Just a few things, sadly, since my last update.... a year ago. A lot of the
art I've drawn has been for various fan-initiated projects that I'm not
free to post for the public to view. Anyway...

(Man, some of the older pieces on this page really stink. I should clear
those out. Hate to think of someone stumbling across *them* first...)

I had never actually been to your fanart page until now and I have to
say, that 'Defeated' picture gave me chills. It's haunting to see
Megatron totally defeated and looking as though he's about to cry (as
we only seem to see him angry), with Prime holding his fusion cannon
behind him.

"Betrayal" is one of the best pieces of fan art I've ever seen. I made it my
desktop wallpaper the same night you posted this update, and I've been drooling
over it just about every night since then. There's just so much detail to
absorb. I've also got a ton of comments and questions I've been meaning to
throw in your direction.

First off, I'm beyond delighted to finally, FINALLY see a Transformers artist
who actually *understands* how light sources work. (No, I'm not saying that
every artist who is not Walky sucks at what they do. Please get that out of
your systems right now. It's interfering with your digestive process.) After
months of watching Pat Lee and the Dreamwave crew demonstrate a complete
inability to render this sort of thing correctly, it's a relief and a pleasure
to learn that there *are* some people left who don't just dive into Photoshop
without having any idea how to get its magic tools to produce art that actually
looks *good* to my eyes. So, with that said, I love what you did with the
columns in the background. Love it, love it, love it.

I like the Maximal Elder, if that is indeed who he is. His cape is vaguely
reminiscent of BM Megatron's cloak.

I like the pre-Earth designs you came up with for the Predacons. Tarantulas is
obviously influenced somewhat by his Transmetal motorcycle form, which makes a
lot of sense. Waspinator appears to be a helicopter, which doesn't mesh with
his Transmetal toy, but does make a lot of sense nonetheless. I like how you
made his chest-mounted insect eyes into the canopy windows, and how his wings
became the rotor blades. Terrorsaur seems to have retained some elements of
both his CGI model and the larger wings on the Hasbro toy, and it's a good look
for him. He's a jet, I gather?

My only real complaint, and it's a small one, is that I cannot figure out for
the life of me what Dinobot transforms into. Can I have a hint? (Also, I'm
not sure I like the fact that he retained his stripe patterns. I would have
thought that'd be a strictly Earth-mode thing.)

I spent a long time moving my desktop icons around so that none of them covered
up any of the characters in this awesome piece of artwork. (Dinobot is glaring
menacingly at the Yahoo! Mail inbox.) It's just so cool that I can't stand it.

Sorry for taking so long to say this. I've been savoring the moment. :)

Yikes, and thanks! But, uh, I guess I renamed it at some point, so for
other
people, you'll find it there under "Theft of the Golden Disc:"
http://www.itswalky.com/transformers/fanart/theftofthegoldendisc.html

(The original title was "Betrayal," but then I realized that was the same
title for Wreckers #2. And now it's "Theft of the Golden Disc," despite
the CGI animation by Trent Troop based on the same theme.)

Well, I have to own up to some things. The background is almost entirely
CGI. It was done Beast Machines-style-- come up with simple geometric
shapes, texture them to hell, and add shadows and light where appropriate.
Character shadows and environment light glares were added later in
Photoshop.

The characters themselves were colored in Photoshop, of course, and that
took entirely too long and with many revisions and return trips. I usually
never spend this kind of time on a single piece of art. But damn, the
inspiration had struck...

From a lot of your comments, I don't think you read the comments under
the art. :) (Or you found another way to the art directly, but I don't see
any other links...)

The blue guy is Cryotek. According to his lengthier bio on the old
BotCon site, he coordinated the theft of the golden disc -- which is
what inspired the art. I wanted to show the moment just before
Megatron pulls a coup on Cryotek and makes tracks with the goods.

Yeah. Waspinator's a helicoptor, Tarantulas is a cycle of some sort, and
Terrorsaur
is a jet. In my little world, before the Beast Wars, everyone had pretty
much the
same name... at least phonetically. Scorponok and Megatron could both be
homages to past Transformers, of course. And I figger Tarantulas was always
Tarantulas, even though it refers to him being a spider later. But hey,
Ravage
calls him that in Agenda. Maybe Tarantulas always liked spiders. He
probably
picked out his own form to reflect that. And his name already matched.

Terrorsaur = Terrorsoar. Easy enough.
Waspinator = Warspinator. Stolen from someone else.
Dinobot = Dynobot. Eh. Whatever. Hard to make that name sound cool
regardless.

Heck if I know what they are! (As I explain in the text.) If Megatron can
be a who-can-tell (as based on his appearance before he got beastied), then
Scorponok can be a ... something with a big arm-cannon stuck somewhere,
probably a tank, then Dynobot can be... uh... I really have no idea. The
same thing Xaaron transforms into. Maybe I should give Dynobot some
wheels on his legs or something.

I just roboticized him. In a non Sonic-the-Hedgehog way.

Well, glad you like it! This piece took me a long time to coordinate and
piece
together, so I'm glad it's appreciated. I just really like Cryotek and his
place
in the BW backstory. That, and I was in Art History class at the time.

Assuming 'Betrayal' is the theft of the golden disc piece, then I'm guessing
the elder is Cryotek.

You mean "Theft of the Golden Disc."

It's Cryotek, Megatron's former mentor and main villain in the Wreckers
comic.

Well, when I grabbed the image, it was named betrayalhuge.jpg, so I assumed
that was the name of the piece. My mistake.

Yeah, but what I'm driving at was that you actually *get* that objects directly
in front of a bright light source appear very dark to the human eye. It's a
very simple phenomenon that you can check just by looking at a lamp and then
raising your hand so that it enters your field of vision, but for some reason
you just don't see it in art too often. As I said, it's profoundly lacking in
Dreamwave's artwork.

I probably did read the comments, but that was weeks ago. I guess they just
didn't stick. I was too busy drooling over the artwork. :)

Yes, very much so. :)
