Booted 'Idols' Open Up To Access Hollywood

LOS ANGELES (March 11, 2007) -- Earlier in the week Sabrina Sloan,
Sundance Head, Jared Cotter and Antonella Barba were booted off
"American Idol." They sat down with Access Hollywood to talk about
leaving the show, their experiences and what's next.

I think the judges were completely shocked that you guys were gone.
Were you shocked as well?

Sabrina: Definitely. Everybody wanted to be in the top twelve and we
really kind of planned for it and hoped for it, ready to sing with
Diana Ross next week and now.

Sundance: Yeah, that was gonna be good.

Sabrina: We were really looking forward to it so it's heartbreaking.
It happens to everyone at some point.

Dish of Salt: 'Idol' Top 12 Party

What did you say to yourself the night you were booted off 'Idol,'
before you went to sleep?

Sundance: I still haven't taken the time to look back and reflect on
anything. It's happening so fast. A bunch of events popped into my
life. I'm just ready to go home, spend some time with my family, try
to find where I belong I guess.

Would you have liked to have learned sooner yesterday? It must have
been tough for you.

Sundance: Yeah, you are talking about being voted off, correct?

Yes, but also the unfortunate loss of your uncle as well. I know they
held that from you because they thought it might be better
emotionally.

Sundance: I think that they did the right thing by not saying anything
to me. I think that was the right thing to do.

What do you hope to have this platform do for you?

Sabrina: Definitely that people would have seen me on the show. I've
created a fanbase and the right people will be able to get in touch
with me. Stuff I've written and music I'll still work on will get out
there eventually.

After you got booted off you said hey, I need a job. What kind of job
do you want?

Sundance: I just want a job in the industry. I would like to be an
artist but if that can't happen I'd just like to do whatever I can do.
TV, comedy, whatever it is.

Sabrina: He's a comedian.

What does it mean for guys like you who have seen somebody like
Jennifer Hudson not make it, but look what she did?

Sundance: I think anyone can have success after the show if they do it
responsibly, respect the people that they meet along the way. You just
have to be smart about what you do. 'American Idol's' whole thing is
that they try to set success up for everyone that makes it onto the
show. They've got the best team, the best professionals. They know the
most about marketing. It's a wonderful group. It's the best in the
world. I mean they could take anybody and make them into a star.
There's no doubt. No doubt.

Also it probably shows you guys how it can be done.

Sabrina: - Absolutely. Once I got through the disappointment last
night I really did say a prayer of just gratitude for being on the
show for three weeks and having 37 million viewers watch me sing for
three weeks and it's incredible. I love Jennifer Hudson and I am so
happy for her and it is absolutely motivation that even if it takes a
little time this is an awesome, awesome opportunity for so much more.

Antonella Barba and Jared Cotter

I bet you didn't think you would be standing here this morning, did
you?

Jared: Not at all. Not at all. I'm shocked even now.

Antonella: I was fearing the moment and you know you almost know
what's coming. It was scary.

Did you know what was coming, though? You looked a little shocked. Did
you think you were in the top twelve no problem?

Antonella: I expected to be. Of course everyone wants to be and when I
woke up that morning I had a good feeling. I thought I would be. You
can't be nervous about something that is inevitable. Once it is out of
your hands, it's out of your hands. So I wasn't so nervous going into
it until there were only two spots left for the girls and four girls
left and I just had a feeling and at that point, yeah I wasn't so sure
anymore.

It's all about the numbers, right?

Jared: Well with me it was you know I'm 6' 4" and Ryan is like 5'
nothing or whatever he is. I like the guy but he's short. So when I
walked over to him I actually saw over his shoulder and saw the card
so the whole time I was sitting there like mad but it's all right. You
know I saw in big letters it said Jared, you are not in the top
twelve.

How tough is it going to be now? Are you going to watch the show?

Jared - I'll watch because you know we made some good friends but it's
not over. I'm going to stay out here for a few more weeks. There's
definitely a lot of opportunities for the both of us that have been
presented to the people here at 'American Idol' for us. We'll try to
sift through them and see what's best for us.

