I had to go to the mall the other day (a place I try to avoid like the plague)
and couldn't help but notice how many teens were trying so hard to look like
the Osborne kids. Please don't tell me those two are actually role models!
EEEEKKK! If I start seeing women looking like Anna Nichole Smith there next
time, I won't know what to think. :o)

IMNSHO, there are three shows on TV that should be summarily wrapped in
yesterday's newspaper and tossed in the incinerator.
1. The Osbornes
2. The Anna Nicole Smith Show
3. The Howard Stern Show
You could probably throw the Jerry Springer Show in with them but I'm convinced
that show is scripted anyway.

Donahue anymore is like the Springer show.

Osborne's is a very popular show. Not many people actually have seen how rich
people really live. Of course, movies and such. But this show is "real life!"

The kids are brats, no argument there. But they seem to love their parents very
much and have close relationships. Sharon and Ozzie have a very loving
relationship. They genuinely love each other and it's not a soap opera. Every
time he is in a jam he cries SHARRROOON!

How many people felt bad for Ozzie when he was crying because his wife has
colon cancer, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and her. They are
authentic people in my book, no matter how dysfunctional.

The point I am trying to make is this show embodies real life although they are
rich. She has colon cancer for god's sake! Their kids are brats; probably a lot
of parents on this NG have brats. God only knows how those kids are going to
turn out, probably drug addicts. But they have fun and they love each other
plus they are truly happy. With all the cursing and childish crap on the show
there is good messages overall.

One last thing is "real TV." Real life TV is not always real life TV, only what
the camera shows, remember that. God only knows how they REALLY act when the
spot light is off.

I'm with you. I absolutely can't stand those sleazy talk shows like Ricki
Lake, Maury Povich, Jenny Jones, etc. I was flipping channels the other day
and Springer was on and two HUGE fat women were fighting over some toothless
loser. Here's my question: why were they both standing there in their bra
and panties?

As for Anna Nicole...OMG(oodness) is all I can say! I refuse to watch
Osbournes or anything else on MTV. It's all trash.

I am not kidding. You must not watch the show. I am not a big fan but sometimes
they have like 5 or 6 hours worth on week ends and I tune in sometimes for a
few episodes.

Ozzie and Sharon love each other and their kids. It's a bad show because the
kids curse? Ease drop like they do on DOOL on your kid's conversation and see
what they are talking about.

But anyhow, back to the message from the show. It's an over all good message.
They are rich but they do face adversity too, colon cancer, alcoholism, basic
problems that everyone has to face. But they care for each other. For as
dysfunctional as it is, those people are truly happy. Like pigs in shit if you
will. I don't agree with the drinking and drugging that Sharon and Ozzie allow
their kids to do, but I'm not their parents. Plus, Ozzie would be a hypocrite
if he said anything to them lol. The kids are rich and spoiled and I am sure
they don't act any different then our President's children (or anyone who has
money and stature).

I understand Bonbon's point completely about generations are getting worse with
modernity. It's true, read Flannery O'Connors A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND from
years and years ago. She said it back then that children are getting worse.
This is big in literature, the question, is getting better (progressivism,
modernity, technology) really getting better or making society worse?

My argument that as BAD as they are they also great authentic people (Ivan
Ilych before he died) (Sharon and Ozzie). I thought the same way as most people
who hate the show until I watched it. My mother pointed out how much Ozzie
cares for Sharon and from then I noticed how they all care for each other. To
reiterate, it was moving watching OZZIE, the prince of darkness, cry on nation
TV scared to death because of his wife's colon cancer. Which brings up another
point, they are human too.

While they do have money and fame they have something a lot of what most
families do not have today, Love!

I can guarantee my child doesn't talk like that. He's only 7! The thing is,
he doesn't here it from his parents. And, gee, here's a unique concept, we
actually talk to him about right and wrong... and filthy language is wrong.

I have my own theory about that, and I'm sure I'll get a lot of heated
responses. But What the heck...here goes. I believe that the morals and
ethics of children has declined and the adolescent crime rate has gone up
because too many families have both parents working full-time outside the
home. Call me old fashioned, but I didn't have a child so that a day care
center could raise them. I also wouldn't want my pre-teen or teenager coming
home from school and being unsupervised for several hours.

I don't doubt that they love each other. I just don't understand why society
chooses to celebrate them so much. I have a lot of love in my family, but I
don't choose to tell my husband or child, "You know, sweetie, I really
fu***g love you."

