The 2000 CD "The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes and Villains" included theme
songs for each Powerpuff Girl. "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)" was
written and recorded by Shonen Knife. Swedish indie band Komeda provided
"B.L.O.S.S.O.M.". And in keeping with the neo-psychedelic tone of much
of the CD, Dressy Bessy provided "Bubbles". My friend, fellow PPG fan
and avid record collector Rich Finegan discovered why this song has such
a late 60's / early 70's sound to it.

The song was written and released in 1970 by a group called the Free
Design. This group did jazzy, cheerful pop with some baroque touches.
They were basically the Star Trek of pop groups: they were not a
commercial success at the time, but they developed a very devoted
following at the time, and were re-discovered by later generations. Beck
and Cornelius both consider The Free Design as influences. For more on

The 1970 album "Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love" has the original version of
"Bubbles". The Dressy Bessy cover basically takes this song and changes
one verse to connect it to the Powerpuff Girls. The original lyrics can
be found at

The Free Design albums and singles are available through Amazon.

Finally, Rich Finegan found an even earlier song that could have been
used as a Powerpuff theme:

Gods of Heaven, gods of Earth,
Let everything be as it should be;
Thus shall it be!"

"Drizzle, Drazzle, Drozzle, Drome,
Time for this one to come home!"
