<rant>NBC is doing a less-than-stellar job (understatement
intentional) with their Olympics coverage IMO. Well, maybe not
exactly with their coverage, but with their coordinating the
broadcasting of the events.

Everything is all glommed together for 8, 9 hours at a time on 4 or 5
different networks (NBC, MSNBC etc.) so you I can't record say,
gymnastics or swimming without filling my DVR up with things like
Korean women weightlifters or Montenegro water polo. That means I'm
finding it difficult to find and watch the events that I'm most
interested in. And then they keep bouncing back and forth from event
to event, so even when I DO record something I want to see, I might
have to FF through two hours of a qualifying bicycle race to find a 10
minute snippet of a 400 meter swimming final in which an American
swimmer is favored to get the gold. And I can't watch events live
because different events are being broadcast on several different NBC
affiliated channels at different times with seemingly no rhyme or
reason. It's been very frustrating so far.

For instance, I read online a while ago about an upset in the USA's
women's qualifying gymnastics this morning but haven't yet been able
to find NBC's coverage of that event. GRRRRR.

The other networks have done a much better job in the past of
broadcasting the individual events that are traditionally the most
popular such as swimming, gymnastics and diving rather than burying
them in a mountain of Balkan country playing water polo, Australians
playing beach volleyball and United Arab Emirates in a soccer game
against Great Britain. </rant>

Other networks? Yes, in the very *distant* past.

NBC has had exclusive rights for the Summer Olympic Games in 1988 and the
Winter Games since 2002?

It's been exclusively NBC for the past decade and for the Summer Games
almost a quarter of a century.

They will probably show the women's gymnastics in prime time tonight.

It's a bit like going to a restaurant and having them randomly bring out

games.

Say what, a spoiling with no warning? Oh well, that's cool if it were
that big of a deal I would not be in a thread talking about the
Olympics. I've been watching most of the coverage and as of now they
have not shown any footage about the upset you are posting about.

I've been to a restaurant that did that and I did not care for it.
Here I am saving room for the good stuff that is coming later and then
when the brought that stuff it was not as good as the other stuff I
passed on, oh well.

I could not agree more, NBC should have shown the opening ceremonies
live but not to beat up NBC to badly at least they showed the Men's
Basketball vs. France live today.

I think NBC allows one to watch events *LIVE* as they are happening on
NBCOlympics.com, but once the event is over they won't post the reply of it
until *after* the event is broadcast on NBC (or one of its cable channels).
So you either have to watch it live on nbcolympics.com or wait for the
broadcast of the event.

There's no in-between.

And here's the kicker:

Anyone who has "unplugged" loses all rights in the US to legally watch the Olympics without going somewhere and having the USA nationalistic cheerleading rammed down your throat with a fucking spiked sledgehammer.

To access the live feeds, you have to have a username/password from your cable company, and that cable company has to carry MSNBC and CNBC.

It's effectively pay-for-view.

Bob Costas might be the best we have today.

Still remember that McKay, when alive, was so synonymous with the Games, that NBC actually made an arrangement with ABC so that McKay could come over to NBC to do the Opening Ceremonies. I believe it was Atlanta.

I liked when NBC gave the world feeds to everybody in 2008 in Beijing. Allowed me to watch some sports WITHOUT the incessant cheerleading and disrespect.

By 2010, you needed a cable subscription.

No it wasn't.

One of the most flagrant things I remember was on ABC.

1984. Rowing -- daytime coverage. Forget the event, but the USA was not expected to medal in the final and finished fourth.

The announcer legit goofed and had them finish third.

When they corrected and went back to the studio, the studio host said words to the effect of:

"I liked it better what you said the first time!"

Nationalistic bullshit.

Not really. Pay-for-view has a very specific meaning in relation to TV
viewing. Many boxing and pro wrestling events are pay-for-view since one
pays *extra* beyond their normal cable (or satellite) bill to watch a
special boxing or wrestling event.

NBCOlympics.com is just part of the regular cable package like ESPN, CNBC,
or CNN. A cable or satellite subscriber doesn't doesn't pay *extra* to view it.
