Crow's Theatre
in association with the du Maurier Ltd. World Stage
Present the 15th Anniversary production of Jim Milan's
DALI
Fifteen years after its world premiere, the surrealist spectacle DALI
remains as controversial and intriguing as the artist himself does.
Written and directed by Crow's Theatre Artistic Director Jim Millan, the
award-winning DALI is a landscape of the past century as seen through the
eyes and paintbrush of the outrageous and intellectual artist.
DALI is an evening with Salvador Dali, the surrealist master painter,
showman and pop star. Performed by the man himself, Dali stages his own
biography as viewed through the fun house mirrors of his mind!
First presented in 1985 starring Guillermo Verdecchia as Salvador Dali and
remounted in 1986 starring Tom McCamus, this anniversary production of DALI
will feature a young and exciting cast including Normand Bissonnette,
Richard Clarkin (as Dali), Fiona Highet, Conor Green, Genevieve Langlois
and Selina Martin.
The Dora-Award winning DALI cemented Crow's Theatre's position in Toronto's
innovative and daring theatrical movement, and since then Crow's has gone
on to produce such important and influential shows as Serpent Kills by Jim
Millan and Blake Brooker, Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of
Love by Brad Fraser, and High Life by Lee MacDougall (which premiered at
the World Stage Festival in 1996). Once again, Jim Millan has been invited
to present a work at the prestigious World Stage Festival.
DALI is a biographical journey with the painter through the world as it
looked to him: the Miss Surrealism beauty contest winner, the waiter who
collapses and weeps when the asparagus bouquet is rejected, and the melting
alarm clock. A part of the surrealist movement in the 30's, Salvador Dali's
artistic style grew into the disturbing blend of precise realism and
dreamlike fantasy that became his hallmark. Against desolate backgrounds
he juxtaposed incongruous, unrelated and often bizarre objects. The
outrageous script - a dizzying succession of moving canvasses - is an
intellectual exercise exploring the transformation of a hard reality world
to the softer erotic surreal world of Dali!
"It is outrageous and deadpan throughout, Surrealism will never be the same
again!" The Globe and Mail
"Celebrate the return of Dali."
