Bunheads
Premieres Monday Jun 11, ABC Family

If you thought Stars Hollow was quirky and quaint, wait till you check out
Paradise. The sleepy California beach town - so small-potatoes it doesn't
even have a movie theater - is the setting for 'Bunheads,' a new comedy from
'Gilmore Girls' creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster plays fading Los Vegas showgirl Michelle
Simms, who marries her persistent suitor on a drunken whim and goes home
with him to Paradise, only to discover he lives with his battle-ax mother
('Gilmore's' Kelly Bishop).

Mom runs a dance academy for wannabe ballerinas - aka 'bunheads' - and
before long Michelle bonds with the young girls out of both love and
desperation.

Unlike most ABC Family fare, 'Bunheads' has adult appeal. "This is a show
about lost dreams and second chances," says Sherman-Palladino. "It's for
anybody who has ever suddenly looked at their life and said, 'Holy shit! How
did I get here!' "

Not that unusual. The city I liive in (a large east coast city now
has no moive theater. (It hsd two, both are now hisotry. One was a
one screen second run theater, the other was a multi plex. The multi
plex got leveled for a highway that went through, the second run
theater is still there but needs major repairs before it opens again
(if it ever does.)

There is a megaplex with 12 screens in the next town.

I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if this sleepy California beach
town is supposed to be in Southern California or Northern California,
but what I've seen of the previews makes it feel like Bodega Bay in
the Marin-Sonoma area, just north of the Bay Area. Coastal California
gets even more rural the further north you get. Plus, there are some
rural-ish coastal areas between Gilroy/Santa Cruz and Ventura County,
so I don't know where that critic was coming from other than Planet
Snobbery (or the Gilmore Mansion, hee).
