Former Brady Bunch kid honored for lagoon work

CARLSBAD � Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady on the Brady Bunch
TV series, was recognized Tuesday evening by the Carlsbad City Council
for his work promoting the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation and its
efforts to keep the Carlsbad lagoon healthy.

�It�s very important for everyone who lives in the area to recognize
that natural habitats are not natural anymore. It takes money and effort
to keep them in shape,� Knight said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
�Agua Hedionda is a vital natural environment and a vital recreation
area.�

Knight, who lives in Los Angeles, became involved with the foundation in
2008. Longtime Hollywood public relations man David Mirisch, who is
involved with fundraisers, contacted Knight to see if he would help
promote a fishing tournament for the foundation. Mirisch�s wife, Sandy,
had been a talent agent who represented five of the six actors who
played the Brady kids.

Knight took to the foundation�s environmental cause, said current
executive director Lisa Rodman, and has since promoted other events,
such as a kayak regatta and last year�s Lagoon Day.

Knight said he�s had an affinity for San Diego County since he was a
child, and his father performed at the Old Globe Theatre.

�I�ve passed through or by these lagoons since I was a little kid, and
I�m happy to be a person to help bring recognition to it,� he said.

Lagoon Day 2012 will be held at 10 a.m. July 22 at the lagoon, and
Knight plans to be there. The lagoon is at 1580 Cannon Road.

It was the first time in years anybody had recognized the former Brady
Bunch Boy. He was moved to tears.

That's a bad spot to be in. Half the time you're hoping nobody bothers
you, the other half you are upset nobody has bothered you.

I think I've told my Leonard Cohen story here before. I was walking up
the street and pass the bar that's at the corner of Marie Ann (I don't
think the song is named after the street). It's the first hot day of the
spring, this bar has a sort of garage door window at the front and it's
open. So I glance into the bar for some reason, and there's Leonard
Cohen. About 20 years ago, so I thought he wasn't spending much time
in Montreal. He must have noticed that I recognized him, since he nods
back. And I go on my way.

Later, I realize it probably was a defense mechanism on his part. By
acknowledging me, he hoped I wouldn't go over and say "aren't you Leonard
Cohen" and bother his drinking. I likely wouldn't have gone over, I
remember the time I met Joan Baez and suddenly had nothing to say (we were
backstage after a concert, she offered us the food that they'd laid out
for her), but it likely does work. And 20 years later, I have this great
Leonard Cohen story.
