Our newpaper published a bunch of 9-11 poems the other day and I found this one
to be rather disturbing but very well done.

But Still..Life

We've seen the still-life-like photos--
The tea services, appointment books,
Fruit baskets artfully arranged
On tables and desks as though by Cezanne,
But without his colors, painted gray instead,
The color of the 6,000 who were
Cremated in those two tall furnaces
But then escaped the terror
By falling, floating softly
Over the City, gently
Settling on stoops, silently
Seeping through cracks
To enter empty rooms
And create the still lifes.

Reluctant to leave the neighborhood,
They filled fissures and crannies
Where they will remain as permanent
Fixtures of the cityscape just as they filled
Our memories where they still live.

Rather chilling, isn't it?
