Thanks for any advice.
Be aware that some marine engines rotate in the opposite direction from "normal"

To email me, change snot to hot
Extremely rare. Mostly because of price.
I believe there was an outboard at one time that would run in either rotation.

Mercruiser still runs counter rotating outdrives with twins. Butt, you probably
already knew that. Now get back to the VB&G, there's nobody there. :-)
Yes sir. I was getting thirsty anyway.
Seriously counter rotating outdrives are much more common than counter rotating
engines. That is an easier gearing issue. No I was referring to what I believe
was an old Mercury Outboard (I think) that could be started in either rotation.

Yeh, I knew that.

I can't comment on the dual rotational motor, as I'm not, (I don't think)
"that" old, <g> ...but I've been doin' a search tryin' to find out. Ya got my
curiosity goin' here.
<not doubting your word - JUST curious>
I'm not swearing its true either. It was an old motor and I was a little guy at
the time.

The counter rotating is done in the outdrive, not the engine. Outboards, on the other hand, can be
ordered counter rotating. I know Yamaha offers them and I'm sure others also offer them.

That's what I said. <g>
Outboards, on

That's what Bob sez.

Thanks, I'll be checkin' them out. Not that I need one. It's just the curiosity
that Bob brought out.

Well, I'm sure that if Yamaha has them Merc and Evenrude must also offer counter rotating engines.
Yamaha's reasoning for counter rotating outboard engines (instead of doing it through gearing) is so
that under heavy throttle the steering doesn't torque. I/O's on the other hand are hard mounted
and the torque is horizontal and not vertical and will not affect steering..... YMMV !!!!!
>On my yacht the "engines" turn in opposite directions. Starboard is counter.
My buddies early 70's - 48 foot yacht had twin 350's, straight inboard. Both 350's turned same
direction. It had "Paragon" cast iron transmissions that were clearly labeled port and starboard.
Motors turned in the same direction, screws turned in opposite directions. YMMV.........
I wasn't talking about ordering a counter rotating engine. Those definitely do
exist, or counter rotating outdrives, which also exist. I was talking about an
old (pretty sure it was a Mercury) outboard that could be started in either
rotation.

I thought most 2 stroke engines could be started in either direction. I had a home made go kart
when I was a kid with a West Bend 2 stroke engine that sometimes kicked and started backwards. What
a suprise the first time it happened and I backed into my mothers car :-)
I recall hearing some old boater guys talking about Mercury's "dock smasher"
outboards. If you were motoring along in forward and you needed to grab
reverse, it was necessary to shut down then restart in reverse. Not sure of
the engineering though.

ANY 2-cycle engine can be started in either direction...