I don't know how old some of you are, but as far as the Osbourne
children's style of dressing, that style has been around since punk
invaded in the seventies. Hell when I was a freshman I used to wear
neckties and clothing with safety pins and this was over thirteen years
ago.

And as far as the profanity, I've known quite a few families who allowed
their children to curse and it was no problem. Wasn't shocking then and
it really isn't shocking now.

Come on, get out of the suburban glass bubble and see what's really
going on.

and drinks too much.

I agree that children need to be around their parents more. I agree that the
ideal would be to have one parent available to them during the day. But, that
is not possible for all families and I would not want to tell someone that they
couldn't have children because they couldn't afford to stay home with them. I
think the world has changed more than mommies not being able/wanting to stay
home. I think the whole sense of community has evaporated and children don't
have the extended sense of family and belonging that they use to. Children are
not playing outside as much (for safety reasons) and they are given terrible
programs to watch and violent games to play for fun. Parents need to instill
values whether or not they are home all of the time.

That's what I said. "Past *or* present." What kind of parent *wouldn't* warn

in the throws of addiction? Who would want their own child to go thru that?

The suburban glass bubble? And what's wrong with the suburbs? I choose to
raise my child in a house with a yard. In a neighborhood with a strong

I totally agree with you. What I am saying it is not like he presently made
one mistake and can discuss it. It is an ongoing problem that I am not sure he
considers a problem. He also has a wife that is supportive of this behavior.
It is hard to say that this is wrong if they see dad still has a loving wife, a
lot of money, popularity, etc. This is what they've grown up around and I
don't know if they see anything negative about it. Now, I look at him and see
a slurring sick man. They just see daddy.

I saw an episode of Dr. Phil the other night and they did a follow up on a past
guest that had a child taken away from her because the child was obese. While
in foster care the child slimmed down to a normal, healthy weight. She just
delivered another child and the day after the baby was born, she was taken away
from her. They said it was in the child's best interest. Here is what I
don't understand, how is it that they can do that so easily when their are
parents (like the Osbournes) who let the children do so many unsafe and
unhealthy things.

Certainly I do. I was reacting to the poster who said to "get out of the

Define modernity. I think in most cases (obviously with some exceptions),

Maybe not but it's a choice for all people to raise their children to think
that profanity is, well, profane. I guess it just depends on what kind of
world they want them to grow up to live in.

I'd like to see one of the Osborne kids grow up and try to fit into the
corporate world. As it is, they are pretty much destined to follow along in
their father's footsteps...IF they have any talent.

I think in so many words we both are saying that generations are getting worse
with time and modernism. Modernity is anything that changes for improvement.
For instance, a woman in the work place now is rather common and is considered
the "norm." However, 20-30 years ago and before that women were not in the work
place because it was considered a man job! Now women , like you just said
before, are working and the children are raising them selves or being latchkey
kids. Modernism has changed society's view on women and allowed them to enter
the work force is an example. Sometimes modernity, something that is supposed
to improve, ends up not in cases where a child raises themselves. I think you
know what I am getting at. Now I am not suggesting that women should not be
there, but I think you get my point about modernity.

But not even so much women in the work place, children are just bad! If you
like literature, read Flannery O'connors A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND, a classic
example.

OK. We're on the same page about the modernity (did that word come from the
same place as "consequentialism"!?). I didn't see the interview. And I'm not
saying he's a *bad* person. Everyone is redeemable. I just don't share the

It's not just the punk hair that really ever bothers me on that show.
(I've befriended people over the years of all ages with green
highlighted hair, orange hair, purple "cellophaned" hair, dyed "Billy
Idol" white hair, etc. My own hairdresser does all that crap to her
hair constantly. As long as I don't have to sleep next to Eddie
Munster hair, I'm fine.) Kelly wears thong underwear that sticks up
out of her pants and Jack often wears *no* underwear. That's just
disgusting. Come on, people. Nobody wants to see your bare a*s crack
or part of your undies risin' up out of jeans.

Ozzy called Kelly on it, too, and bugged her about her visible red
thong undies in the kitchen on one episode. Jack has bent over to feed
the dogs, pick up socks of his floor, and wrestle his pro skateboarder
houseguest Jason Dill, so that's how I've seen his rather visible lack
of boxers & brief habit.

I don't like how Ozzy's kids sometimes don't look clean. I don't get
it, either. The older sister Aimee has done modeling and is pretty as
a Monet painting, Ozzy's son Louis from his first marriage is
zit-free, perky clean, and very handsome and keeps his hair clean and
buzz cut whenever he's on the show.

