SUMMARY: Buffy finds out what she's back to fight, and Cain and Lilith's
machinations against the Scooby Gang reach all-too personal proportions. To

XANDER: There's something I can't fight.
SNYDER: You're a whipping boy... set on a sacrificial stone.
'The Cell'
VOICE IN THE LIGHT: She belongs in her world.
'Redemption'
LILITH: My dear, sweet child, surely you, of all people, would know that
the way to destroy a Slayer is through her kin?
MALCOLM: You're on the right track.
FAITH: What?
MALCOLM: To redemption. That is why you're here.
The Man from eps 1-3 eyes Lilith with contempt
'Body And Soul'
WILLOW: She will be reborn.
Buffy rises out of her grave and runs past the gang.
The next two are spoken over the scene in which Feral Buffy chases the
vampire.
GILES: Buffy has spent time in a dimension of unspeakable torment. Even
when she regains her senses, she will still be carrying a part of that with
her.
SPIKE: We're all hunters at heart, vampires and Slayers. It's not about
who's good and who's evil. The Slayer doesn't know the difference.
Willow's hospital room.
TARA: She's okay now. It's over.
TEASER
1: INT. PRISON CELL. DAY.
Not very pleasant looking. A single bed, some posters on the wall. A way
down the corridor, we hear the clanking of keys.
The camera pans around towards the noise, and we see that it's a female
PRISON WARDEN. She looks directly at us and puts the key in the lock.
PRISON WARDEN
(Strange, distant voice)
Faith?
Yes, this is a dream, and we're viewing things from Faith's POV.
FAITH
(OS)
What have I done now?
PRISON WARDEN
Follow me.
The guard moves off, and we follow her out into:
2: INT. CORRIDOR. DAY
It doesn't look normal (but then it is a dream). The cells are tightly
packed together and we can see arms outstretched through the bars. We
continue following the warden down the corridor.
Through the bars we hear:
FEMALE VOICE #1
You're a murderer
FEMALE VOICE #2
Killer.
MORE VOICES
(Chanting)
Killer. Killer. Killer. Killer.
The voices grow louder, reaching an almost deafening crescendo until we
reach the end of the row of cells, and stop.
Then the WARDEN disappears, and in her place is ALLAN FINCH, the deputy
mayor that Faith killed way back in S3.
He turns to face her, sucking chest wound and all.
FINCH
(Dryly)
Hello, killer.
FAITH
Y...you're dead.
FINCH
Yes I am. You killed me. You killed me, and you didn't care. Don't you
remember?
FAITH
I remember.
FINCH
(Too cheerful)
I guess I should be proud. I mean... killing me is what set you on the path
you're on today.
FAITH
I'm sorry.
FINCH
It's too late for that. I'm dead. You said it yourself.
Faith/the camera turns around to face away from Finch, revealing the
Mayor's office. And inside it, the MAYOR, holding a cobra in one hand and
Faith's knife in the other. He looks over to us and smiles real big.
Instinctively, Faith starts to walk towards him.
FINCH
(OS)
That's not the right way.
Faith/the camera turns back round again to face Finch, but he's now
replaced by a HELL DEMON from 'The Cell'.
DEMON
(Echoey, distant)
Follow me.
Faith does so. She goes down a long prison corridor, which continues until
it changes and morphs into the grey concrete corridor from 'The Cell' and
the other episodes featuring Buffy's stint in the hell dimension.
At the end of the corridor, we see a large door.
DEMON
We're here.
The demon disappears, and the doors glide open of their own accord. Faith
walks through into:
3: INT. LARGE CHAMBER. DAY
It's the Hellgod chamber from eps 4 and 6, where the ritual was performed.
And it's completely empty.
On the floor, the ritual circle that they used to send Buffy back remains
intact. In the middle, some ceremonial robes.
Faith walks into the middle of the circle and picks them up. From behind
her, we hear:
VOICE
You won't find her here.
ANGLE: Faith from the front. Behind her we see the FIRST HELLGOD in human
guise.
She looks around at him.
FAITH
Find who? Who am I supposed to find?
FIRST HELLGOD
She left.
The entire room disappears into nothing, leaving only Faith standing in:
4: INT. CEMETERY. NIGHT
Again, completely deserted and silent.
Faith wheels around to see the grave she's standing by. It's Buffy's. And
there's a hole where the ground used to be.
And in place of the grave, we now see BUFFY.
And then we cut to:
5: INT. FAITH'S MOTEL ROOM. EARLY MORNING
Faith starts awake, and looks around, more than a bit wigged.
OPENING CREDITS
6: INT. FAITH'S MOTEL ROOM. DAY
Faith is training with Malcolm, who stands in front of her wearing
protective pads while she punches.
FAITH
I'm telling you, that was my dream.
MALCOLM
And you think it prophesied something?
FAITH
Something like Buffy returning from the dead.