Obviously the exposure has been great for both of you guys. What kind
of offers are coming in for you?

Antonella: I haven't gotten my offers yet but I'd like to do something
with acting or singing obviously, would be my biggest goal.

Do you think the exposure on 'Idol' and the exposure that the website
brought you with your pictures being out -- does it hurt you or help
you in the long run?

Antonella: Personally it hurt me but I mean as far as my standing in
the competition, I'm not in it anymore. My fans put me through the
first two weeks and I am so thankful for that but at the same time the
competition is about singing and this is outside stuff. It's
irrelevant. It's garbage. It wasn't meant for the public eye. I am
singing to the public and that is something I am intentionally putting
out there but my personal life was not meant for everybody to know
about.

How did you find out?

Antonella: Friends calling me being like 'oh, you're on the internet.'
Check this website, check that website.

What was your reaction?

Antonella: I was just like 'Ah, I don't need to see it.'

Did 'Idol' producers call you in and say what up?

Antonella: Well, they had already known about it because I had told
them about pictures that had been taken that could come out and like
there was no getting in trouble with 'Idol' itself because they knew
about it the whole time. They were working to protect me against it.

When did you hear?

Jared: She actually ran to my room when she first heard it. We're real
good friends so it was really hard to deal with because she is such a
good girl and those are her own private pictures. Nobody, especially
millions of people around the world were supposed to see those
pictures.

You're 6'4", you can go out and help.

Jared: I told her, just let me know who it is because I will kick his
butt.

Last question, do you know who did it and is there any way you can go
after them?

Antonella: I would love to know but at this point I don't really know
how I could track that person down because it is in the hands of so
many people. Who knows where it originated from. All I know is that
personal information has been stolen off of my personal computer and I
have no way of tracing that.
___ end

Interesting to hear Barba's comments re:the photos,
"..they (TPTB) had already known about it because I had told them
about pictures that had been taken that could come out"..

Did she *think* the photos would be "stolen" from her computer and
distributed to the internet? Hmm

.. and "...there was no getting in trouble with 'Idol' itself because
they knew about it the whole time."

Not really passing the smell test there either.

.. and "...personal information has been stolen off of my personal
computer and I have no way of tracing that."

BS - law enforcement regularly traces quote unquote illegally obtained
and posted material. Try again.

"Who knows where it originated from"? Bullshit. Unless she makes a habit
of posing provocatively for strangers, she knows exactly who was on the
other side of the camera.

Not only 'who' took the photos, but unless she stores her skanky
private pics on a public PC, she also knows who accessed her private
computer. Oh, someone who would also have to be close enough to know
Barba's password, and maybe someone like a jealous best friend who
then ends up quoted on national interviews and such. Hm, I wonder if
Antonella knows anyone like that?

Seems like posing for racy pics aren't the only lapses in judgment
this poor chick has had.

And this calls even more into question the attitudes of TPTB. After
all - if you believe Frenchie's side of things - they kicked Frenchie
off after she disclosed the pictures, despite never having seen them.

But they keep Antoilet around, despite being told about them not
having seen them.

Overall, though, her story just doesn't mesh. Either, she

-Had a hand in releasing pictures, but continues to claim victimhood
in order to gain support.
-Never had the pictures in her possession, and knew they could be
released at any time.
-Had two sets of pictures - the racy "fountain" photos which could be
released, and a set of "personal" pictures that were stolen off her
harddrive (and didn't make the distinction clear).

Whatever the case, I'm just glad she's gone, and I don't have to
suffer through her inability to hold a note ever again.

Actually, especially at this point, that would be quite difficult.

In fact, if the fate of the known universe depended on it, it would
probably be easier to do a face-to-face investigation (Ask around
school, or the neighborhood) then do some kind of trace.

Ok...maybe Jack Bauer and Chloe could do it.

