When I was younger, I did stand-up comedy for about ten years. And there
was a point in my career when I moved to L.A. and started auditioning
for TV shows. In theory, I shouldn't had any problems. I was personable,
quick-witted and people tended to instantly like me. I was very
successful on stage, during interviews, even on the radio. They loved me
in auditions. but once the camera was on me, I just didn't 'click.' It
made no sense, there didn't seem to be any logical problem I could work
on to improve things. The camera just didn't love me, and that's all she
wrote.

Given my experiences, I have a lot of sympathy for anyone participating
in "The Next Food Network Star." It's not easy to find someone who can
cook and also can shine on camera. So much of the success in front of
the camera can't be defined. It just either works or it doesn't.

And that's certainly the problem The Food Network has faced in the first
three seasons of this show. Season two winner Guy Fieri has become a
true "star" of the network. But both the season one and season three
winners never really connected with the audience.

That challenge is ultimately what separates this show from other food
competition shows. These contestants aren't hoping to win some money and
maybe a cooking job somewhere. In theory, the winner could become a
full-blown TV star. And that requires much more than solid cooking
skills.

Season four begins with a couple of changes, including bringing in Bobby
Flay as the host. Although in at least the first episode, you barely see
the guy.

Episode one quickly introduces the contestants, then throws them into
their first challenge. Alton Brown comes out, and explains that each
contestant is now expected to explain their cooking philosophy. He
offers them some props (if they need them), and then sticks them one by
one in front of the camera for a quick sentence or two of explanation.

Brown turns out to be a good choice for this segment, since he has a
good sense of what works and what doesn't. He asks them questions
afterwards, offers suggestions and gives them things to consider in the
future.

A couple of contestants stand out in this challenge, and not for good
reasons. Cory Kahaney should be an early favorite. She's a stand-up
comedienne and playwright who has extensive TV experience. She also a
strong background in cuisine. But when it comes time for her to give her
spiel, she collapses into an awkward, nervous mess.

The other memorable explanation comes from Dallas, Texas chef Liza
Garza. She gives an almost impossible to follow explanation of her
cooking style. Brown admits he has no idea what she's talking about, and
when he presses her for details, she gives him a look that suggests she
thinks he's the dumbest man on earth.

Challenge two breaks up the contestants into groups of two. Each team is
expected to crank out three dishes in thirty minutes. One dish that
illustrates each person's cooking style, and a third dish that serves as
the melding of both talents onto single plate.

The challenge is even tougher, since the teams will be expected to
deliver and explain their dishes to a group of Food Network stars.
Including Bobby Flay, Sandra Lee, The Neelys, Giada and Iron Chef
Morimoto.

I won't give away much of what happens, other than to say that both
Kahane and Garza don't have much better luck in this challenge. But it
does begin to give you a sense of who might have the talent to be in the
finals.

I've been a fan of "The Next Food Network Star" since the beginning.
It's still the best cooking competition on television. And who knows. We
might even see another star being born this season.

It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which
the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn
our military victory in Iraq into a second Vietnam quagmire. Too bad
for them, it's failing.

That is the hardest part, as two of the judges cannot cook their way out of a
bowl of ice cream, one does not understand swift preparation and Morimoto
lives in a different universe. I have no idea who The Neelys are, but I can guess.

The Neelys are an African-American couple who cook "home style" food
and have lots of obnoxious repartee between them in the process. I
don't know who pitched them to the network, and what Tom was thinking
when he signed them on, but they are just taking up broadcast time, in
my opinion. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given the state of the
current program lineup. I agree with your assessment of the other
"guest stars" at the table.

I think Top Chef is better than this competition, for various
reasons.

This group, this time, seems to be made up of people who have solid
cooking chops, at least. I had thought maybe Nipa would have
something for the network, but she is so unrealistically over-
confident, she came across as obnoxious to the max. Pardon me -
"spice queen?" And you can't make a popular Indian potato dish with
curry where the guests can taste the curry in it? What's wrong with
this picture?

I'll be interested in watching the next few episodes to see how they
play out - I like the tall dude with the glasses; Liza's partner,
whatever his name was (is it Liza or Lisa?), and the slim, dark-haired
guy who reminded me a lot of one of the contestants last year...the
judges remarked that people enjoyed his style and his humor.

I don't watch the network on a regular basis, but every time I see Guy
Fieri, he's in some restaurant trying their food. Does he ever COOK?

Truly, I don't understand his appeal.

