1989 k-1500 rear differential issues

hey everyone,

got a u-joint replaced today and the mechanic noticed a lot of play in
the rear end yoke. He suggested getting it replaced asap! He also
said it wouldnt be a bad idea to get the pinion bearing and seal
replaced as well. Wondering if anyone out there had this done and
what it ended up costing approximately.

I'ld question the play in the yoke. Too much play in the rearend is
possible,
but you should have a whinning noise if there is. By the time a pinion
bearing
is worn there should be noise. Replacing the bearings requires some special
tools to measure back lash, pinion depth etc. If it isnt done right, you can
mess
up a set of gears in a 1000 miles, and once they have a bad wear pattern,
its for ever.
In the old days we used to set em up with white lead, reading the pattern on
the gears.
And there are two bearings on the pinion shaft, an inner and outer, and it
requires
removing the spool ie carrier assembly to get the pinion out. To do the
job properly really requires pulling the diff unit out of the vehicle.

Wow, sounds like quite a job. I haven't noticed any whining noises,
however there is a slight vibration once i get up over 100 km/h. The
mechinc seemed to think that this is the reason the u-joint wore out
and that this new one won't last very long if it is left in this
condition. as well, there is a small fluid leak occuring as well.
