Over in China, 27 year old Chan Ka-chun, convicted last week of serially
killing three nightclub "hostesses", & plotting to kill a 4th, has been
sentenced to Life in prison with no chance for parole. Bummer! But at least he
did avoid the death penalty. Below are FOUR different articles on this
intriguing case, that provide some very interesting info on the court
proceedings and on Chan's killings. He did have a partner who participated in
some, maybe even all, of the 3 killings, but Chan definately appears to have
been the primary plotter and executor of the kidnap-killings.
All three women that he slaughtered were young and beautiful, at least by
Chinese standards. You can view three different photos, showing all three gals
that wound up being slaughtered, by pointing your web browser to:

In court yesterday, a Life prison sentence was indeed imposed. Chan and his
lawyer continue to claim innocence with regard to all 3 killings. Chan was also
found guilty of raping the 4th gal, TWICE, but spared her life. He befriended
this 29 year old gal, lured her to the island home where he lived, then
repeatedly raped her and told her she was going to be ENTOMBED in his home-made
COFFIN. But she somehow managed to convince him to let her go back to her own
home. She promptly called police, and that led to Chan's arrest and the
subsequent discovery that he had serially killed three gals. Stupid move on his
part, to let victim #4 LEAVE his residence alive, AFTER having RAPED her &
expressed his intentions to entomb/kill her. She also privided pivotal
testimony against Chan during the trial. If only he had made the WISE choice
and made this 29 year old gal his fourth fatal victim, he probably would still
be free and claiming more victims.
In explaining why he chose to spare his fourth victims life, Chan apparently
told cops that she had brought her baby with her, and he was "moved by her love
for her baby."
A 29 year old male accomplice was found guilty of participating in 2 of the
3 murders, and also given a Life sentence. A THIRD man was also involved, to a
minor degree. But our 27 year old Chan does appear to be the primary killer in
all three cases. All three victims were in their 20's. Two were suffocated to
death with pillows, the third, who fought back more strongly, was stabbed to
death. The first body was found floating in a river in 1997, but the other two
remained undiscovered until AFTER Chan's arrest, when he led police to the
bodies. Another BAD move on his part. Hard to claim innocence AFTER you lead
police to two dead bodies.
Take care, JOE

'Innocent' serial killer put away for three life terms
CHARLOTTE PARSONS
A serial killer guilty of "unimaginable" crimes was still protesting his
innocence as a judge passed three life sentences on him yesterday.
Chan Ka-chun, 27, had been found guilty of murdering three hostesses and
plotting the killing of a fourth woman.
"He still maintains his innocence in these offences," defence barrister Niall
Stirling told the Court of First Instance. "I urge Your Lordship to be as
merciful as one can."
Mr Justice Michael Burrell branded Chan a "cold-blooded" killer who had
committed "unimaginable" offences.
On top of the life sentences for the murders, Chan was given 26 years for twice
raping the victim who survived, plotting to murder her and conspiracy to rob
the four women.
His accomplice, Chan Ki-nang, 29, had denied murdering two hostesses but was
given two life sentences.
Defence barrister Michael Poll said Chan Ki-nang was merely a weak pawn in
mastermind Chan Ka-chun's malevolent game.
"Chan Ki-nang did his best to persuade Ka-chun it wasn't necessary that the
victims be killed, but Ka-chun insisted it had to happen and it did," Mr Poll
said.
Leung Sze-lai, 23, was sentenced to 12 years in jail after pleading guilty to
raping the surviving victim three times and plotting to rob her. He also
admitted the manslaughter of one of the hostesses.
His barrister, Paul Dinan, said Leung was raised by babysitters and was the
victim of a wretched childhood characterised by bullying and sexual abuse.
"He harboured deep-rooted hatred for his parents and attributed his unhappy
childhood to the mother who deserted him," Mr Dinan said.
Leung's sentence represented a 50 per cent reduction, in recognition of the
evidence he had provided in another important case and his willingness to
testify against his co-accused, although he was not called.
The victim who survived, a masseuse, 29, was pivotal in securing the
convictions.
Chan Ka-chun had telephoned her often and she believed him to be her friend.
He lured her to Cheung Chau on January 21, 1997. But when they reached the
island he imprisoned and raped her and pledged to entomb her in a home-made
coffin.
The killer later relented and escorted her to the ferry. Her report of the
crime led police to the two Chans and Leung.
The first two victims, Cheung Wah-mei, 29, and Tam Ngan-hang, 23, were
suffocated with a pillow. The third, Yu Wai-man, 24, resisted more strongly and
was stabbed.
Tam's corpse was found floating in a bag at Chi Ma Wan in August 1996.
The other two bodies were recovered in March 1997 when Chan Ka-chun led police
to them after his arrest.

