Palo Alto man's body found decomposing in swimming pool

A body found decomposing in a public swimming pool in Redwood City has
been identified as that of a 21-year-old Palo Alto man, authorities said
Saturday.

Gabriel Estrada Contreras' body was found Thursday afternoon at the
Hoover Park city pool by a maintenance worker responding to neighbors'
complaints about a foul smell.

The pool has been closed since July and was covered. Police said
Contreras had been dead for some time, but exactly how long is not known.

The San Mateo County coroner's office has conducted an autopsy to try to
determine a cause of death.

A notice on the city's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Web site
said the pool at 2100 Spring St. was not open for the 2009 season.
Agency officials declined to say Friday why the pool had been closed.

Oh sheesh, yuck. So, you think he committed suicide (didn't know how to
swim) by climbing in under the covering? More likely, seems to me, somebody
put him there to delay discovery as long as possible.

I was going to comment on this one as well. Weird - was it a worker at

I wasn't thinking suicide, I was thinking he was probably drunk
and decided to go for a swim in the covered pool.

Maybe a dare. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that someone
has a video of it.

I wonder if anyone had reported him missing.

Oh. Suppose that could be too. Or drunk and tried to walk across the cover
and it didn't hold his weight, he slid in near the edge?

If he worked there, wouldn't someone have reported him missing and searched
the area? That pool cover. Wonder how well secured it was around the sides.
Some are sturdy enough to be walked on, but most I've seen aren't, seems to
me.
