But he's a superb director and this is where I'd steer him if it were

No great surprise here. I think we all agreed this one had the stench
of death on it at the first ep. I was not able to see subsequent ep.
but from what was said here, it did not sound to me as though there
were any improvements.
I agree he has shown his chops for directing; why not focus his
efforts there? If he really misses acting--and I'm not arguing he
isn't a supremely talented actor--he could follow the path of his
former co-star John Mahoney and do live theater. He has tremendous
stage presence, and like JM, he can "afford" to do something for
"love" if not for money.
