Because that's what it's called. :-)
Other terms, like "spirit gum" and "prosthetic adhesive," wouldn't have
been as easily understood by the TV audience, so the writers chose a
term we would hopefully understand as meaning that Zeke is wearing a
costume.

Of course. They brought this glue to the island at some point, along
with lots of ragged clothing and crude caps, specifically to play the
part of savages or pirates or hillbillies.

Well, they have arrived!
First, Danielle. Then, Desmond. Then, the Lostaways and Tailees. And
maybe, Henry Gale--if he's telling the truth.
Zeke and his buddies don't want these newcomers to know who and what
they are.
It could be just to intimidate the Lostaways and keep them huddled near
the beach. (Wouldn't you be more scared to run into a bunch of barefoot
savages in rags waving torches, than to run into a bunch of scientists
in white lab coats and medical gowns?)
It could also be to keep the Lostaways from wondering why The Others
keep abducting Walt and the others. If the Lostaways think they're
savages, they will just dismiss those kidnappings as savage acts.
Whereas if the Lostaways realize they're scientists, they will start to
wonder what kinds of experiments they're doing. And like I said, The
Others won't seem as intimidating once the Lostaways learn that they're
research scientists rather than howling savages.
If we thought Ethan Rom was just a homicidal maniac, it keeps us from
trying to figure out any rational motive for him. If we realize he's a
PHYSICIAN, then we start to wonder about his true motive!

So far, everything you have said, I thought was obvious.
