She told them boy was dead

Crystal ball fails psychic in Mo. kidnap

BY CHRISTINA BOYLE
DAILY NEWS WRITER

Sylvia Browne
Montel Williams' psychic pal Sylvia Browne told the family of missing
Shawn Hornbeck he was dead shortly after the Missouri boy vanished - and
later allegedly offered to help locate his body for $700 per half hour.

The popular TV clairvoyant appeared on the "Montel Williams Show" in
February 2003, four months after Shawn disappeared, and told Pam and
Craig Akers she believed their son was "no longer with us."

She also advised that his body could be found in a wooded area 20 miles
from their Richwoods, Mo., home, near two large jagged boulders.

Shawn, now 15, was found alive and well last Friday, living just miles
away with a man now charged with snatching the boy when he was 11.

Browne's "vision" of his death caused search teams to redirect their
efforts and drew dozens of calls from the public who believed they lived
near the woods matching Browne's descriptions.

The family also claims the psychic then tried to cash in, which Browne
vigorously denies.

"She called Pam and Craig about one month after the show and pretty much
offered her services to continue their discussion for a fee," said Wayne
Evans, a spokesman for the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation.

"Pam was that desperate that if she had had $700 in her bank account she
would have put it on the table. We are talking about a mother who would
have sold her soul to have her boy back."

"Everybody was angry," he added. "Sylvia Browne's name was never brought
up again until Shawn was found. He's home now, and that's all that
matters."

Browne, a regular guest on the "Montel" show, apologized for her misfire,
exposed first by StopSylviaBrowne.com, a blog dedicated to tracking the
psychic's every blunder.

"I'm terribly sorry that this happened," she told the Daily News. "But I
think my body of work stands by itself. I've broken case after case."

"I think it's just cruel to jump on this one case in which I was wrong,"
she added defensively. "I've said thousands of times I'm not God."

She also denied ever offering her services to Shawn's family for cash.

"There's never been a case that I've ever charged for a missing child,"
Browne said. "I would never do that. Never, never."

A spokeswoman for Williams said the talk show host was taping more shows
and unavailable for comment. Browne was his only guest on yesterday's
show.

Michael Devlin, the 300-pound pizza parlor manager charged with
kidnapping Shawn four years ago and a second boy just last week, is to be
arraigned today in Missouri courtroom.

He is also under investigation for the disappearance of another boy,
Charles Arlin Henderson, 16 years ago.

They just played a clip on Stern of another Browne faux pas. It went
something like this. (Don't bet this is an exact quote. They were
making so much fun of it, I might have remembered some of their words as
some that actually DID happen. The gist of it was, Sylvia was entirely
off on the cause of death but she didn't back down an inch.) :

<audience member> I feel so horrible. They never found my fiance. I
can't get over it. I don't know what to do.

<Browne> He wasn't found because he's in water. You need to look in
water.

<audience member> ::pause:: Uh, no. He died on 9/11. In the WTC. He
was a fireman.

<Browne> ::not missing a beat:: I'm getting water. Could it be
something to do with the fire hoses?

I'm quite sure this woman BELIEVES she's psychic. I'm thinking that
classifies her as crazy rather than mean.

Maybe its the stupid search and rescue operation who chose to believe in a
psychic thats the problem here. Not the crazy woman who believes she can
speak to dead people.

Anothe article that mentions Sylvia Browne (I found it when searching for
the missing boy/dead story. You have to scroll down to the second to last
paragraph to see it.

"Noted psychic Sylvia Browne, who months ago brashly promised on the Larry
King show that she would indeed take the Million Dollar Challenge, has
since avoided Randi's calls and has yet to be heard from."

Brown is a fraud. Don't forget the Sago Mine disaster last year.
That's the incident where it was erroneously reported that all 12
miners were found alive, then it turned out that all of them were dead
except one. Brown was on the air on George Noory's program when that
all happened, and was trapped by first saying that she knew all along
that that the miners would be found, then totally flipped-flopped right
there on the spot when word got out that they were found dead, and said
that she knew all along that they were dead and that's what she meant
to say the first time. A total fraud.

