Do you know if that segment will be reaired and when? I teach in the same town
that this happened in so I am familiar with the case, been by Manzie's and
Werner's house.

I know, that got to me too, the asshole who started this whole event got a
lousy five years. And that idiot judge who refused to commit the Manzie

(I get so confused!) Is Sam Manzie the little boy (oh, about 12 or 13 years
old), whose ears were misshapen? In whatever case had the boy with the
misshapen ears, I seem to remember that the ears possibly reflected some
kind of aberration or mental problem. Am I completely off on this one?

Linda,

That's not the same boy, but I know which one you're talking about. Can't
remember his name tho! He was a redheaded boy right? Didn't look like he
could harm a flea, but he killed a small child, can't remember if it was a
little boy or girl, but I think it was a little boy ... will try to remember
unless someone else can.

Strange ears have been a factor in a few of the school shootings
(shooter Williams in Santee CA, Kip Kinkel). I can't find anything
about mental aberrations related to strange ears, but I do find
references some school shooters being teased about having
big ears.

to remember the name of the boy? I really wish I could remember some of the
details, it wasn't htat long ago so it should be documented online

This red haired boy was only about 11 or 12. He looked younger and totally
cute and harmless, but his facial expression always seemed blank.

I think he killed the little boy by hitting him with a large rock.

No guns or knives were involved. Nor any sexual assault if I remember
correctly.

Hi everybody-- Steph here... I haven't been here in awhile but I came to read
about the Smart case and started reading other stuff, and, well... I did a
little search on "red hair ears killed" in Google and the name Eric Smith
(Killer)/Derek(or Derrick) Robie (Victim) popped out, but I'm not sure it's the
right case... Here are the pertinent excerpts from the pertinent posts-- It's a
trip down memory lane, if nothing else:

In another similar case, CBS 48 Hours last year concentrated on one recentcase
from somewhere here in the U.S. where a boy of ten or so (I can'trecall the
details too well, beyond seeing the flaming red hair andfreckles on this kid)
lured a neighboring little boy into the woods andbeat him, molested him cruelly
(foreign objects, etc. -- as bad or worsethan the JBR stuff), and then killed
him. Very nasty, and all from asweet little boy who had exhibited no violent
tendencies. Before hefinally broke down and confessed weeks later, the town
had searched andsearched for the "real killer" of the little boy....

Eric Smith, now 17, was convicted of murder and sent to prison for nineyears to
life. Attorney Kevin Bradley maintains now he presented a flawedinsanity
defense, denying the troubled teen a fair trial. <SNIP> The jury cast aside
defense arguments that Eric was not criminallyresponsible because he suffered
from ``intermittent explosive disorder,''characterized by uncontrollable
violent impulses. Eric choked the preschooler, stuffed a paper towel and a
plastic lunch bagin his mouth and crushed his skull with a 26-pound rock. He
sodomized thebody with a stick. Psychiatrists agreed he suffers from
developmental abnormalities broughton by his mother's use of a risky
anti-epileptic drug while pregnant. Theydiffered, however, on whether Eric has
a dangerous disorder.

A few years ago there was a case that made the national news. They had pickedup
a kid, no more than ten, for the murder of a classmate. The kid was anaverage,
red headed, freckled face mischievous looking youth. He picked a kidfrom his
school whom he didn't like because the kid was fat. He lured him tothe woods
and beat him to death with either a baseball bat or a log ( I can'tremember
which). When asked why he did it, the boy replied "Because I wanted toknow what
it was like to kill someone."

From: N.A.F. McNelly (nmcn...@bu.edu)
I remember that one very well, as it happened near the town where myparents
live, and commanded a lot of newsprint in the local paper. The child looked tiny
standing between the officers of the court. The most arresting thing for me in
this case was that, needless to say,all manner of psychologists were called in
to find out "what waswrong with him." It was assumed that he must have been
abused orhad some sort of brain dysfunction. They tried hard, but couldn't
find anything that was far enough from the norm to "explain" why he did.
..........................................................................
...............................
From: darkstar (dark...@sky.net)
I respectfully disagree. The redhead kid was the one that had been madefun of
for his red hair and sticking out ears. The six-year-old was theso-called
"perfect" specimen with the advantages the redhead kid envied. We don't need to
look for "something in the water," but into the feelingsand if you want to call
it that, True Reality of the redhead kid. And ifyou want to call it that,
where Our Society failed the redhead kid.
.............................................
From: LITTLEPJoo (littl...@aol.com)
I thought the red haired kid killed a five year old. Correct me if I'm wrong.
..........................................................................
..................
From: MaryHedman (maryh...@aol.com)
Yes, and wasn't the 'official' explanation that the red-haired boy was
teasedfor being 'funny looking' and having ears that stuck out, so he killed
ayounger, 'more attractive' child?
.................................................................
From: Captive964 (capti...@aol.com)
You can respectfully disagree, but you are wrong if we are talking about
thesame case. I KNOW the other kid was fat.
...........................................................................
From: Babyface98 (Babyf...@juno.com)
This must be 2 different stories then, cause I agree with Darkstar. In theone
*I* saw, the red-headed kid had lots of freckles and he woreglasses..he was
teased a lot and he was jealous of this little boy that hekilled because the
little boy was cute and popular. The victim had gone topractice ball in a park
nearby (he walked there alone) that day and thered-headed kid was riding his
bike and told the victim something to get himto follow him into the woods. He
killed the little boy, shoved something upthe little boy's butt (a stick???)
and poured kool-aid on him. When the trail led back to the perp, his parents
willingly took him to thecops for questioning and told him to be
truthful....then the cops chargedhim with murder. The parents were talking
about it on Dateline I believe, and they said they would have *never* told him
to confess it all if theywould have known what the cops had in mind. The
parents thought because theboy was so young he wouldn't be charged with murder.
I can not remember theboy's name...I was trying to find the original story on
it. Anybody elseremember this story???
.......................................................................
From: LITTLEPJoo (littl...@aol.com)
I remember this case but why do I think the kid was younger than him?
Thechilling thing I remember about this case was the way he looked into the
camerawhen some news show did a spot on him.