MALCOLM
It's not...
(Thump)
... unusual to dream about someone you were... close to.
FAITH
Buffy and I were never close. We tried to kill each other. There's no love
lost between us.
MALCOLM
Not that kind of close. You're both Slayers. You're linked through the
calling.
FAITH
(Genuinely didn't know)
Huh. I guess that's why we had those shared dreams and crap.
MALCOLM
Exactly.
FAITH
So you're saying it's just a coincidence?
MALCOLM
Well, I...
FAITH
I don't buy that. The last time I dreamed about Buffy, I dreamed that she
died. And now I'm dreaming about her coming back to life. And... dreams
that come true... part of the Slayer package, right?
MALCOLM
You believe that Buffy is alive?
FAITH
(Stops hitting)
Yeah. I do.
She sits down on the side of her bed.
MALCOLM
(Out comes truth)
The council authorised Mr. Giles to take a book with him from England... in
order to return Buffy from the Slayer's afterworld.
FAITH
And it worked?
MALCOLM
No.
FAITH
So why...
MALCOLM
The book contains rituals pertaining to many different dimensions. If
someone could find out where she was...
FAITH
... they could bring her back.
(Quietly)
My God.
(Aloud, to him)
So what's the big plan? I mean, they sent me here knowing that they were
going to try and bring Buffy back from the beyond.
MALCOLM
Truthfully.... I doubt even she knows why she's back.
CUT TO:
7: INT. BUFFY'S HOUSE. LIVING ROOM. DAY
Buffy, Dawn and Giles sit, talking. Buffy is stood up, pacing around,
looking slightly lost.
DAWN
This is... weird.
GILES
Quite.
DAWN
Having you back and all... and... not a zombie.
BUFFY
(Acknowledging what she said but choosing not to comment)
Giles, I need to know why they needed me back here.
GILES
Well... Willow thought... after the first spell failed... she'd found...
BUFFY
Not Willow... the Powers that Be.
GILES
It was they that requested you come back?
BUFFY
They said I had a destiny. That I had to be there... here... for the
Apocalypse.
DAWN
Another one?
BUFFY
No... they told me... they... nothing I've fought before now has been an
apocalypse.
(To Giles)
Giles, they don't just send people back from the dead for no reason. I need
to know.
GILES
In recent months I had read a prophecy about a Slayer that would return
from the dead to face an apocalypse, but I believed that had already
happened when the Master rose.
(Slightly aside)
But with our new vampire friends in town...
BUFFY
New vamps?
GILES
Well, so far we know very little about them. Only that they are incredibly
old and powerful. Their leader is Cain... almost the oldest vampire on
record.
BUFFY
So... could be apocalypse time again?
(Pause)
Well I'm ready. Whatever they've got coming... I'm ready.
GILES
Buffy, I don't think you are. Not yet.
BUFFY
I was brought back to fight this thing. That's what I'm going to do.
GILES
Yes, well that's what Faith said before she went off to fight Cain and was
nearly killed.
BUFFY
(Shocked)
Faith's here?
DAWN
She's not quite as evil.
BUFFY
No, I don't mean that... I mean... why would the Hellgods be so desperate
to bring me back when there's already a Slayer around to do the fighting?
DAWN
Hellgods?
BUFFY
Glory's two brothers. It's hard to explain but.. they're not as evil as
you'd think.
GILES
Apart from the torturing of innocent souls.
BUFFY
They don't torture the innocent. Actually, they let their minions do most
of the torturing.
DAWN
You were innocent. They tortured you.
BUFFY
I wasn't supposed to be there.
(To Giles)
I need to see Faith.
GILES
Faith? Why would you...
BUFFY
Slayer stuff. She needs to know why I was brought back.
(Slight aside)
And I need to know why she was let out.
And we go over to:
8: INT. WILLOW'S HOSPITAL ROOM. DAY
Willow is sitting up in bed, looking much healthier than when we last saw
her. She looks up and smiles as she notices Xander, Anya and Tara enter the
room.
WILLOW
Hey, guys.
Xander's first up with the hug.
XANDER
How's my Willow?
WILLOW
She's fine.
ANYA
(Apprehensively hugging)
So you're okay now? No more fainting?
WILLOW
No more fainting. I.. I hope.
TARA
(Hugs and kisses her)
Hey, baby.
WILLOW
(Kisses back)
Hey.
(Looks around at them)
So what are we all doing here? It's not visiting time.
TARA
The doctors said you're doing fine now, so we've come to take you home.
WILLOW
Sounds good to me.
(To Xander)
How's Buffy?
XANDER
She... she's better. You know, she can talk... but I think she's still all
wigged out on her vacation in Hell.
ANYA
I saw her turned back to normal. She had this light that shot through into
her eyes. I haven't seen anything like it since this time I granted a wish
for a man to be turned inside out and...
Disgusted looks from the others.
... well, you don't really want to hear that anecdote right now.
