Check,

"> So what is it with you anyway? When Tardwin isn't around you act pretty
> decent."

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing about you!

What I said was true. The three of you <rarely> are helpful and you are a
self-admitted t r o l l. With the exception of Shiden_Kai, who aside from
the unecessary rotor turning, has some really great information (I
understand his hands are tied in the rotor issue, he answers to the service
manager and has to do what he is told, regardless of proper procedure).

The majority of <your> posts are personal attacks and/or just horsing
around. So, while you may be nice to have around for entertainment value,
your practicality is non-existant. Listen, we have reached an agreement,
you and I, so let's not start up again k?

">but as soon as he comes back and posts an *unprovoked* article
> aimed at three of us, you go back to asshole mode too?"

With regard to the *unprovoked* article, what exactly are you smoking?
Unprovoked? The three of you have been up Dean's ass for months, and
contradict everything he says just to piss him off. Shiden has gone to
great lengths to "investigate" Dean's private affairs, which are NONE of his
business and post them on THIS newsgroup. The three of you are ALWAYS
asking Dean for answers regarding his employment, whether he is a mechanic
or a consultant. So, he finally provides a detailed explanation in regard
to all the attacks, and you call it unprovoked? You all asked him for the
answer to your questions, he gives one, then you crap on him for doing so?

Dean has helped me with many things during the restoration process, and has
NEVER been wrong. His advice is always PERFECT, not "close enough", not
"hmmm, well that helps a little", it's always right on the money.

"> If that's the way
> you want to be, I have no problem with that, but I kinda wonder why you
> have to act so phony..."

The only phoney here is yourself. When you're not trying so hard to be a
goofball, you're a pretty decent fellow. Have you thought about hanging up
the old troll suit and just being yourself?

I defend my friends. Simple as that. Dean is my friend. If you leave my
friends alone I'll leave you alone. If you keep harassing my friends I'll
keep harassing you.

We're all sick of this crap Check. Why not give the t r o l l i n g a
break? If you leave us alone, we'll leave you alone. The worst thing that
has happened in this group over the past 6 months is YOU.

Doc, nothing that I've done to Dean has been unprovoked. Nor anything
that Bob has done as far as I can remember. Dean can't leave well enough
alone, he has to be right about everything, he can't admit that some of what
he believes while making good sense to him...is not necessarily good
sense for everyone else. When he starts saying that I'm a thief and
dishonest......then (to quote someone I heard on here once) "I'll spend
the time and make him step in his own bullshit". I never cared a
bit where he worked or what he did until he started claiming that
I'm a fraud and I don't work at dealership and then trying to get
me to tell him where I work. Is he crazy? Probably, which
is why I wouldn't tell him a thing.......folks on the internet are
totally unpredictable and who knows what someone can do
with the info available. Look at his info....splashed all over
the internet, freely available to anyone who goes to google
and types in his name. Took me all of 20 minutes to find
everything I've posted here. Why doesn't he go after you?
You obviously don't post with your real name or any
address that ties you to anyone or place?! In my books
you are smart.

I frankly don't even care what he or even you think about
dealerships. I probably agree with most of what you say
more then you will know. The rotor turning issue is one
such issue. I don't happen to believe that turning rotors
is necessarily an essential part of a brake job, but in
a business environment such as the one that I'm in, it
would be asking for trouble to not do this as a part of
your brake job. You might not understand that, but
come spend time working with me or someone like
Bob who owns his own business...and deal with the
idiot customers and you would change your tune.

Being a do-it-yourselfer style technician is a totally
different world then being a full time technician
dealing with flat rate, warranty, and all the issues
that come along with the trade. My interest is to
perhaps help the folks who don't have access to the
same type of info and specific experience that I'm
privy to. That's all.

Believe me, when some asshole starts to accuse
me of being a thief and dishonest......I'll spend the
time to make him eat his words. A guy like Dean
won't really care anyway.....he's just concerned
that he keeps his place of a honor at the top of
the heap in this little world we call usenet.

By the way, if you kept tabs on some of the other
auto groups......Dean regularly gets into it with
all sorts of other quite knowledgable folks, be
they techs or non-techs....he just can't resist calling
them liers and bullshitters. Of course he is almost
always wrong.

I'm glad you've gotten good advice from him. He
is quite knowledgable. Now if he could just stop
being such an asshole (grin)

Shiden kai says

And Dean says

> The contempt you show for the people who put bread on your table is

This little exchange made me stop and think, Are any of my customers idiots? I
don't think so.
I took a phone call from a man today, who's twelve year old truck was dripping
coolant from the tail pipe. He tells me, he knows he has a cracked head, but
the truck was overheating for a few months before the drip started. He read on
a newsgroup about a sensor that could make his engine overheat. His real
question, was could I tell him what the sensor was and where it was at, was . I
wouldn't call him and idiot. Would you? I certainly wouldn't call him a
customer.