From: Babyface98 (Babyf...@juno.com)
I think, you, me, and Darkstar *are* talking about a different case thanCaptive
first posted on. The red-headed boy in *our* story was Eric Smithhe was 14 yrs.
old, and his victim was Derek Robie who was 4 yrs. old. Ericended up getting 9
yrs. to life in prison. That's all of the info I couldfind on these 2. Did you

Teen killer's new trial request deniedAssociated Press, 04/02/98 19:24
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A federal judge turned down a request for a new trialfor
convicted teen-age killer Eric Smith after his attorney claimed Smith
wasrepresented by an incompetent lawyer during his trial. In a 35-page decision
released Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge DavidLarimer ruled the appeal from
Smith's new attorney, Felix Lapine, was ``notworthy of attention.'' Smith was
13 when he was arrested in the 1993 slaying of 4-year-old DerrickRobie. Smith
was convicted of second-degree murder and sent to prison for nineyears to life.
Prosecutors charged Smith bashed the preschooler's head with a 26-pound
rockafter luring him into woods near the Robies' home in the village of
Savona, about 63 miles south of Rochester. A jury rejected a claim by Smith's
first defense attorney, Kevin Bradley, thatthe teen was not criminally
responsible because he suffered from ``intermittentexplosive disorder,''
characterized by uncontrollable violent impulses. Bradley sought a new trial on
the basis that he had presented a flawed insanitydefense - an argument rejected
by the trial judge and a state appeals court. Lapine re-argued the same point
last month in front of Larimer, saying Bradleyadmitted in court papers ``he was
totally unfamiliar with the basic frameworkfor an insanity defense and that his
defense was therefore totallyineffective.''

You were talking about his ears, and it reminded me of another post here from
years ago, about physical features of serial killers, and I was able to find
it-- I think I remember it because I'd never heard the term "sampuki eyes"
before. Here's the old post:

From: Yesirree (yesi...@aol.com)
Subject: Re: Signs you are a serial killer
Date: 1997/12/20

I am not sure if you are looking for evidence that is empirical or deductive
then this certainly wont fit. If you are looking for anecdotal type info for
some reason or old wives tales here are some for serial killers: sampuki eyes
low set ears
convulsions in early life
sampuki eyes are eyes that show white on the bottom when the person is looking
straight foward.
Now I am sure there is no truth to these and please dont label someone with low
set ears as a serial killer. It is more likely that they have a genetic kidney
problem. However if you are looking for material for a book or something these
are as I said common "old wives tales" .

I haven't been following this thread - maybe this has nothing to do with
anything. So. There was a case several years ago in a semi-rural area, in
which a mom allowed her precocious 4 y.o. son to walk alone a couple of
blocks to his pre-school (she took huge flak for it afterwards), and it took
him near some woods in which a neighbor lurked. The neighbor boy lured the
little one into the woods and killed him. The killer was 11 or so with red
hair and very fair skin IIRC. For the life of me I can't remember any more
than that. Maybe somebody else can think of a name or location. IF this is
remotely connected to anything you guys are talking about. (Don't recall
nothin bout his ears tho.)

How very interesting (to me, anyway)! When my infant son had projectile
vomiting and the Navy doctor was trying to find any reason for it besides
Pyloric Stenosis (which it was), he asked, "Does anyone else in your family
have low-set ears?" I hadn't noticed that his were low-set, and I still
don't think they are. (I think the doctor was checking for brain damage.)
This same son had febrile convulsions at 18 months (as did his daughter at
the same age, ~28 years later). This fellow wouldn't hurt a fly, much less
be a serial killer; but this description fascinates me!

I don't think I know anybody with "sampuki eyes", but it seems that I heard
long ago that that was an indication of high intelligence...or something.
(For some reason, Steven Segal came to mind as one who might have "sampuki
eyes", but the pix I found weren't clear enough for me to judge.)
