Joss Whedon Wants To Add More Female Superheroes To ‘The Avengers 2′

By Travis Woods..

Between such works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, Joss Whedon is
known for featuring strong female characters in his TV shows and films. And
while The Avengers did have Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow kicking ass and
helping to save the world, the film was still a festival of testosterone
between Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and pointless archer that
gives Jeremy Renner something to do. Now, Whedon says he wants to up the
female hero quotient in Avengers 2.

In a recent roundtable interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which the
Avengers cast and Whedon spoke about the film, Whedon stated that powerful
women was something that The Avengers lacked:

Whedon joked, “I think we need to get some more men on the team,” while Thor’s
Chris Hemsworth looked around Johansson at Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr.,
Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson and agreed, “Yes, there
are too few of us.”

Whedon went on to say that studios will argue that “a woman cannot headline
an action movie,” but that “after The Hunger Games they might stop telling
you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, it’s done a great
service. And after The Avengers, I think it’s changing.”

While Whedon’s aim is an admirable one, the problem now is to find a way to
organically introduce new female superheroes into a franchise that is
already overstuffed with major characters. Further, which Marvel female
heroes make the cut? Wasp, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch? And how do they get
introduced into the Marvel franchise? Via Captain America 2, Iron Man 3, or
Thor 2? However they appear, Avengers 2 might have to lose a major hero or
two to make room for some new blood, as this franchise is starting to get
rather crowded.

Aliens, Lara Croft.

Why?

Incredible Hulk is the film in the franchise with the least likely
sequel. Maybe adding She-Hulk will help it over the line. Of course,
Mark's signed up for 6 Marvel films so it would be hard to get him out
of The Avengers 2 (and 2 Hulks wouldn't work).

Wasp could probably be introduced in an Avengers film or an Ant-man
film... but would she work in an Avengers film?

Does Scarlet Witch count as a mutant or an Avenger for film contracts?

The Wasp would obviously make sense.

The Scarlet Witch probably wouldn't be possible, unfortunately, since she's
tied to the XMen, and probably part of the franchise they sold to Fox.

She-Hulk was only west-coast avengers, right ?

I don't quite remember other permanent line-up female avengers... not that
surprisingly, considering when it was written.

I'm not sure there's a lot of reason for Thor to stick around without Loki,
though...

Speculation: what villain ? if they indeed bring the big T., they *have*
to get Captain Marvel too.

Could they twist things and try for Miss Marvel instead ? that would be fun.

I think there's consensus agreement on her likelihood, based mainly on the
likelihood for Hank Pym.

She was name checked on one of the 'mutant' lists in the X-Men movies, and
Quicksilver was in X-Men: Origins.

>She-Hulk was only west-coast avengers, right ?

Shulkie was first in the WCA, but was also in NYC group at different times,
and even filled in as the Thing's temporary replacement with the FF.

Yeah, you don't have to fill me in for FF, I followed that much more closely
than the avengers... ;)

These ones are good.

not too excited...

yep ^

That would be fun, especially with Captain America around.

Argl.

aka the real one :) Still not really that interesting.

full time loser. She also was a defender...

Well, they could have fun with Cobie Smulders... even if she's "not" agent 13.

>Jessica Jones (Jewel, Power Woman, etc.)
not too exciting.

True... but with an Ant-man film being made possible duplication.

That's what I thought. Fox would probably fight it... I'm sure the
character would fit well into a First Class sequel. I wonder what the
rights actually cover.

> She-Hulk was only west-coast avengers, right ?

Dunno, but I don't see that as the biggest issue. She's a copy of the
Hulk. If the Hulk is in The Avengers you don't need the duplication.
If he isn't in The Avengers she becomes a token replacement. A She-
Hulk, Bucky, War Machine Avengers doesn't make the money The Avengers
did.

Not many, and even less big names.

Who can replace him?

I was wondering that.

Unlikely due to him being retired in his movie?

There you go.

Still the "Hulk duplicate/replacement" factor.

No longer in The Avengers.

None jump out as strong names.

> Ms. Marvel
> Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau)

Maybe. Especially with Thanos...

> Invisible Woman (FF)
> Crystal (of the Inhumans) (FF?)

As stated FF?

> Spider-Woman (Julia Csrpenter)
> Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)

Spider-Man franchise?
> Firestar (X-Men?)

As stated X-Men?

> Captain Britain/Lionheart (Kelsey Leigh Shorr)

Maybe.

> Jessica Jones (Jewel, Power Woman, etc.)

Maybe. Just failed to get her own TV show. Don't know if that helps
or hurts.

The next question is which ones can organically appear in an existing
or proposed movie to help them along:

Iron Man 3
Ant-Man 1
Captain American 2
Thor 2
(Incredible Hulk 2)
(Black Widow)
(Nick Fury/SHIELD)
(War Machine)
(Inhumans)

I can't see the Inhumans being a big draw.

I think DC has some good possible dark horse super teams to exploit:
Legion of Superheroes
Metal Men
Doom Patrol
Teen Titans (although not of interest to me)

One of the things that made the Avengers so good was that the
production budget was $220 million.
This was maybe the first Marvel movie that I thought had enough action
in it.
But a budget that high demands that the film be a huge blockbuster,
and that's not going to happen with some lesser teams.

Really big cast. Expensive future setting. No big name characters.

But I think it could be cool done right.

Works better are a cartoon, I think.

Maybe. If done cheap.

If DC did an Avengers like JLA series of films and followed JLA with a
Batman & Flash sequel introducing their sidekicks, maybe.

True.