The fact is that Frenchie is fat and black and Antonella is white and
lean meat for the music industry to jack off over.

Frenchie was going to call them on the carpet, and that and the
rumored porn offers were enough for TPTB to say "no more".

They threw her off. Had nothing to do with any "vote" for the others
or against Antonella.

I agree - TPTB may have initially welcomed all the free publicity; but
once the ugly ball of racism started rolling towards them, it was time
to get the he||outta Dodge.

Barba *had* to go last week - any further in the contest, and not only
would the 'scandal' have continued to grow, but TPTB would have had to
start facing the music of watching a cute little number like Barba
stick around whilst the butter for their bread was getting voted off.

No way - all you'd have to do is tell a group of pre-pubescent, heck
even 'post', teh haxorz that Barba would thank them "personally" for
the information of who posted the pics, and it'd be done by the next
episode of 'Deep Space Nine'.

I think just being fat was enough, but race still played a small part. If
Antonella weighed 300 pounds, she would have been kicked off.....just not
quite as fast as Frenchie. Maybe she would have stayed 10 minutes longer.

The part about Antonella telling them before about possible pictures coming
out doesn't jive. Every time that someone has remained even though they
have some past indiscretion, the producers tell the media immediately that
they are staying because they were honest in the beginning and told them
about their past. That didn't happen here. We never really were given a
reason. They just said "shame on Antonella's friends". That's not a
reason.

Frenchie went off for an entirely different reason and deserved it,
IMHO, if the allegation was true....namely a fee for porn site.

That's different than SI swimsuit like pics, although involving the WW2
Memorial, merited in IMHO.

However, the degree of the pics and the circumstances, entirely
different.

The only thing missing from Frenchie last week was Al Sharpton.

In the past that explanation was given when someone had either been
arrested or convicted of a crime. In this case, there was nothing
illegal involved, which is why I don't think it was ever completely
addressed.

What people seem to keep forgetting, especially AI, is we are not talking
about casting the show, we are talking about how they deal with the
contestants' past "crimes". These are two separate issues. This season
proves that no one knows what the hell they are thinking when they "cast"
the show. But their rules on past "crimes" have always been clear, with the
possible exception of Corey Clark (you do background checks with a ss# and
dl #, not the spelling of their name). The producers have stated numerous
times that if the contestant is honest up front and tells them about some
past indiscretion or crime, then they get to stay on the show as long as the
audience wants them. When Bo's and Scott's past came up, we were told by
the producers that they were honest about their past before they became a
part of the show. Others who were not honest were let go. When it came out
that Frenchie had topless photos on the net, she was let go. We were told
it was because of the pictures. We weren't told that she didn't tell them
before hand or that they knew about it but reaction from the audience forced
them to let her go or any other excuse. We were only told she was let go
because of the pictures.

So now Antonella comes along with topless photos of her groping another
woman, photos of her drinking while underage, photos of her desecrating a
memorial for our fallen soldiers and possibly her performing oral sex.
Selling topless photos of yourself is not illegal. Drinking under age and
desecrating the WWII Memorial is. But Antonella was kept. Why? What was
the basis for their decision? There can only be one answer, her looks. If
Antonella was a 300 pound woman of any color, she would have been gone. The
producers let their penis make the decision. The closest thing to an
explanation is "shame on her friends". What does it matter who put them out
there? Frenchie didn't go on the show and say "look at my topless photos".
Someone else made them public knowledge. There were so many people involved
in Antonella's photos, there is no way she could possibly think they were
private photos. Any one of those people in the photos or taking the photos
has the right to share them as they wish. So how can AI after investigating
all this, if they even bothered, keep Antonella on the show when they booted
Frenchie for a lesser offense? The answer is in the penis. They made a
weightist decision.

Who would know? Seriously? They aren't given a chance. There is such a
double standard. IMO, if you took Lakisha or Melinda voice, and put it in
the body of that chick that was over weight and wore that gold blouse with
no bra to auditions, she wouldn't have even made it to Hollywood.

