure they didn't? It would have been more odd to find the plane
without bodies in it.

I lost track of the logistics of it all myself...

I think the Others don't need smoke. If they want to find anybody
they'll come out and get them when they damn well please.

Boone saw it and freaked out.

The plane had crashed. It was almost a given there would be a body inside.
Why bother mentioning it?

I don't think he had to mention seeing a body or bodies. A plane crashed,
of course there are bodies in it. But that doesn't concern us now. Boone
found the heroin, Sayid found the heroin. Doesn't Charlie know Locke knows
that there's heroin inside the Marys? What's he doing letting people know
he had it to begin with? The more I'm reminded of the priest dangling from
the tree, the more I think that was gold-tooth and they pulled him down and
covered his face with that big giant leaf that are so handy.

Boone didn't get much of a chance to talk about what he found in the plane
and Sayid _did_ mention the two bodies.

The one found by Boone and Locke appeared to be the same one found by Eko
and Charlie. With the two bodies on board the plane mentioned by Sayid, that
accounts for the three occupants: Eko's brother, the pilot, and Gold Tooth.

I just loved that bit from the recap:
Locke and Eko, looking at the film; Locke mentions coincidence and Eko
says "Or fate?"--their minds meld.
Especially since now that Eko has seen what Locke saw out there in the
jungle--or rather, the thing has seen them.
