WASHINGTON (AP) - The commandant of the Marine Corps said Thursday he
has counseled a senior subordinate for saying publicly, "It's fun to
shoot some people."
Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis, an infantry officer who has commanded Marines
in both Afghanistan and Iraq, made the comments Tuesday while speaking
to a forum in San Diego about strategies for the war on terror. Mattis
is the commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command
in Quantico, Va.
According to an audio recording of Mattis' remarks, he said, "Actually,
it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. ... It's
fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like
brawling."
He added, "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around
for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You
know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of
a lot of fun to shoot them."
Thursday, Gen. Mike Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a
statement saying, "I have counseled him concerning his remarks and he
agrees he should have chosen his words more carefully."
"While I understand that some people may take issue with the comments
made by him, I also know he intended to reflect the unfortunate and
harsh realities of war," Hagee said. "Lt. Gen. Mattis often speaks with
a great deal of candor."
Hagee also praised Mattis, calling him "one of this country's bravest
and most experienced military leaders."
He said the commitment of Marines "helps to provide us the fortitude to
take the lives of those who oppress others or threaten this nation's
security. This is not something we relish, yet we accept it as a reality
in our profession of arms."
He said he was confident Mattis would continue to serve.
According to Mattis' biography, he commanded, as a lieutenant colonel,
an assault battalion during the first war with Iraq. During the war in
Afghanistan, he commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade; in the
second war in Iraq, he commanded the 1st Marine Division during the
invasion and early period after the war.

You know, I think he's right. Some of those people would be fun to shoot.

LMAO. I usually don't respond to Chas Nutmo, but I've been waiting
for this one.
The fact is that if you are in the military, but more likely Army and
MArines, you are trained to kill. YOu are encouraged to kill, but
more importantly you are desensitized to killing. It's a necessary
evil. One I agree with. It would be tough to defend a nation if
everyone became a basket case when they had to kill the enemy.
In addition to that, and you will only truly understand this if you
HAVE had to take a human life, it is fun to some degree. Depending on
the situation it can be like a team win when you bag a hostile. There
is also a certain euphoria that comes over you after the kill. There
is a feeling of power. Now, not all killing makes you feel this way.
Not all people will react the same, but if you are properly trained
and you have killed someone who is trying to kill you or your fellow
soldiers, then yes, killing can be fun.

Actually I think it is the stupidity of the average citizen that
causes this problem. If you want a military to stand up and do your
fighting for you, then don't cry when they start doing it well and
being proud of it. You obviously don't know Marines well Alan.
You know what the difference between a Marine Aviator and God is? God

Scorp - but in this case look at who the General was talking about. The
"nearmen" in Afghanistan who took pleasure in beating, torturing, and
murdering women and little children. I must say that I can say that it would
be a pleasure for me too to exterminate that breed of vermin. Unless you
think that the Taliban were nice guys of course. If you think taking
pleasure ion beating women is a good thing, then I suppose you can angrily
resent the General's position.
