Is Insane Clown Posse to blame?
By Hillary Rhodes, Editor
Last night at the "Kids in Crisis" Town Hall meeting, a group of seven or
eight teenagers who are ICP (Insane Clown Posse) fans spoke about how their
group has a bond that is similar to that of Christian youth groups. They
said violent lyrics in the songs they listen to do not promote violent
actions in real life. They said they would be willing to die for each other
and that their ICP friends are like brothers and sisters to them.
Other people are uncomfortable by this and find many of the lyrics
disturbing. Considering the Adrianne Reynolds tragedy, people have been
discussing just how much of an influence ICP has on teenagers.
If you're not familiar with the kind of lyrics that have come into
question, you can read excerpts from some ICP albums below. Then express
your opinion in the comment box below.
1) Carnival of Carnage: "Night of the Axe"
Chopping throats with a hatchet
Cuz they try to get me
So I took a head with me
Ran down the hall butt-naked
If you gotta life I'm a take, huh
2) The Amazing Jeckel Brothers: "I Stab People"
I order food just to stab the guy when he gets there,
I don't care
I stab anybody anywhere (uh, uh) there
I stabbed the mailman, he was pissed, he tried to mace me
3) The Great Milenko: "Halls Of Illusion"
But it's all good here, come have a beer
I'll break the top off it and shove it in ya ear
And your death comes wicked painful and slow
4) Riddle Box: "Cemetary"
Girl that make me happy, a girl that make me cry
A girl that passed away back in 1985
A girl I plan to marry, a girl I plan to wed
A girl that I can choke because my baby is already dead
5) The Ringmaster: "Murder go Round"
What can I say, man, I hit him with the brick
Killed the little prick, him and his chick
6) The Wraith: Shangri-La: "The Raven's Mirror"
We be doing murder every day,
we be good enough to get away,
you won't even know a wicked clown has hit they door,
until your melon hit thy floor and roll away

No.
Yes, the lyrics are nasty, *but*...rough lyrics have been a part of
popular music of any genre since, well, time immemorial. I'm thinking
of various old medieval ballads, a lot of popular American songs from
the beginning*, heck, even the Bible talks about awful things. Look at
old blues songs, old country songs, whatever--it's a part of human
nature and, thus, has always been a part of popular culture.
What it all comes down to is that, yes, *plenty* of people listen to
music, read books, check out artwork, etc. etc. etc., BUT...99.9% of
people are smart enough to know that just because they see/hear/read
about something doesn't mean it's a good idea to actually *do* it; and
if you've raised your children even halfway decently, they *know* that.
(Not to say it's always parents' faults when kids go bad--we've all
heard of cases of children going through horrific mistreatment who
turned out perfectly fine, and others who seemed to have everything
going for them who didn't. There's no one reason why anyone goes bad;
IMNSHO it's a matter of various interlinked factors that vary for each
individual.) It's all too simple to say "well, that song or that band
made them go bad", but things were going wrong way before that--touching
a match to a powder keg will make it go *BOOM*, but that keg had to have
been filled first for that to happen. I could go on and on, but you get
my point...

eh?)
*For example, hop on over to throwingmusic.com and pick up Kristin
Hersh's cover album of Appalachian ballads, _Murder, Misery and
Goodnight_; these are all songs collected from about the last 150 years
or so of traditional ballads, and which her own mother used to sing to
her when she was young; in turn, her own kids love them, and having met
all of her sons so far, they seem to be turning out to be totally
terrific boys and young men, the likes of which any parents would be
proud to claim. Gotta give props to Kristin and Billy for raising their
kids right... :-)
I am happy to be an American. Nowhere else could a Jew with a giant
nose engage in tongue play with an African American with a fabulous
tush after winning an Academy Award on live television for playing a
Holocaust survivor and not have someone declare a holy war against us.
How about Kinky the Clown and the other SM clowns?

>Bad musicians + venal pop music industry + stupid teenagers = ?
To quote The Talking Heads (who as far as I know have not been blamed
for any murders): "Same as it ever was."
Music can help influence unbalanced people to kill. Religion can help
influence unbalanced people to kill. Pornography can help influence
unbalanced people to kill. Books, tv series, and movies can help
influence unbalanced people to kill. What the neighbour's dog said to
them on the way to work this morning can help influence unbalanced
people to kill.
I'm seeing a pattern here, but it ain't nu-metal.