WILLOW
(Grossed out)
We really don't.
XANDER
How's this going to work? I mean, she's dead. Officially. There was a
funeral. There's even a death certificate. I mean... how are people going
to react when they see that she's still alive?
ANYA
She won't be able to get a credit card. Or a bank loan. She could get a
job, though, if she went under a pseudonym...
XANDER
Beneath all the money-obsessed Anya speak, we do have a point here. I
mean... aside from being the Slayer... where's she going to fit in?
TARA
I think she... she'll be more focused now. On the slaying.
A nurse enters the room.
NURSE
Miss Rosenberg?
WILLOW
Yeah?
NURSE
Are you ready to go now?
WILLOW
Sure.
9: INT. BUFFY'S HOUSE. LIVING ROOM. EVENING
Buffy is all dressed up and ready to kick some demon ass. Dawn and Giles
edge around her a little concerned.
GILES
Buffy, are you sure you're up to going?
BUFFY
Giles, for the thousandth time... I'm sure.
GILES
You've been... resurrected. It's not something that happens to everyone. I
mean... you're bound to be somewhat disorientated.
BUFFY
Oh, I am. I close my eyes and all I can see is those damn demons making me
cut myself. I look around me and I think I'm still there, that all this is
just a dream, or some form of mental torture devised by those creatures.
(Looks beyond them towards the door)
But as far as slaying goes... I'm totally focused. In actual fact, I'm more
focused than I've ever been. Besides... Faith's likely to be around, and we
have things to discuss.
GILES
I know.
BUFFY
You guys...
(Realises)
You'll be okay.
DAWN
We will.
Buffy hugs her sister briefly and heads toward the door. Before she does,
she hears:
DAWN
Buffy?
BUFFY
(Turns around)
Uh-huh?
DAWN
(Smiles)
I'm real glad you're back.
BUFFY
(Smiles back)
Me too.
She heads out.
10: EXT. CEMETERY. NIGHT
Faith and Malcolm sit on a gravestone, waiting for a vamp to rise.
FAITH
I don't get why we have to do this.
MALCOLM
Because there is a man under there that is due to rise as a vampire
tonight.
FAITH
How d'you know?
MALCOLM
I just know.
FAITH
What is this? I mean... half the graves in Sunnydale have vacancies. That's
a hell of a lot of vamps, even by this town's standards.
MALCOLM
It's very simple. They're recruiting.
FAITH
Cain and his gang.
MALCOLM
I wouldn't say 'gang'... so much as 'army'. And it wouldn't be the first
time.
FAITH
This has happened before?
MALCOLM
Did any of your other watchers tell you of the Vigeous Crusades?
FAITH
I heard of 'em. Armies of vampires wreaking havoc.
MALCOLM
Aye. And who d'you think was right there, doin' most of the recruitin'?
FAITH
(Not too surprised)
Huh. And he's what; trying to do the same thing here?
MALCOLM
I'm not certain but...
The ground on the gravestone starts to crack, and we see a pair of arms
push through it. Faith and Malcolm both look over, slightly taken aback.
FAITH
Looks like the new recruit's just been drafted.
ANGLE: The grave. The newly-sired vamp is now out of his grave.
It morphs straight into game face and makes for the two of them.
MALCOLM
At least I wasn't wrong.
Faith jumps up and starts kicking the vamp. He lands with a thud back on
his own gravestone.
He gets back up and charges her, but she's too quick for him.
She takes her stake out, and sticks it in his heart. The vamp looks at her,
as if to say 'What the hell's going on?'; and is dust.
FAITH
That was too easy.
MALCOLM
One down...
FAITH
Miles to go.
(Turns to face him)
Let's go.
MALCOLM
Go? Go where?
FAITH
Go kill evil things.
They move off. They walk across the graveyard and into:
11: EXT. PARK NEAR CEMETERY. NIGHT
Malcolm and Faith walk along.
He notices something off-screen.
MALCOLM
Looks like something already has.
ANGLE: Malcolm's POV. We see the three demon bodies Buffy slew in the last
episode. Faith looks down at them in shock.
MALCOLM
I think you might have been right about Buffy.
CUT TO:
12: EXT. STREET NEAR PARK. NIGHT
Buffy and a vampire are mid-fight. She hits him hard in the stomach sending
him back, and plants a roundhouse kick to his chin. He kicks her out of the
way.
VAMPIRE
Slayer. I thought you were dead.
Buffy kicks him again.
BUFFY
Rumours of my death...
She punches him to the ground.
... have been greatly...
The stake comes out and she sticks it into his heart.
... exagerrated.
And he's dust.
Round the corner come Faith and Malcolm. They notice Buffy. Malcolm looks
wigged. Faith doesn't. The two girls turn to face each other.
FAITH
(Not surprised)
Buffy.
BUFFY
Hello, Faith.
There is a moment between them.
