America loves Pfc. Jessica Lynch.
And Americans seem to love making money by selling memorabilia of the
rescued member of Fort Bliss' 507th Maintenance Company on eBay.
Saturday evening, the Internet auction site listed at least 10 Jessica
Lynch items, ranging from an oil painting with an opening bid of $200
to a $5 "America Loves Jessica Lynch" refrigerator magnet.
Who knows where the money will go after the auctions end.
The person selling the original oil painting (and $10 prints for
lesser budgets) states on the auction page: "I plan on taking the
money from this auction and go to the grocery store and buy up a
couple of hundred dollars worth of groceries and ship it over there to
Jessica's buddies."
The seller of the magnet writes, "All money made on this item, over
costs of making, will be used to supply postage ... for shipping items
and care packages to our troops!"
A seller of a Jessica Lynch commemorative coin, going for about $20
Saturday night, makes no mention of where the money will go.
The war's villains also are generating a flurry of interest on eBay.
"Ace of Spades" Saddam Hussein and other Iraqi regime leaders captured
on a deck of cards for U.S. troops are going fast.
Packs said to be genuinely from the front lines were bid up to $300 to
$400 Saturday night.
"My cousin shipped me a case of these right from the supply tents,"
one seller writes.
But for only $1.99, one eBayer will sell the Web site address at which
the electronic images of the cards can be downloaded.
"Either you can go out, spend the time and find it yourself, or I can
save you the hassle and e-mail it to you," the Web-address
representative writes.
Yeah, right. The Army would discard such a
package from a stranger....rightly so.
