Here's how things stand in the campaign to get Daria seasons released on
good-quality, legal DVDs.

a.. Over 4,000 people have voted for Daria at tvshowsondvd.com, making it
the third-most-asked-for show, behind only Batman and The Wonder Years.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/shows/Daria/323

b.. More than 26,000 people (yes, that's not a typo - more than twenty-six
thousand people) have signed a petition asking Viacom to release Daria on
DVD.
http://www.petitiononline.com/dvdaria/

c.. 88% of fans who filled in the survey at fansite The Irony Maiden say
they would buy every season if it came out on DVD. 96% would buy at least
one season.
Survey: http://www.sylvesternet.freeserve.co.uk/members/daria/
Site: http://www.sylvesternet.freeserve.co.uk/irony-maiden/

d.. Many fans have written to MTV Home Entertainment asking for Daria on
DVD.
Letter-writing campaign: http://tinyurl.com/48ltd

e.. Pirated Daria season sets have been selling on eBay for large sums.
That should show legal DVD publishers that there's a market.

f.. A request was submitted on the "What classic TV do you want us to
publish?" board at Shout! Factory. At the time of writing, it has received
only one indication of support.

What've I missed off?

Just out of curiosity, how much progress has been made, in, say, the
last 3 years? I know a big part of the licensing issue is the music,
which MTV had a site license for, but a company doing a DVD release
would have to pay small royalties to dozens of artists and labels in
order to release the series as aired.

Measured by how many DVDs have been released, none. 8-(

A lot of effort has been made, though, by committed fans who've succeeded in
keeping _Daria_ on the radar. Three independent publishers of cult TV DVDs
have reportedly been encouraged enough to make enquiries about licensing the
show.

I fear that "as aired" may not be economically achievable, at least in the
short or
medium term. My own view is that it's the original music is jam, not bread
and butter: the real strength is in the writing, directing and acting. I've
happily bought all the official VHS releases though original music is not
featured throughout (or at all? - never checked - which kind of proves my
point, at least as far as my own enjoyment of the show is concerned).

I agree with you, I was just positing a possible cause for the
problems we've had convincing companies that the release will be
viable. Also, what's really tragic about Daria is that something like
trying to get MTV to put the series up for another run is unlikely to
be successful because those of us who grew up with the show are
rapidly leaving the 18-24 demographic that MTV spends the vast
majority of its money catering to. Especially since a large chunk of
MTV's viewership is younger than their target demographic, Daria would
have major issues relating some of the humor to these kids because
we're now over a decade after the premier of season 1.
