For the first 17 or 18 seasons of The Mothership and in SVU, ordinary
citizens unrelated to the crime of the day would be going about their
business and usually happening upon the crime scene by chance and then
the detectives show up to survey the scene with the forensics
personnel or the medical examiner and then one of the detectives would
offer a wisecrack to sum up what they seen. "The Slice of Life"
approach.
For CI and the Mothership in recent seasons, the events leading up to
the crime from the victim's point of view is detailed before an
ordinary citizen appears after the dirty deed is done to alert the
authorities. The detectives on the Mothership would appear after the
crime is committed and crack wise before the fade out. The Major Case
CI detectives don't usually show up until after the show's intro and
when the guest star credits roll. "The Victim's Final Moments". I
prefer this one a bit more. A little more time to flesh out the
victim's personality in the final hours.
Not sure about Criminal Stupid (my old Web Tv name for the show,
LoL). I haven't watched since Chris Noth left, but I think I will
pick up again this spring. Just have to find it on USA now.
