It's not just that he makes General Custer look competent, but that he
never seems to get come-uppance for his incompetence & irresponsibility.

I like Zapp, especially the way he says 'velour'....
You're approaching 50 years old, and you *hate* a cartoon character?
Perhaps try thcreaming and thcreaming 'till you're thick.
That sometimes works for petulant young girls.

I have never seen an episode of "Futurama".
Am I missing anything? Is it an updated version of "The Jetsons"?
Think 'The Simpsons in Space'.
Ok, that's a bit of a generalisation, but you get the picture.

That's helpful and I do get the picture. Thanks.
"The Jetsons" was just "The Flintstones", not in space exactly, but in the
space age.
Of course, "The Flinstones" was just the typical late fifties American
suburban sit-com family depicted as living in the stone age.
Its one of those shows that ages better then second time you watch it. A lot
of good writing and jokes are often overlooked.
I think he's a good character that adds a lot, when used with proper
restraint.
The part was originally written for Phil Hartman, and it's tragic that he
couldn't do it. The best Brannigan episodes are the ones where the character
is played as Hartman would have done it.

That's kind of the joke, eh?

I've said no such thing!

Whereas ad hominem attacks are so mature?

That's one of Futurama's strongest point--the fact that the episodes
can be watched more than once. Another is that so much material gets
packed into a single episode. In fact many of the episodes in season 6
could easily have been whole movies, as was done in season 5.

I'd say the lack of comeuppance is an integral part of the design. The
incompetent and irresponsible never receive their just punishment in real
life either. Just look at me, still allowed to walk the streets freely in
spite of everything.
It's the fact that everyone in the 31st Century (except Leela and Kif)
remains blind to Zapp's manifest awfulness that makes Futurama the gritty
cinema verite documentary we know and love.

Well, he was a crucial component of my favorite non-joke joke. In
"Amazon Women in the Mood," he's the only one chained FACING the wall!
Although he does push my stupidity tolerance in "A Taste of Freedom"
when he gives the codes to crewman "Hugh Man" who has oven mitts on,
no less!
I don't mind his lack of receiving comeuppance as much as I mind that
Kif usually shoulders the blame for Zapp's stupidity.
DSF - Futurama fan since 2999.

Grin.
Mind you, those defence codes seem to be useless anyway, given how often
the Omicronians fly in to invade...