Oh, and last time I saw Guy's cooking show, he made up a word:

So far, I think this is a better batch of contestants than last
year's. In episode 2, the Indian woman almost put herself out of
contention by throwing a "I can't take this anymore" snit, but then
came back and apologized. Reminded me a little of last year, where
the "Gourmet Next Door" was seemingly out of contention, only to be
reinstated and finally win it.

She's really bounced back from the first week.

Her marketing experience is starting to pay off.

So, what do you think?

Actually the allegations are that Irving's show itself is fake. Every
blog and column I have read from particpants not to mention the few
vewings lends largely to the notion that the missions are as impossible
as the drama on MTV's The Hills is real. Even FN's own litle behind the
scenes bit they had online when the show first started showed how
incredibly edited the show is; the Philadelphia Eagles tailgating
episode really illustrated to me just how contrived and fake the
adherence to most of the constraints is. Host and show matched
perfectly. It is scripted reality for the foodie set. And there is
certainly nothing wrong with that if it entertains people. But there is
a lot of smoke and mirrors in how the show presents itself and how the
show actually operates.

And that is one of the problems I have with this show. It takes the
premise of the FN show and makes the contestants jump through hoops as
if they were on that show. But on that show without the hidden
production ease that is built in. Iron Chef challenge? Yeah pretend that
the chefs don't have time prior to filming to set up an array of recipes
for the potential secret ingredient. Dinner Impossible? Forget that PAs
trot out days in advance to make sure what is on hand. And make sure it
is on hand (Philly tailgating for instance), if it isn't already. 30
minute meals? Never mind that Ray hasn't done a menu for the show since
day one, let alone a single amount of prep and that the clock stops
several times no matter how much FN denies it (either stop with that
myth or stop with the VIP tours of the sets during filming; that or make
sure those touring VIPS aren't gleefully blogging their visits and all
the dirt they see). Since the "Fieti" farce it seems that the main
thrust of the show is more to bolster the existing crop of shows. Much
like those ancient specials the networks used to have on friday nights
to give an overview of all the new cartoons they ran on saturday
mornings.

I don't get it. Why such a different tone? Have they confused 'serious'

And who does the casting because this show is like a parody of itself.
It is to Top Chef as Flavor of Love is to The Bachelor.
I can't see any of these people having a show, maybe even a viable
career.

And to be frank I am frightened that they seem less able to carry a show
than Guy.

And a little OT: Guy needs to get a different show, he is bloating to
disastrous proportions. He needs like a low fat, low carb, vegetable
oriented assignment for a season or two. I fear the cameras will be
rolling when his arteries finally close completely.

It is hard to keep up with the liars on FN. Both Irving AND the Food
Network Star were shown to be liars.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the trainwreck new show hosted by
Anne Burrel. Heard about it so I taped an episode. She waves her hands
around so much I thought she was doing the show in sign language. Her
language and personal stories show that she was put through the FN
bootcamp for ruining good chefs. What a waste. FN has no idea what makes
a good show. They need to be abused of the notion (common in business)
that anyone with training can do the job. I'd like to see someone get on
the Next Star show whose "concept" is to parody the typical FN show.

I would like to see a show called "The Wednesday Food Section". A show
based on the recipes that appear in a newspaper that wednesday. Could
track the NYT, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe and various
regional papers. Maybe I should I apply to be on FN.

Note that when they went to Pixar, they actually did send people to
Costco (IIRC) to shop. They did NOT have the ingredients on hand.

I don't think Guy has changed much since his tryout days. I like
watching him just because he has such a good time.

As to why the judges are cranky - they mistakenly equate their judging
duties with being negative. But for cranky critics, nobody beats
Andrew Knowlton (food writer) who shows up on Iron Chef America from
time to time, and also on Top Chef. He never likes anything.

Well, Noemi likes to criticize in broad strokes. Many of the
episodes, Robert and his crew have gone shopping - sometimes (as on
the island thing) an hour away from the cook site.

I'm sure it's edited to make it look "possible" - I remember one
episode where he didn't get the job done, though.

I don't know Anne B., whoever she is - but FN has been advertising
itself for over a year as "way more than cooking." People just have
to quit watching, or realize that it's entertainment, and it won't
suit everyone.

As to Iron Chef America, the chefs are given, I believe, two different
possible secret ingredients for the event beforehand, so they can
prepare ideas and techniques for either one. That's why it seems that
all their ingredients are on hand, etc. If Noemi had ever watched the
"behind the scenes" show about ICA, she'd know that.