Kelly and Jack always look like they just walked out of a burning
building or something, though. I've never seen two dirtier looking
kids on any t.v. show. I don't mind rock star hairstyles, either, but
you can *tell* when it looks greasy because of pomade, sprays, and
gels and when it's just flat out dirty from not washing it. Ozzy seems
religious about washing his hair and keeping his roots dark. He
showers and dyes constantly on that show and often has a towel on his
head from having just showered. Sharon's always at the salon. Why are
young Jacky and Kels so filthy lookin'????

As for the children and all of their cussing, I've seen every episode
of The Osbournes since it first aired. I'm opposed to the two kids
*EVER* cussing at the dinner table. As for them cussing in the house,
I've seen the two kids cuss each other out, but I don't recall seeing
them call their parents cuss names. I think it's to be expected that
they'd cuss at each other at that age. They shouldn't do so in front
of their parents, though. That's disrespectful. Also, I'm opposed to
how Jack calls the nanny a b**ch so often behind her back. That's so
ridiculous and I'm getting sick of it. She's just doing her job and if
he didn't smoke pot and have girls sneak into his bedroom after dark,
his parents would not need Melinda (I think that's the nanny's name?)
to ever watch dog him in the first place. If he wants more freedom, he
should get his own apartment and quit taking his anst out on the nanny
lady.

Howard Stern *ACTS* like with his ugly horse face he's seen, been
around on a 24 hour basis, and has "experienced" more boobs than any
man alive. That's what I can't stand about his show. He's just like
Lorenzo Llamas on that new Are You Hot t.v. show. He berates women
left and right for their boobs as if he's been around and dated a
bunch of Pam Anderson's left and right all his life. He's not so hot
himself. Just being on TV and the Radio isn't enough of a prize to me
for him to be acting that way. There's been countless times where I've
channel surfed and seen him cut some girl down about her boobs when
they really weren't that saggy, discolored, or bad looking. He must be
dreaming if he thinks his body is anything special. Everybody who
appears on his show is like 50 times hotter than he is (or Robin is)
and I think he's just jealous. I hate that show.

Modernity is a word. I am sure that Bonbon checked on that already :).
Consequentialism is a school of thought in philosophy (Some is "right" or
"wrong" depending on its consequence).

On a side note, Ozzie and Sharon have a history together. They didn't always
have the life of the rich and famous. To make a long story short Ozzie was
broke when he met Sharon (gave everything he had to his wife at the time so he
could be with Sharon). Sharon and Ozzie were sued by her father, his manager,
over stupid stuff. They ended up living in a van and Aimee, the oldest sister
no one ever sees, lived with them in the van. The brats were born yet.

Sharon could have screwed Ozzie royally and take all his money but she helped
his career.

But Sharon and Ozzie do love each other, that's for sure.

Jack is a sneaky f***! I wouldn't trust that little snake. I doubt any girl
would sleep with him if he wasn't rich regardless of what type of personality
he had. He could have eyes like Sinatra and a voice like Elvis Presley (AKA The
King) and I doubt girls would sleep with him.

I think he gets it from his maternal grandfather. The fat Yiddish man whom I

The hugeness isn't really the issue. I don't even know why you brought
it up??? I've channel surfed and seen 8 million "titless wonders"
wearing goofy looking cheap flourescent lingerie and exposing
themselves to "win their man" on Jerry Springer over the years, too.
In fact, I've met, worked in the same building as, or have known guys
who dated more skinny, bone thin White, Black, Indian, or Latino trash
in my life than fat trash to be quite honest. (A lot of extremely fat
women have trust issues regarding being cheated on according to the
ones I've met, so some of them don't even date.)

If somebody's going to expose themselves in their bra, they had better
HAVE something to expose in the first place. Skinny looking trash
exposing their "boobs" on t.v. just totally makes me laugh. Fat women
aren't anything special, either, but at least they have boobs to be
exposing in the first place. I really have to gasp and think "WHERE
ARE THEY AT?!?!?!" when those Pancake looking chicks on Springer's
show expose themselves. It's just really goofy. It's like they're
modeling a bra and not really showing off any skin.

Yeah, I've seen the show a few times while channel surfing. What gets me is
the women who willingly and knowingly subject themselves to this. There's no
shortages of bimbos trying to get on the show and strip to be critized by
Howard and his crew. What does that say about them?

Isn't it sick? I've seen girls say "I know I need to tan less or learn
to tan more evenly. You're right, Howard. My tan lines are not even
and it's making my breasts look worse."

