* THE PRICE IS RIGHT: THE PRICING GAMES FROM A TO (ALMOST) Z *
* Number 14 in a series -- collect all 75! *
*************************************************************************
* Game Name: CLIFF HANGERS *
* When Played: Late 1970's-present *
* Played for: Bonus Package *
* Staging: Bonus package behind door #3, game board center stage *
* Props: Counter for grocery items, display unit with 0-9 digit *
* buttons operated by model *
* Model used: Holly Hallstrom *
* Gameplay: Five grocery items are shown. Player estimates the price *
* of each, and the model taps the price into an adding machine- *
* type display. After the five have been guessed the player's *
* total is shown. Then the actual prices are shown on stylized *
* paper bag displays which rise behind each item. If the player's *
* total is within 50 cents above or below the actual total, they *
* win the bonus prize. *

* THE PRICE IS RIGHT: THE PRICING GAMES FROM A TO (ALMOST) Z *
* Number 15 in a series -- collect all 75! *
*************************************************************************
* Game Name: CLIFF HANGERS *
* When Played: 1976-present *
* Played for: Bonus Package, three small merchandise prizes *
* Staging: Bonus package behind door #3, game board center stage *
* Props: Game board which resembles a mountain climbed by a Swiss- *
* hatted climber with pickaxe, ending in a sharp *
* downward cliff, three prize podiums *
* Models used: Anitra Ford, Dian Parkinson, Holly Hallstrom, Lisa *
* Stahl *
* Gameplay: Three small merchandise prizes are presented, which the *
* stage contestant bids on one at a time. If the price is correct *
* the mountain climber stays put. If not, the mountain climber *
* begins to climb the mountain, taking one step for every dollar *
* the player has missed the price of the small item. The mountain *
* has 25 steps (dollars) marked off, and the climber can move *
* up to 25 steps safely before he takes his 26th step and falls *
* off the cliff. If the stage contestant misses the three prices *
* by less than $25, they win the prize package. (Hint on play: *
* The three small prizes are always presented in ascending price *
* order, and no small prize ever exceeds $50 in price.) *
* Notes: One of the first games added to "TPiR" when it expanded to *
* an hour. The first to also use a moving token to show the game *
* progress. Fritz Stammberger had been missing in Pakistan for *
* about a month when, in December 1975, the game was added to *
* TPIR. Janice Pennington recounts the debut (from her book *
* "Husband, Lover, Spy"): *
* "Someone had heard the story of Fritz' disappearance and *
* found it amusing, interesting, a good idea for a game. I *
* watched the screen fill with the words 'Cliff Hangers'. It had *
* to do with climbing...the producer tried to convince me that *
* the game had nothing to do with Fritz, that they hadn't meant *
* to be insensitive, but the game went on. I went to my dressing *
* room. I couldn't watch." *
* Remember when one poor player had to bid on some costume *
* jewelry for starters, and bid $150? *
* The original music accompanying the climber was from "Snow *
* White and the Seven Dwarfs", when the dwarfs were working in *
* the mine. A more generic yodeling song replaced it within a *
* year of its debut. *
* On TNPIR, Doug Davidson dubbed the climber Hans Gudegast, which *
* was the birth name of "Young and the Restless" costar Eric *
* Braeden. *
* Next: Clock Game *