Anyway, back to the show.

I'm still finding Lisa fascinating. Even though she is not the kind
of person I normally relate to.

But, she really impresses me as very smart and a self-made women.

I fear Aaron will win, and find him tiresome and uninteresting.

I really thought Shane would make it to the top two. His food seemed
really tasty, and his back story about losing weight added a nice
dimension.

I had a different take. Both Aaron and Adam will get booted. They don't
always bring their 'A' game.

Kelsey will get booted for being too perky, young and not authoritative
enough (or so they'll say).

I have this sick feeling the winner (already chosen, by the way) is Lisa.
She has a lot of the snob factor that seems to appeal to the network brass.
I doubt if I'll watch her show.

Same here. She's coming across like a Snadra Lee with a degree -
dangerous on SO many levels. And I really dislike
that squinting thing she does. How many epis did the last "star"
actually make? I think I saw 3, and I haven't seen her since.
This channel is tanking quicker than the Antarctic.

I don't know which one you're talking about, but if you mean Amy Finley
["The Gourmet Next Door"], I saw a news item about that a few weeks back:
they shot one season of shows and Food Network was planning to shoot the
next seasons's-worth and *SHE* decided she didn't like hassles/stress/etc
of doing the show and she said "no thanks" and her husband have moved to
France (!),

Personally I think she was chosen as the winner from day one and
they've manipulated the show to make folks come around to Lisa and
support her.

Good, I'll be happy.

I really didn't like her at first. But I am a real fan of self made
people that do something with their life.

I couldn't sit through five minutes of her show. She's just not a
compelling person to watch or listen to; and she never seemed
particularly comfortable in front of the camera.

I have a feeling Lisa won't get it. She is totally unwatchable on the
TeeVee. Lisa needs a huge dose of Thorazine to calm her down. I
watched tonight, and she looked like a monkey on crank. The snobs have
the Fine Living Channel and The Travel Channel. The FN has the snark
factor with Flay. Lisa is too "intense" for the Slop hoards. Who would
she appeal to that still watches FN for cooking?

The FN got burned with another unwatchable female, Finley, I'm sure
they don't want to waste anymore veneer/makeover money.

Alan or Aaron? Coin flip. Hey FN call it a tie and have the two on a
show together! Let's take this absurdity to the max. Couldn't be any
worse than dear Amy's show. Mwahahahah.

Aaron is such a wimp. I really don't want to hear about his Son
running away, or how he can't cook ant talk at the same time.

Alan might be funny at times, but every office has someone funnier.

I should probably stop watching before I get too disapointed.

Cheers

One week his son is running away - the next he's remembering cooking
with his kids. Something is amiss. Truth will probably come out like
last year and whats her name will be brought back for the finale.

The Food Network needs to pay attention to when they run commercials
for this show. The last two weeks, I watched a "re-broadcast" version
instead of the initial episode. Both times, they showed a commercial
for the upcoming show, featuring the contestants left. By watching
who they show in the commercial, I can obviously figure who got the
boot during the last show (which I have been watching for the last 45
minutes). Thanks for not making me watch the last 15 minutes of the
show. :-(

I'm just the opposite. I'd be up for giving a Lisa or an Aaron show a
chance. They both appear to be good cooks -- and that's what I'm in
it for. I also like Lisa's intensity.

Alan's a clown -- and his antics aren't even funny! They're
embarrassing and childish. Plus he's a novice at cooking. Isn't
there already enough of that on the FN?

The problem with this show, and with Top Chef, is that by eliminating
someone after each round, they knock out the people who take the big
swings. They hit a home run or two, then strike out once and they're
gone. Meanwhile the ones who plod along consistently doing just well
enough not to be chopped end up in the finals. Creating an outstanding,
winning dish counts for nothing. That is the recipe for mediocrity.
Consistent mediocrity, granted, but not excellence.

Besides, if their job is hosting a show where they cook a dish, aren't
they going to have time to prepare for the show, like by testing their
recipes before they demonstrate them on the air. They won't have a
disaster on their show like they might in the single-elimination
contest.

None of the have it together. Not like the food-network stars in the
past. The show is going down hill...fast.

And what happened to shows like, "Its' time to grill" and "Cookin' in
Brooklyn"
on the Discovery Home Channel. Let us not forget "Chef at Home" all
truely great cooing shows in their own way.
We need to bring them back.