Like what *IS* this Stern flake, Donna? Is he the God of tans and boob
size appropriateness?!?!

You know, for a guy who's sheet white and has never looked tan for a
day of his life, I just cannot get over the tan lines comments,
either. I also don't know very many men who *insist* that their
partner's chest be tanned, unfreckled, or free of the occasional mole
or beauty mark, which I've seen Stern b**ch about on many an occasion.

I feel sorry for the girls. They just want the TV exposure so that
they can be widely seen and maybe get a modeling contract, a layout,
or a bit part on some crummy 30 minute t.v. show.

And in the process of gaining that widely scene free publicity, they
have to put up with Stern and his clowns trying to accuse them of
falling asleep in the tanning booth or not looking porcelain and
freckle-free. DUH! If a girl has red hair, she's probably going to
have freckles on her chest, Howie. WAKE UP, DUDE!

;-)

The girls who come on the show with their MOTHERS I really have to
feel sorry for. I don't know any mom who'd allow their daughter to be
exposed to so much male ridicule all in one serving, personally. I
think those moms need a good kick in the teeth!

I think his time is over and he's starting to lose some of his edginess. He
used to be called a "Shock Jock" because he did things on the air nobody else
dared to.
Now everyone does it and it's getting boring. He's done nothing new in the
last few years. 10 years ago we'd all say to each other "did you hear what
Stern said today??". Now nobody cares. His schtick is old and tiresome.
Stern is like a 10th grader in school, always making comments about appearances
and making fun of people who are different in some way, but you know dam well
he goes home and plays with himself because he can only hope to dream one of
those women would like him.
Homely guys are the first to criticize a woman for not being perfect. Reminds
me of Shallow Hal, the movie. :-)
Everyone got upset about that movie because there supposedly were too many fat
jokes, but what about the premise that all pretty girls were bitches, vapid and
self centered? :-)

One of your sons was divorced before the age of forty and is the son
of a divorced mother who had two failed marriages of her own. How does
that make your child any more of a winner than the Osbourne kids? At
least the Osbourne kids didn't marry young and fail at it like you and
your son did. Sharon tried to *TALK* Jack into marrying and settling
down young about two weeks ago and he refused to hear of it. There's a
difference between being rebellious and being impetuous. Kids who
marry young are impetuous. Kids who party and swear sometimes are
rebellious.

BUT IT WAS NOT THE "NORM." Up until the 70's women were getting bashed at work,
especially factories, for doing "a mans job." Women in the work place didn't
all of a sudden happen after WW2, it was a progress.

WTF Am I talking about, that crap still goes on.

They did, no doubt, as a last resort at the time. Don't forget that factories
were short handed. You're arguing past me. You don't get my point. I am saying
that a woman in the work place is now widely accepted and thus taking mothers
out of the home.

But either way my point still stands whether they started 60 years ago like you
said or a slow progress like I said, modernity caused it. :) It was still the
progression of this country that caused others to come out and work whether it
be a dire need for workers (WW2) or an ideological change over years and year
of women's rights and single mothers.

I'm not being difficult, honestly. I stated that women in the work place was
not fully accepted till around 1970's. (Actually there is still some crap
today, women make 70% less then men in the same position) Anyhow, you refuted
that. I said fine, you can refute the year and part of history in which it
happened but that itself is irrelevant. But you can't refute that Modernity
overall caused and allowed women to join the work force whether it be a need
for skilled workers or a political and ideological change.

Again, to get back on track. Modernism is something that is great on the
surface but is it great if the nuclear family is changing because of it?
Modernity changed greatly the social institution we call family!

I think Jack and Kelly get a bad rap because of their attitude. If one watches
the show one cannot help but think "Sharon or OZZIE, smack him or her!"
However, they are rather hard working, Kelly is doing a singing stunt and Jack
is dumping money into a record label. And lets not forget, they are very young!

She has her own apartment. They did an interview on 20/20 or a Barbra
Walters special and she said she moved out to keep from accidentally being
filmed. I no longer have my satelitte dish, and miss MTV. Think I'll call
cable and get it added to my program listings. I love watching the show. I
really hate how people knock this family. The boy they adopted said he went
to school with Kelly and she was the only person there who went up to him
when he first arrived years ago and struck up a friendly conversation to get
to know him. He said she was the only 'real' person at their stuck up
school. When his mother became ill, Sharron promised her that they would do
all they could to make sure her son had a good life. And they've done just
that. They've adopted him and are putting him through college.