Another customer was about 50 miles out of town when his low coolant lamp came
on. He stopped and bought a gallon of coolant and poured it in. The lamp came
on again, so he bought second gallon and pour it in too. The engine locked up a
few miles later. When the car was towed in, he had a split heater hose and 2
gallons of coolant in the oil pan. The crankshaft had to be replaced. He might
be an idiot, but only because he bought the green coolant instead of the orange
kind.

One of my oldest living customers (yes, i do have a few dead customers) is
worried that her daytime running lamps don't work. She checks them in the
driveway and never sees them on. I have told her many times that the
transmission must be in drive for DRL to come on, I expect to read in the
newspaper that she was killed in a freak accident when was run over by her own
car.
I suppose shiden kai has all the idiot customers. That is why they never show
up my shop or where ever it is that Dean works.

None of your examples are what I would term idiot customers either.
The one's I'm referring to are the ones that are interested in scamming
your business. I'm sure that you've run into a few of those. After a
while you learn how to filter those ones out.

Dean, he's not showing any contempt for his customers that I see. I'm in the
computer business myself and while I have lots of customers that are
genuinely nice folks and I take excellent care of them at a reasonable
price, there are some folks who are just plain idiots or pains in the rear
end...and I'm being nice about it. Any line of business has both good and
bad customers and when confronted with a bad one I do just shiden_kai says
he (?) does...I try to give them the best service possible even if they
won't let me do what needs doing. Sometimes it has been so bad that I can't
fix a customer's machine because they're so convinced they know exactly
what's wrong and how to fix it. In those cases I do feel bad about taking
their money--but hey, they called me so what's my fault? "The customer is
always right" can be a terribly painful double-edge sword.

If you would read his message, you might just understand why shiden_kai
feels the way he does about personal info like where s/he works at...whether
you're willing to acknowledge it or not there are some folks out here on

better for you.

No, but that's an interesting one....actually they would be silly to
to do that because GM will not pay for their rental if there is no
actual problem that is fixed. Cadillac customers might be the
exception, but then we bend over backwards for them.

I'm actually thinking more about the customer that you just
repaired a coolant leak, say a water pump, and now their
rear axle is howling....of course it's all your fault, you touched
it last.

Or the one that insists on cheap brake pads and then cries
the blues when they are noisy and don't perform like they
think they should. Which is why we are often quite content
to send them on their way if they don't want the brake job
done the way that we do them. That's fine, everyone is
entitled to have the work performed on their vehicle the
way they want it done.

You know as well as I do that the price shoppers
can sometimes be your worst customers. They often
won't be happy no matter how cheap the job is.

No, the stealership, oops, I mean dealership eats the rental bill.
I have people try this scam with extended warranties all the time.

This is known as the "you had it last, you broke it" or the "it wasn't doing
that when I brought it in" defense.

I can't step into that trap. My customers buy my parts and pay my price. They
get my work and my warranty. Nobody remembers you were trying to save them

Absolutely correct. I don't mind price shoppers if they shop me first. They
waste less of my time that way.

I forgot to tell you about the guy who tried to do his own throttle body
service and filled his brake booster up with injector cleaner.

While we are talking shop, today I took a job application from a guy who just
got fired from Wal-mart because he did not use a torque wrench to tighten lug

Our dealership won't eat that type of rental bill. Customers are
often warned up front that if the complaint turns out to not be
a warrantable item, they pay the rental bill.

Probably the best policy. Even the GM dealerships have cycles where
they attempt to compete with the chain stores by selling a "cheaper"
grade of brake pad/shoe. It always causes nothing but grief and lost
income.

I'm a firm believer that at least a couple percent of people on this Earth
are idiots. Maybe you don't read the papers or watch the news to see this,
but they are out their. If you don't have any customers that fall into that
group you obviously don't have many customers.

I have many great customers that I'm very thankful to have and I have a few
idiot customers that I hope I never do see again. And yes I've had a couple
over the years that I TOLD I never wanted to see them again.

If you do have the perfect scenario where all your customers are honest,
helpful with the descriptions of exactly what their problems are and
carrying armloads of cash to pay you with....well hell Dean....that's just
great. Personally though, I think you are in that 1 or 2 percent of the
population I mentioned earlier.

