Note: this is on a lot less screens than the big ones.
The studios like to earn 85% of gross the first weekend.

They don't list cost for Post Grad but it is probably in the
$100 million neighborhood at least.

Can you say bomb at the box office?

The studio probably wanted at least $125 million the first week
(like that was going to happen....mabye it would have if it
had some Tranformers in it or maybe a boy wizard or maybe some
aliens.)

1. a 45% drop isn't huge for second week. It's not great either, it's
middle-of-the-pack

2. The number of screens isn't significantly different from the first
week. That's also normal, there is typically a two-week commitment by the
theatres. The big drop in theatres will be the third week (Post-Grad
dropped to 673 theatres on Friday).

3. No way on God's green earth is Post-Grad's budget in six-figures. It's
a character comedy, with no special effects, no big name high price tag
actor (Bledel was the one with her name over the title) and no major
location shooting, and was made by Fox's 'indie' banner Fox Searchlight
(now defunct). It's budget is $25M or less. Might even be as low as $10M

>Can you say bomb at the box office?

Yes, and Post-Grad certainly qualifies.

Post-Grad was an orphan. The production house that made it was closed by
Fox. Fox took over the release, and it did not gve it huge promotional
money. The promotional campaign was on the cheap, and while really quite
innovative, ultimaately wasn't successful (it could well be that no
promotional campaign would have been successful in the long run). The only
cast member to hit the late night talk shows was Bledel, and she was only
on Craig Ferguson (those sort of promotional appearances are set up by the
studios, Fox didn't set any up, apparantly).

It wasn't so much released, as it escaped.

I'll put it this way, I'm probably the biggest Bledel fan here (I'm sort of
the anti-Rob), and nothing abuot the ads or trailers enticed me to watch
the film.

But a $5,300,000 gross the first week is a huge dissappointment.
The studios like to take in 85% of the gross the first week,
a huge drop off occurs after the first week.

The number of screens is significantly less than the other movies out
now. People can't go and see it if it isn't playing wide at
the number of theaters a big film like Harry Potter was playing at.

It's also not in the $675.000 neighborhood like Blair Witch. You add
up all the actors, production crew, and other expenses and
it will be alot more than the $5,300,000 it took in in the first week.

As is the case all too often the sudios have these films
and have no clue how to sell them.

Might Post Grad have done better at the box office in May or September
or November? After all August is when the summer dregs are released.

This just in: Post Grad brings in a whopping $300,000 this past
weekend.

I can hear it now on Conan: "We know where Bin Laden was this
weekend........he was hiding out in a theater showing Post Grad."

The number of screens in in the 600+ neighborhood.