Eerie message in identity-card number
An eerily prophetic message is contained in Chan Ki-nang's identity card. The
number four - which in Cantonese is pronounced the same as the word "die" -
appears four times in a row. That number will now be entered into prison files.
Chan Ki-nang and Chan Ka-chun had formed an extremely rare team, according to
psychiatrist Barry Connell. "Individually, you may be talking about sexual
psychopaths, but the collaborative element is very unusual."
Cases of multiple murders often involve a lone killer with a very limited range
of emotions.

Judge hails triple-murder case heroine
CHARLOTTE PARSONS
The 29-year-old masseuse at the centre of the multiple murder case yesterday
received a court commendation for the harrowing testimony that helped put the
two killers in jail for life.
Mr Justice Burrell ordered that she receive recognition "for her courage and
resolve, not only at the time of her ordeal, but in reliving it when giving
evidence, which was of the utmost importance".
During the trial, the witness told how she had listened helplessly as her
captors argued over whether to kill her. She had been raped repeatedly and
shown a home-made coffin intended for her.
Triple murderer Chan Ka-chun vowed to kill her and entomb her in it. But he
changed his mind and instead escorted her from the makeshift jail on Cheung
Chau.
He told police he had intended to murder her, but was moved by his victim's
love for her baby.
The freed woman launched the police probe that unveiled Chan Ka-chun's three
murders.
The victim took officers to the Cheung Chau bungalow. Monitoring of a pager
number used to rent the home led police to Leung Sze-lai's flat. It was there
they found an address book containing Chan Ka-chun's number.
When he was arrested, he was said to have admitted his crimes and implicated
Chan Ki-nang.
The reduced sentence Leung received yesterday reflected in part the crucial
evidence he supplied against a triad who plotted the ritual murder of ICAC
witness Tommy Chui To-yan in Singapore in 1995.
A letter to the court from the Legal Department said "without his testimony, a
conviction might not have resulted".

Alleged killer 'saved woman'
CHARLOTTE PARSONS
An alleged serial killer told a court yesterday he had saved and comforted a
frightened woman another man intended to murder.
While still with the victim, Chan Ka-chun said, he had also tried to check on
an elderly wheelchair-bound woman he knew.
Chan, 27, has denied twice raping a masseuse and plotting her murder.
He also denies murdering and plotting to rob three hostesses.
The loanshark claimed he saved the masseuse after a homicidal acquaintance
raped her in a Cheung Chau holiday home in January last year.
"Leung Sze-lai said he was going to kill the girl because he was afraid she
would go to the police," Chan said. "I said the girl will not go to the police.
Let her go."
The alleged murderer said he then tried to calm the 29-year-old victim.
The loanshark said he then accompanied the masseuse to the ferry.
On the way, he said, he tried to pay a friendly visit to an elderly,
wheelchair-bound woman who lived on the island, but she was not in.
Chan is accused of holding the masseuse captive, raping her, showing her a
home-made coffin and vowing to kill her.
He claims the woman accompanied him to Cheung Chau, believing she was to spend
two nights with Leung for a fee of $3,000 which would be used towards a
$110,000 debt she owed Chan.
"I thought Leung Sze-lai was only summoning a whore," Chan said. "However, he
said he had raped and robbed her."
The loanshark claims Leung threatened to blame him for the crimes.
Sharing the dock with Chan is Chan Ki-nang, 29, who denies murdering two women
- Cheung Wah-mei, 29, and Tam Ngan-hang, 23. Chan Ki-nang has also pleaded not
guilty to conspiring to rob them.
Leung, 23, has pleaded guilty to raping the masseuse three times and plotting
to rob her.
He also admits the manslaughter of Yu Wai-man, 24, and conspiring to rob her.
He will be sentenced after the trial.
The case before Mr Justice Michael Burrell continues.