James Randi proved her a fraud long ago. I don't know why people continue to
put stock in anything she says.

I do believe some people have an "ability" - Edgar Cayce, for one. Browne,
however, is a charlatan.

At this point, she needs to say she has obviously lost all her psychic
powers and announce her retirement. In a year or so, she can pretend they
all came back, come out of retirement and pick up her "career" where she
left off.

Trust me, it will work.

She could even make a fortune on a book about her journey back to

It's just that it isn't often that charlatans are so squarely nailed
with no wiggle room, no matter how much they try. She should be

I used to like Montel Williams but every time I see a commercial for his

I'm convinced we ALL have abilities far beyond our comprehension.
It's rare for a humanoid to recognize and utilize these powers.
Most of us can't even get a grip on our bad habits.
It takes vision that burns through vanity and greed and lust.

I see a woman in Texas that resembles a syphilitic walrus. Her joy for
life has been taken from her by anger and a charlatan pop singer. I
predict she is on a downhill slide into a Hell of her own design.

She gives psychics a bad name. You can tell she makes shit up because
she licks her lips all the time - a sign of lying. I have always
thought she's full of shit.

I like John Edward though. That guy is incredible. I have read all of
his books.

The woman is a fraud, a ghoul, a fiendish con artist who preys upon the weak and
vulnerable in their most desperate of hours. She's a charlatan and a sinister
old bitch.

So I'll be keeping her on -my- "I like her list", thank you very much. ;-)

yeah, I do. I was a Sylvia Browne fan.

But, I am skeptic on almost everything in my life. I believe in science
and facts and will always argue vaguity. But, I liked Sylvia Browne for
some dumb reason. She was almost an exception and I was surprised with
myself that I gave her exception. I almost thought I wanted to buy one
of her books or see her on stage. I almost thought that psychics
weren't fake, because of her.

I'm glad this case proved her true light. I no longer like her. I will
hate to hear her give out her psychic information to the audience on
Montel, if I see her. She speaks as if she knows facts and people
believe her and either cry for sadness or happiness. I hate her for
doing that now.

I think it is all about the money. She has made her millions. Why
will she not just go away! I think she pulls her crap out of the air.
I don't think she is very accurate at all. When she does a reading for
people on the MW show, so many of the times the people either get such
general information that any one of us could have done the same
thing...or the people look totally bewildered. They never have a
chance to counter her claims on the air.

On some level she knows she's a fraud. That's why she avods the million

She's obviously very afraid to be confronted with the truth.

Yeah, she knows it all the way from her surface to her core. Everything about
her screams con-artist, and all con-artists know what they are - not even just
"deep down", but on ALL levels.

> She's obviously very afraid to be confronted with the truth.

No, she's obviously very reluctant to have her -fans- realize the truth. She's
got a cash cow in the U.S. new age market and she's milking it for every penny
she can get. I can't believe anyone can look at her and think she doesn't
-know- that she's a fake. She's got a flowery tongue, she can make people feel
warm and fuzzy and she can portray herself as a genuine, kind and caring person.
She isn't. She's a bitch, and I have -so- much more reason than just my gut
instinct for saying this. At one point, I almost carried off a con just like
what she's doing, I know exactly how it works, and she's doing that exact same
thing, and you -can't- do that kind of con job without knowing exactly what
you're doing.

I guess like an anti-smoker who's kicked the habit, I just _loathe_ people like
her who can't just grow up and rely on her own strength to make an honest
living. Going about it the way she is - that's a very lazy way to make one's
way through life. It's so very easy to do if you're the kind who is not
bothered by taking advantage of other people. Easy. EASY. People are sheep
who want to be led, it is EASY to tell them what they want to hear and EASY to
get them to give you all kinds of support and money. You just have to not give
a shit that you're a worthless piece of crap who deserves nothing less than
death and that those you're taking advantage of are a cajillion times more
deserving of the good life than you ever could be. You have to be "okay" with
being a liar and a hypocrite, and that kind of person just sits SO very wrong
with me.

