SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR WILL RETURN TO THE CW, SAYS PRESIDENT
by: Kevin Fitzpatrick

Like any sane TV viewer and avid ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ fan, we were
overjoyed to learn that Sarah Michelle Gellar was returning to the network
that made her famous, even if it was a more female-skewing soap opera series
in ‘Ringer.’ So while not altogether surprising – given its critical
reception and impressively low ratings – part of us still died inside to see
the chosen one cancelled off the network this past week. Still, might
Gellar have a different future at the network?

Speaking at today’s CW Upfront presentation, CW President Mark Pedowitz had
a few choice words about the demise of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s TV return
vehicle ‘Ringer,’ and where the actress might find a place in the future.
‘Ringer’ debuted to moderate numbers in its initial September 2011 premiere,
though quickly fell off and faced an unfortunate break that affected its
viewership. Says Pedowitz of the series:

I don’t think anything went wrong with ‘Ringer.’ I was happy it was there….
The show was well-crafted, well-produced, well-written, but it was a
complicated serialized show.

After it finished a run in the fall and came back in January, the audience
went somewhere else. And it just could not find the 18-34 demo that we
hoped.

Still, one failed experiment does not a partnership break, and Pedowitz
insists that Gellar could still find some place with the network.
Explaining that Gellar herself understood the network’s decision to axe the
show, and commenting on the number of Gellar fans who sent irate e-mails at
‘Ringer’s cancellation, Pedowitz vowed to bring SMG back to the network,
either on another show or in a producing capacity. “She will be back on the
CW in some form,” he claimed.

What say you? Was the cancellation of ‘Ringer’ justified, or should Sarah
Michelle Gellar have been given more consideration in light of her history?
What role would you like to see the actress take on The CW in the future?
Give us your thoughts in the comments!

Some of us are doing the happy dance at the idea that Ringer was
cancelled.

The sucked big time. The writing sucked, the characters were not
likable, and I keep going back to Amy Sherman-Palidino's comments
about not being able to do a show with proper staffing and funding.

Yes, absolutely, positively, without a doubt. The show suced
big time.

or should Sarah

Buffy.

I'm thinking that since Joss Whedon is now has the most profitable
Movie these days, there might be a shot at some epic BTVS. The big
question is, could an older and more drabby and Ringered, SMG be
rehabed and would she have the sense to accept a chance at it,
knowing she could be rejected.

I'd like to see a 300 Million dollar Buffy film and Trilogy.

Even if Pedowitz was sincere, he overlooked one critical factor:
SMG does not have the talent or versatility to carry a show by
herself. She requires a strong supporting cast. That's why Ringer
was doomed from the beginning and why Sarah is unlikely to ever equal
her fame as Buffy.

Why do you care so much if you don't like it?

It was tense and riveting for about the first half of the season, despite being
unbelievable.

I thought it got more interesting, and must-see toward the end of
the series.

Earlier on there was an atmosphere non-stop that Bridget could be exposed at any
moment, and it increased with each additional person she told or who found out.
For me that tension largely dissipated in the second half.