Especially since it is the one thing that Idol has always had trouble
getting away from.

(Hey, it's not our fault there's no white talent out there today, it
seems! That's five seasons out of six that a black woman is the best
performer, and this year, it might be three or four deep!)

Exactly. And I do think that, at some point, someone would've taken
it too far.

There were already two rumored such offers on the table for Barba (one
from GGW, a second from a DVD porno site) by the time she was out. I
think _those_ were the last of the final straws.

Of course, in this day and age, is nudity really necessary to make it
porn?

And, again, I don't think the show could've afforded it.

As an aside, and as you are more informed on such things than I, is a
person's weight related to their singing ability? Historically, female
opera singers are obese white women who can put a lot of power behind
their voice, thin women seem to have "thin" voices, while women of
average slightly higher weight seem to have a very rich tone to their
vocals.
There are a few exceptions, but it seems that power singers are heavy
(Aretha, et al), thin singers are bubblegum (Britney, et al), with the
best vocalists falling somewhere in between (Mariah, et al).
Is that primarily due to weight?

Singing is an athletic endeavor. The more athletic the music (e.g.,
Wagner) the fitter the singer must be. Some opera singers do have weight
problems, but many, even most, do not. The problem the heavies have
losing weight is the temporary loss of physical strength that often
accompanies dieting. Trying to sing the most strenuous roles when you
are off your game is tough on the voice, potentially damaging. This is
particularly true for tenors and dramatic sopranos who sing at the
extremes of what the human voice is capable. Under conditions of
sustained weakness, lasting damage can occur and bad vocal habits often
get worse.

Renata Scotto, after she saw herself on a TV broadcast from the Met,
went on a diet and exercise program and lost a huge amount of weight in
a fairly short time. When I met her, she was a very trim and fit women,
though the wobble in her voice had become more pronounced. Maria Callas
also lost a huge amount of weight, arguably with no discernible change
in her voice.

Some singers give the impression of being heftier than the are, like
Birgit Nilsson, who was built like a running back: broad shoulders and
relatively narrow hips. Put a huge blocky head on top of it and she gave
the impression of being a fatty. She wasn't. On the other side of things
are singers like Gianna D'angelo, who was just plain drop dead gorgeous
and looked like she was born to wear the height of Italian fashion,
which she usually did.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I keep thinking of singers
who were anything but fat. Of the big names with whom I've had contact,
the only really fat singer was Pavarotti, and even he wasn't fat when he
started out in the business. The real question is whether someone is
strong and presently healthy at whatever their weight is.

Good vocalism goes with good physical health and a strong body. Good
singing requires a good brain and a generous heart.

I don't believe there has been one. In Britain, Michelle McManus did
win season 2 of PopIdol but her career rapidly faded. She's now, I
think, doing like Kirstie Alley for a weight loss company.

So your experience contradicts the whole "...fat lady sings" thing.

Off the top of my head:

Italian-American lyric (coloratura) soprano. Probably best known
recording was of her as Musetta on the Serafin conducted La Boheme
(London/Decca) recording with Tebaldi, Begonzi, Siepi, and Bastianini.
This was very early stereo and possibly the best opera recording ever
made. (The recording session was staged and the microphones kept at a
respectful distance. The cast from top to bottom is amazing and if you
want to hear how Puccini should be conducted and sung, this is the place.)

Miss D'angelo was a fine singer and musician and one of if not the best
Gilda's of the late 50's and 60's. (An exquisite recording of her in the
role is available.) I believe a injury (back?) curtailed her career.

Must be up to date, because I have no clue who Flicka is. I thought it

Frederica Von Stade, who actually lives here in the Bay area, is also known

Pants roles? Can you elaborate? You can't mean she did a Wrangler

All that would have been more clearly illustrated for our friend
Vandar, if the Opera community got with the times and simply changed
the terminology from the outdated "pants role" to the more
contemporary and apt description of, "Tootsie Role".

Are you with me?