Sylvia Browne is a heartless bitch, and I'll be quite thoroughly delighted if I
live long enough to read her obituary.

I dunno, I doubt it. They've been together since he's been on (as they
constantly remind everyone). If he admits she's a fraud, he's one too.

Why does Montel Williams continue to have her appear? I believe Montel
to be a pretty good guy and excellent with his guests (esp. those who
have suffered/recovered from horrible situations). Is he the only host
that has a "psychic" on regularly? Isn't he afraid this might ruin his
credibility?

I've noticed he's not bad at guessing demographic-related

South Park did a wonderful episode on him. That being said, I always
enjoyed watching him because he had a likeable persona, even though I

Read all about Edward the fake here:

http://www.csicop.org/si/2001-11/i-files.html

Be that as it may, on Dateline Edward was actually caught in an attempt to
pass off previously gained knowledge as spirit revelation. During the
session he said of the spirits, "They're telling me to acknowledge
Anthony," and when the cameraman signaled that was his name, Edward seemed
surprised, asking "That's you? Really?" He further queried: "Had you not
seen Dad before he passed? Had you either been away or been distanced?"
Later, playing the taped segment for me, Dateline reporter John Hockenberry
challenged me with Edward's apparent hit: "He got Anthony. That's pretty
good." I agreed but added, "We've seen mediums who mill about before
sessions and greet people and chat with them and pick up things."

Indeed, it turned out that that is just what Edward had done. Hours before
the group reading, Tony had been the cameraman on another Edward shoot
(recording him at his hobby, ballroom dancing). Significantly, the two men
had chatted and Edward had obtained useful bits of information that he
afterward pretended had come from the spirits.

He's not a charlatin. He genuinely believes that if you claim to have
any ability, or have had any experience whatsoever that doesn't fit in
with the way he thinks the world works, you are either a fool or a
lying fraud and you need to be publicly debunked ASAP, regardless of
whether your experience was legitimate or not. In his own way, James
Randi is every bit as bad as people who automatically believe every
crackpot claim that comes down the pike. Both sides are made up of
closed minded, bullheaded people who can only look at life in a very
limited, one sided way. If there is any truth to psychic ability, UFOs,
premonitions and all these other "borderline experiences," James Randi
is not going to find it. Especially if it's there. Not that I would be
in a big hurry to trust the claims of one of Uri Gellars pals from the
spoonbender crowd, either, but it's really too bad that there's so
little middle ground when it comes to this stuff. What really annoys me
about the Randi /Susan Blackmore crowd is that they refer to themselves
as "Skeptics," which sounds reasonable and implies that if they were
shown evidence of this or that, they might be willing to change their
mind, when in fact there is no evidence that could be shown to them
that would ever make them change their mind. There's a great quote in
'Einsteins Space and Van Goghs Sky' (A book I cannot currently locate,
although it's around here someplace) from a scientist in the 1800s
announcing that he has closed his mind in advance and no evidence could
ever make him change it. That's where James Randi, Susan Blackmore and
the rest of the "skeptics" are, whether they feel like admitting it or
not.

No. He believes that, if you claim to be able to do something, you
should be able to *demonstrate* that you can do what you claim.

So far, nobody has passed even the most cursory examination of
their claims.

I think Randi is a great man. People like Sly Stallone's mother and
the other fakers are doing a lot of harm to people. I took a course in
Parapsychology some years ago. I had predicted a man's death after
shaking hands with him and it came true a few months later. I have
also seen an apparition once when I was with several friends. So I
thought that maybe I had ESP.

Sadly, the instructors gave us all many tests to determine whether we
did or not, and no one in the class scored higher than something that
could be attributed to just guessing the answers.

They ran the Black miss Cleo out of business quickly. So if there is
no White Affirmative action, or special privilege involved, then I
think it is time to shut down all of these White fakers as well
before they do any more harm to people.