Exactly. I love the show as well, and really admire the love these people
have for each other despite their eccentricities. My mom even cried during
the Ozzy and Sharon re-commitment episode, hehe. They're not perfect, but
they do show love toward each other, which is what the world is sorely
lacking these days. And, what they did by adopting that boy was wonderful.

Exactly, for as bad as they are they make up for it 2 folds.

Well considering that Jack has gotten some bands signed to the label he
works for, that shouldn't be a problem.

Not everyone WANTS to work in the corporate world. Not everyone wants to
have a stereotypical 9-5 job. But if a person wants to do that, that's
fine. If Jack and Kelly want to stay in the music business that's fine.

Unlike most of the words used in your reply, modernity is an actual word. It
is a huge concept in sociology and philosophy.

It's big in literature also. To reiterate, Flannery O'Connor wrote about it in

Where I live in the Pacific NW we know (yet many young couples often
forget...LOL) that rapists hide in the bushes in suburbia just as
easily as they roam the streets of metropolitan cities. The Green
River Killer didn't case out his victims beside the Space Needle after
all. He went to Kent, WA. Maybe in other parts of the country the
burbs are safer, however with all of the trees, moss, creeks,
woodsheds, and cabins in the Pac NW, I don't find the mountains, the
islands, or suburbia to be any safer of a place. When there are no
street lights surrounding your property, it's just a haven for a
predator.

The Osbornes is no more reality tv than any of the other so-called
reality programs.

A few weeks ago when Ozzie & Sharon were interviewed on some program,
they admitted much of the program is planned out ahead of time.

I think it's to bad a drugged out, alcoholic, with a half dead brain has
become a role model for anyone. It's pitiful when that's the best tv has
to offer.

You said, quote, "Like pigs in shit, if you will.") Question. What
the heck does "if you will" mean? That is one of the most annoying
phrases in the english language.

I hear it all everywhere, especially on the news. "A fire, if you
will, burned a house to the ground." "There may be a war with Iraq, if
you will."

What does it have to do with if I will or won't? Just state what you
have to say.

The phrase has no meaning. In your statement, are you saying if I
won't it's not "like pigs in shit"?

You sound anal retentive and your attitude suggests like you enjoy being on the
toilet to much, if you will.

It is not the case that if you won't then it's not like pigs in shit. Or in
symbolic logic, ~( ~p ^ ~q)
Therefore, if you won't it is not like pigs in shit! (~p --> ~q)
So I think you're right!

The problem with Stern is he should have called it quits years ago. He
hasn't come up with anything original since I was in high school.

Anal rententive? No, just an honest observation. The anal retentive
folks ar those who are unsure of what they are saying, or perhaps lack
confidence . Adding "if you will" seems to indicate the speaker isn't
really sure of what he/she is saying and is seeking approval from
others.

Same thing with folks who end almost every sentence with a question.

Last fall the state ran an anti-smoking ad on tv. A boy about 12 was
talking about his father's cancer death. "I loved my father? We did
everything together? I really miss him? It's not right that he died?"
Every sentence ended in a question. Was this kid numb? Doesn't he know
if he loved his father, misses him, etc.? Why was he asking?

When I speak, I know what I'm talking about. If I buy a new car, I'll
say I bought a new car. I don't ask someone else if I did.

Then there's the folks who leave "d"s and "t"s out of the middle of
words when they speak. Didn't become di'nt, mountain is mou'in (no n or
t), etc.

All part of the dumbing down of america.

I am glad to see that you have a zealous interest in written communication! I
think to suit your urges to correct the world of bad grammar you should maybe
get into English or journalism at a local University. But since you know it all
already maybe you could just get a job correcting papers or lecturing about
your pet peeves at a local university.

I can't rag on you I have a couple "pet peeve" of my own that relate to
English. Well most of all is the people who get on other people who misspell a
word. I don't like that. That's trivial to me but of course it is what some
people all day! Some people are not good spellers just like some people really
suck at math. There is a small section in the brain that is thought to be
designated to spelling and some people are weaker than others in that area,
hence we have bad spellings. It has nothing to do with intelligence.

But at any rate I hate when people use "due to" or "due to the fact." What's
wrong with using "because" once in a while? But I don't say anything because
that's how they learned it. My written communication requirement in college
prohibited using "due to." I think it was the professor's pet peeve and it
rubbed off on me!

But anyhow, if you hate me using "if you will" so much that you confront me
about it then I will stop. Are you happy? One down and about 286 million to go.
Oh, that's right, a lot of people from other countries can speak English so
let's say one down and about 4 billion to go.
