I just got my 89 s10 blazer sport repainted black. It doesn't have a
clearcoat on it now. I was wondering if it needs a clearcoat or if
there are any benefits to it. The guy who painted it, said clearcoats
don't work well on black, since it gets hot in the summer. The
clearcoat on the old paint was very foggy. Also, is there anything I
should watch out for with this new paint job?
Thanks,
-Jaden

I would say this guy doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.

I suppose that Mercedes, Jaguar, Lexus and just about every other car
manufacturer is wrong when they put clearcoat on their dark colored cars.

I would suggest getting the paint clearcoated... It is basically a
protective coat over the paint and if you don't, the first time you go to
wax this paint job it will look like s**t... Plus, it makes the paint look
a heck of a lot better, more of a shine instead of a 'flatness'.

make sure your painter didn't use single stage paint, which, if applied
properly, is *supposed* to dry glossy without a clearcoat, and, as a rule,
of you try to put clear on top of single stage, it won't stay there very
long, even if you wet sand beforehand. Base/clear coat, (2 stage) will be
dull unless and until you apply a clear, as it is *not* designed to be used
without a clearcoat.

I'm just wondering, how much did it cost you? Was it a good deal?

Thanks,

Not always true. DuPont ChromaOne is a singlestage that can be mixed
with clear OR clearcoated per the spec sheet. I've always used it
single stage. I like single stage for several reasons:
1) Cheaper (don't have to buy clear/hardner/reducer)
2) One less step
3) Easier to touch up later (dont have to feather in color and clear)
4) Looks more like the older paint jobs (only my opinion), modern paint
jobs look deeper (like their supposed to), but it makes old cars look
different than the old laquer jobs they cam with.

Modern Urethanes are quite durable and clear is only a matter of taste.

hello my name is randy i have done auto body for 10 years i know work at ppg
making the paint for new and old cars. The guy who told you that is full of shit
clear coat protects the base coat which is the black paint it protects it from
ulra voilet light and stops it from fading. When it does fade its only the clear
that fades not the base coat.If you want more info email me at

This is not correct. It really depends on THE PAINT SYSTEM being used.
If the system is basecoat/clearcoat then clear IS REQUIRED for shine and
protection. SINGLE STAGE URETHANES DO NOT REQUIRE CLEARCOAT-you can mix
color and clear or clear over it if you desire for a deeper shine but
Urethanes can take alot of abuse without the need for clearcoat. Also,
if the clear fades, there really isn't much you can do anyway except
repaint. I have an early 90's Black Pontiac and the clear is starting
to turn white (looks great on a BLACK car), so in my opinion, using a
single stage on a black car car work OK and has advantages (easier to
touch up later if need be). Take a paint like Imron, this paint is
virually indestructable by itself (it is expensive and VERY TOXIC to
spray).