Dean's leadership as a crusader for justice in the automotive repair
industry might have bolstered credibility if he'd be willing to tit-for-tat
and publish what is, I'm sure, his own lengthy vitae of action against these
opportunistic plunderers (excluding the heroic a.t.c campaign against
involuntary rotor resurfacing, which we all know well). Barring the production

Hey bud, you took the first shot by referring to me as an ageing nerd,
chastising me for naming my vehicles <what the hell is so bad about that
anyways?>, and implying that I'm socially impaired, using the USENET as a
prosthesis. I just fired back.

I'm growing tired of all these Johhny-Come-Lately's <yes, that includes you>
who know nothing about automotive mechanics chiming in and insulting those
who provide this group with good information on the repair and maintenance
of GM trucks.

Here's my point on this topic. You and others mock folks like Dean and
myself like in the following statement:

"It's quite remarkable that acouple of aging nerds who refer to each
others' vehicles with women's names in public could corner so much
attention, not to
mention expect to be taken seriously. The usenet is truly a prosthesis for
the socially impaired."

Not to be taken seriously? Give me a break. Who are folks going to take
more seriously on an automotive newsgroup, those who SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS by
giving them sound advice on how to fix their truck, or those like you, who
provide them with, well, hmmmm, NOTHING.

The reason why a "couple of ageing nerds" corner so much attention and ARE
in fact taken seriously, is because we solve problems, and regulars on this
group know they can turn to us for help when no one else can figure what's
wrong with their truck.

You make the point that I was planning to, eventually. My initial post was
intended to antagonize Dean. As he has yet to respond, I'll stop fooling
around.

This group is a tremendous resource. The contributions made by the most
frequent posters, yourself, Dean Dardwin, shiden_kai, etc. are invaluable,
in addition to being inexpensive. They are well-reasoned, and insightful. They
are worth reading.

What is not worth reading is the perpetual diatribe that has pervaded this
group during the past four to five months. I have attempted during this time to
find some technique whereby I am able, simultaneously, to skip the tripe and
also find some pleasure in following the group. It has proven impossible I
have been unsuccessful in escaping the insipid monotony of what amounts to a
cat-fight between a group of men who are ostensibly grown and obviously
talented. What is most shameful is that these same individuals, plucked from
behind their keyboards and placed in the same room would probably get along
famously.

After reading a.t.c early Friday morning, I'd had enough. Perhaps, I thought,
there was some type of illicit thrill to be had by joining the fray, so I
gave it a whirl. I am neither suprised nor disappointed to report that the
experience was wholly unsatisfying. Such vollies of personal derision are of
absolutely no value to anyone reading the group. It is, quite simply, a stupid
activity. I am particularly regretful for insulting Doc, who was wholly
undeserving.

I would ask the most frequent contributors to consider the benefits of an
entirely civil discourse on the group. Consider that there are a tremendous
number of readers like myself who, daily, step through each and every post to
the group. Each outburst is a strain on your collective credibility, as well
as being an insult and and an embarassment to you own talents. If you're
genuinely interested in solving peoples' problems, and I think you are, then
save your energies for that, and that alone.

Your pupil,

Interesting post, rab....and I was wondering why you were
putting the boots to Doc. All in all, Doc's a pretty good chap
from what I can see. I'm actually growing rather fond of
Doc and his style....(grin)

Your last sentence has some merit, but unfortunately, some of
us have attempted to save our energy for solving problems, but
there is only so much I can take from one Dean Dardwin. It's not
a new problem, it's not a problem only with me, Bob, or even
Checkmate. If you have been on some of the other newsgroups
that Dardwin happens to pop up in, you would know that he
pulls the same crap in those newsgroups, with different folks,
but still the same crap.

Unlike Doc, Bob, Checkmate, and others.....Dean never backs
down. He's never wrong, what he says is always right, even
if you can show him in black and white where he contradicts
himself....repeatedly. He's fond of calling other people liars
and thieves....if he thinks he can do that sort of stuff with
impunity...he's mistaken. I have and will continue to take
him to task and point out his hypocrisy if he continues to
beak off at or about me.

What's interesting is that to the newbies (automotively speaking)
Dean appears to be some sort of fountain of unbelievable
knowledge. To anyone that's a professional tech and has
been in the trade for awhile.....it appears that he knows his
way around Chevy Suburbans and that's about it.
Hey, he can tell you all about how to drain and fill a rear
axle and the secrets of making the gasket come off real
nice when you have to remove the cover again....but I
seriously doubt that he could give a blow by blow description
of how to actually rebuild a Chevy diff, how to properly
set the pinion bearing preload, how to set the backlash
and read a gear set pattern and adjust accordingly.
And that's only one area of expertise on a truck or
car.

If he wants to give his advice and keep his opinions
about other posters to himself....I'm willing to give
him some space. The ball is in his court. A refreshingly
silent court at the moment. (grin)
