Okay,
how sick is this.,
she just told her dad via the live feed,
to remind him of the upcoming "sporting" dove hunt
and to reserve her a room so she can go
hunt and kill birds..

she kills birds for enjoyment.

I'd like to hog-tie her,
roll her in honey,
and put her out near a desert fire-ant colony
and watch the fun begin
(bring ear plugs., the screaming won't be pretty..)

I've never heard of eating a dove. I mean:

Fried Dove
Dove and Dumplings
Stuffed Dove
Sweet and Sour Dove
Popcorn Dove
Dove Wing Dings
Stir Fried Dove
Dove Noodle Soup

I've never heard of these recipes before.

That's because you're not from the south.

Dove hunting is very common and traditional.

I'm no Ted Nugent, I don't even hunt, so don't get that impression. I grew
up eating dove, though because my brother, dad, grandfather, all dove
hunted. They are pretty good.

The one thing I can't handle is deer hunting. I just hate the thought of
it.

I've also never ate a dove (or a deer, or a squrrel, or a rabbit) but hunting of all of those still
happen around here. The tradition continues because within the lifetimes of people still around
today, not hunting meat meant not eating meat. Except for the animals you raised yourself, that is,
and you couldn't kill a steer or pig every day. Ever see that sorta Big-Brotherish PBS show called
Frontier House? My Grandmother recognizes that majority of the "hardship" stuff they had to do
there as how she lived every day when she was young.

Do a search for "dove" in the newsgroup rec.hunting or
alt.creative-cooking or rec.food.cooking (there are more groups with
recipes) and you will find some references to recipes.

Not to my liking either, but dove is considered by some to be a game
bird.

10 years ago, we had about 40 deer in the back,
5 years ago, we had about 20
3 years ago, we had about 15
2 years ago, we had less then 10
last year we had 5, or less..
and..
all the deer we Did have, all the regulars we used to feed apples
and hay to, have all been hunted and killed by poachers in deer
stands.
It's hard to cover the woods every hour of every day.

And yet the population of deer in general tends to get larger than their environment can easily
support. People wiped out the natural predators that kept the deer population in check before
European colonization, so hunters DO fill a important empty niche, if it is properly regulated
(though I'm not one).

The deer population here in central NC has exploded in recent years. I see
them in people's yards in the middle of the day. I had two walk right in
front of me last week. I was doing about 60 mph at the time. Scared the

In some places, evern nearby, there are a fair amount of deer,
and other places, the herd is thin,
thanks in part to people hunting in other peoples backyards at 3am
with bow/arrow and a flashlight..

And it happens to be true. Like it or not. No wolves= no natural checks to population growth
except for starvation. People killed the wolves, so people are now the wolves.

You can think deer are cute and cuddly as much as you want-- but nature isn't "nice"-- it is "red in
tooth and claw".

He was an idiot. The last time someone I knew hit a deer (accidentally, and it's a common thing
around here) it did about $3000 worth of damage to her car.
