Oh yes, definitely HODS, for the familiar storyline and all the classic
DS characters.

Just for myself, I think that NODS fares better as a quirky, atmospheric
film in its own right, rather than for any DS connection, as it's so far
removed from any resemblence to the original. Viewing it as "a DS
movie" inevitably disappoints, but has its moments if one puts those
comparisons and expectations aside.

Just my humble opinion... :)

There are parts of HODS I like, but the decision to re-tell much of the
Barnabas story a la Hammer-house-of-horror style (especially the way
the vampire-Carolyn segment is shot) painted them into a corner. The
Barnabas character is never developed and we get no idea of his origin
other than when he says something along the lines of "when they put
this curse on me...." Where the show was more of a traditional gothic
romance that utilized horror movie & scifi conventions to frame its
storylines, HODS is more of a traditional pure-horror vampire film.

But, I like it better than NODS, which is just slow & boring, to be
honest. The same basic story was done a little more interestingly a few
years later - If you can find it, the movie of the week "Death At Love
House" with Kate Jackson (again) this time married to Robert Wagner
(instead of Selby) and losing him to the ghost of a woman who loved him
in an earlier incarnation, isn't too bad, and the old-movie-Hollywood
aspect of it was kinda cool. Bear in mind I haven't seen this thing
probably since they ran it back in '76! You've been warned!

Am I the only one who loved the entire Dark Shadows series but
hated both the movies?

After seeing the entire Dark Shadows series a number of times
I find the movies to be rather pointless.

After seeing both movies I wish they had not been made.

Although I certainly enjoy HODS, I agree that it does lack the character
development of the original, which was the same issue the revival series
had in trying to compress the entire 5-month 1795 storyline, with all
its rich, heartfelt tragedy, gothic romance and family history, into
just a few 1-hour episodes. The original had the luxury of time to draw
the audience in that you just can't do in a 90-minute film.

There's really no other genre like the soap opera that offers such an
abundance of time to develop rich storylines and characters, over years
or sometimes even decades. It would have been virtually impossible in
any other genre to have an Erica Kane, a Luke and Laura, a Viki Buchanan
or a Barnabas Collins as the beloved legendary, iconic chaacters they
are today.

I honestly don't know how HODS would fare for non-DS fans who don't have
the background of the original to "project" onto the film. I'm sure
most of us subconsciously place the characters' complete TV history onto
their big-screen counterparts as we're watching it, and probably get
much more out of it than someone else would, I imagine...
