New Show Report Card: ‘Don’t Trust The B(itch) In Apartment 23′

I have some mixed emotions about ABC’s new comedy ‘Don’t Trust the B(itch)
In Apartment 23.’ On the one hand, I appreciate a major network taking a
flyer on a lead female character who isn’t exactly the most savory of human
beings, but I worry the series as it progresses will attempt to soften
Krysten Ritter’s deliciously evil Chloe until she is more reminiscent of ‘2
Broke Girls’’ Max, a character with virtually no bite anymore. Having said
that, maybe they won’t and my fears will be all for naught.
‘Don’t Trust the B(itch) In Apartment 23’ is a straight forward enough
premise – a naive girl (Dreama Walker) from Indiana moves to New York and
moves in with a mean person. There you have it. Let’s grade it.
Strength of Episode – B+: Though the script calls for Chloe to help her new
roommate out, she does it in the most despicable way possible, so I’m okay
with it. The jokes are solid and the ensemble cast is endlessly watchable.
In short, this is entertaining group to spend 22 minutes with and Krysten
Ritter has deserved her own show for years now, so let’s all celebrate it
for the time being.
Grade the Ensemble – A-: Besides Ritter and Walker who are excellent, there’s
a comedian named Eric Andre who plays Walker’s new coffee shop boss. Andre
has been up and coming for a while and the dude is just plain funny. He’s
relatively hidden in the pilot, but I’m hoping he gets a lot more screen
time over the course of the season. Also on board is Liza Lapira who was the
absolute best thing on her short lived Fox sitcom ‘Traffic Light’ a few
years ago
Potential For the Series As A Whole: As of right now there is no reason for
them not to be pretty high. As long as my aforementioned fear of them
softening the character does not come true, ‘Don’t Trust the B(itch)’ has
the potential to be one of the funnier sitcoms running.
Overall Grade: Let’s say, for right now a B+
