Saw the Nov 23 issue of "Daily Variety" at a library. It reported that
Stone-Stanley is developing a game show based on UNO, the card game owned by
Mattel, from which they bought the licensing rights.

How about a game-show anthology based on "Hoyle's Rule Book of Card

Hmmm...it looks like it is a possibility...I never thought Scattergories

Actually, that would be interesting to see how that would be adapted to TV.
There were some board games that were never meant to be game-shows and look
how they turned out. Examples: Scrabble... if anyone has played the
original game, it was completely different from the show. in fact, it
spawned a new version of the game. And Monopoly. ABC did a great job with
that adaptation (it was one of those hey-if-you-just-gave-it-a-chance
shows...)

But then again, they DID say Stone Stanley was making UNO, and, like any
respectable person in this group, I believe that they lost all credibility
after the cancellation of "(Fox's) Funhouse", and only gained a smidgeon of
it back with "Legends of the Hidden Temple."

On that related note... would anyone like to see a game show of Outburst?

...Hangman became Wheel of Fortune, Tic-Tac-Toe became Tic-Tac-Dough and
Hollywood Squares, and so on and so forth. I'm surprised that this UNO
proposal hasn't received higher critical acclaim from the newsgroup;
granted, Stone-Stanley haven't got the best track record, but as
premises for a game show go, there have been worse. Granted, Scrabble
and Yahtzee represent the two extremes (arguable?) of how well and how
badly the translation from board game to game show can go. Is there any
reason why S-S couldn't pull it out of the bag and create another show
that's as good as Scrabble? Well, apart from them being Stone-Stanley?
(Another way of looking at it: is it possible for Stone-Stanley to
produce UNO so badly that it gets in their personal list of three worst
shows ever?)

I may be alone, but I think this is something to look forward to, if it
happens. Game shows involving card games (and you know the examples I'm
thinking of as well as I do) have always been pretty good, haven't they?

Have a good week!

This is the case with the version you are familiar with.

However there was an adaption in the mid-80s in the UK for Channel 4
which was a much more 'faithful' treatment.

Uno is loads of fun to play, but it's not very interesting for spectators. The
most similar card games I can think of are poker and bridge -- all three hide
the cards held in individual hands until they're played. Card Sharks and
Gambit were played so that the players saw their cards for the first time when
everyone else did.

I'm not certain how this obstacle can be overcome. Four players, say, with the
cards in their hand in a display at the front of their podiums, so that the
home audience can see but the opposing players cannot?

I hate to be a pessismist (because I've railed against pessimism before), but
at first glance I can't see Uno working as a television game unless it's
totally overhauled, even more so than Scrabble -- regardless of whether it's
Stone-Stanley, Merv Griffin, King World, or anyone else packaging the game. If
Stone-Stanley can pull it off, more power to them, but it's a long row to hoe.

Card Shark, Beej, was from the mind of someone who knew how
to put together a game show: Chester Feldman.
Unfortunately, S/S is to game shows what the Grinch is to

I still prefer "The Hollywood Cubes" which was a rather elaborate skit on
the show "Fridays". There were something like 54 celebrities along the faces
of the cube, and when the contestant got to turn the cube, many of them
tumbled out of the set and new celebs came into view. Very funny!

Now that reminds me of the Tiger game "Lights Out." I swear it could go to

Don't laugh: During the 70s a friend and I used to pretend to be a game show
host and contestant. We created various game shows, including HOT DICE,
CELEBRITY DARTS, and SUPER ROULETTE. In one game, we actually adapted a
pre-existing board game called LOTTERY, somewhat similar to bingo, into
something compatible with the traditional game show format.

Well, maybe on the Playboy Channel...

By the way: When is that game coming to CD-ROM?

I've been trying to think about just HOW they will make uno into a "game show
format". Much like Scrabble and Monopoly, I think its going to be just the
"look" of the game, with rules made up to be a game show.

I think it could be made into some type of Trivia game, where everyone gets
dealt a hand of UNO cards, and to be able to play a card, you need to buzz in
and answer a trivia question, or maybe some type of "survey" question if it
wants to be "dumbed" down.

Any other ideas?
Don't go there........

Or have 3 players play until the person who knocks out more lights Out or a
player clears the board
