The Idol finale last night was down 44% from the finale in S11. Final adjusted demo
rating was 3.6, a full point behind The Big Bang Theory at 8 PM. There was an
average of 14.3M viewers throughout the 2 hours, far less than the 20M+ in past
years.

Larc, I don't doubt you one iota. And a legend like Frankie Valli appears on
that TV garbage?
I don't get it.

For anybody who might be curious, these are average numbers of viewers for Top 2
performance and results nights combined for each of Idol's season finales.

Season # Total avg. viewers +/- %
1 41.71M -
2 63.73M +52.79
3 53.97M -15.31
4 58.32M +08.06
5 68.16M +16.87
6 56.09M -17.71
7 58.72M +04.69
8 52.66M -10.32
9 44.29M -15.89
10 49.86M +12.58
11 36.33M -27.14
12 26.41M -27.31

So this year was down 61.25% from S5 in 2006, the year Taylor Hicks won. Every
season after that has seen a decrease except S7 (David Cook) and S10 (Scotty
McCreery). This year and last have been drastic.

No link since this is from my own records.

I was gonna point out the big drop the past two season but looking at the
numbers more don't understand how it was figured.

If the 14.3M viewers in the original post is correct for the finale then
the only way to get to the 26.41M average would be if the performance
show on Tuesday had 38.52M viewers.

(14.3 + 38.52) / 2 = 26.41

Clearly the Tuesday show didn't have 38.5M viewers so I don't get the
math?

Also most of the people watching Tuesday would also watch Wed so they
would be double counted(DWTS used to do this which irrated me).

I would be interest in how many million people watched the finale by
season.

I'll use just this year as an example. Average viewers is the number usually
officially cited. It's derived by taking half hour readings, adding them all, and
then dividing by the number of half hour segments. The average for Wednesday night
(performance night) was 12.11M. The average for last night (results night) was
14.31M. The 2 added together come to 26.42M (the total for last night was raised
slightly when TV by the Numbers posted their final numbers after my post here).
That's the way each year is done (avg. for performance night + avg. for results night
= total).

That really is quite a dismal rating average for the finale, isn't it?!
Personally I think it's cause there wasn't any dudes after Lazaro went
out in the #6 spot and no "eye candy". To me a competition show like
this is dullsville without both sexes, even though the girl's voices
might have been stronger. They just lacked in personality and didn't win
over the audience as well as other seasons. I've heard more unfavorable
comments about S12 than any other, so I can see why A.I. is in trouble
and sinking further down into network quicksand!

I just wonder how close the votes were between Candice and Kree last
night, but guess we'll never know. Also Ryan didn't proudly announce how
many millions of votes came in after the last performances, which I kept
waiting for, but maybe it wasn't that impressive either?

Plus the voting system has become a joke anyway. If someone can cast 50
votes instantly online, why should I even bother calling in?

| You may be onto something, Judy. Of all the people who watch the show
| in the coveted 18 -24 year old demographic, how many of them are boys?
| I'd say very few. And by whittling it down to an all girl top 5,
| you're right, there was no "eye candy" for the tweens and teens to get
| excited over. I bet you're exactly right, and that's where the
| viewership drop was.

That kind of logic is much too advanced for FOX and Idol to figure out.

Did anyone take stock of this? Unlike past finales, Ryan did NOT preface the
results by his usual shtick such as," Out of 65,000,000 votes tabulated, the
winner, by the closest margin possible, IS......?" Obviously because he knew
he had just 26 mil watching and by inflating votes, he'd make himself a
bigger liar than he usually is. That's been a major problem for this program
at the outset. It should have been one vote for one person instead of all
this automated bulls### piling up for meatheads.
