So, er, how does one actually access alt.toys.transformers.moderated?
I tried searching for it in Google Groups but it doesn't show up yet.
(Although, something I did caused New Google Groups to revert back to
Old Google Groups, which I am very happy about because I hate New
Google Groups.)

Doesn't show up when I update groups on my iPad (aioe.net, or whatever the
news server is). Does it just need time to propagate? I figure if the
trolls can find it, it must be properly propagated though...

The only way the trolls can get a foothold on the new group is if folks aren't vigilant about dealing with them. So yay for vigilance!
And I think it's safe to say that the copycat troll is bored for now. He may come back, or Deathy may come back (assuming they aren't the same person). Right now, I say enjoy the respite.
And for the record, I've been able to view it just fine through Google.

How did you find it? I've tried and tried and I can only get Google
to cough up four Transformers newsgroups (this one, of course, the
defunct ATTCM, plus the fanfic and marketplace groups.)

So... yeah. That wasn't me posting. ATTM is not up and running.
The last post I made about it specifically stated that I have
it running on my local network. Nothing more. No one can connect
to it unless you are on my subnet... meaning you have to be at
my home.
Really wish I could get it going for real, but I'm not sure I can get
a solid moderation method figured out. It sucks.
Um... so... Yeah. I'll let you know when it's going for real.

Also, I see he found a way to spoof my email. So that sucks. Don't
know you're going to know it's really me now.
Um... I guess I can just email people directly? I don't know.
Suggestions on this are welcome.

If you need help, drop me an e-mail telling me what to do. I don't want to be a moderator but if I can help you get this newsgroup up and running as soon as possible, please let me know.

Thank you. I appreciate it. Right now the problem is actually that I've
never actually run a usenet server before. Getting a local newsgroup
with no moderation and some simple filters is easy. Getting a public
server going, with advanced moderation, is not that simple.
So... Unless you know some kind of UNIX genius there isn't much
that can be done. I'm studying though. Learning. Getting information
and it looks like I will have an answer in time. It will just take
some experimenting.
Anyway!
Since my email has been spoofed, and I'm sure others will be too, I
have found the one thing the troll hasn't been able to spoof yet,
although maybe it's just a matter of time.
It looks like the troll is using AIOE.ORG to impersonate others. This
isn't a difficult task. You can post as anyone if your newsreader allows
you to edit the "From" field. AIOE.ORG does not care to verify your
credentials.
If you're familiar with Google Groups you can easily check the
"Organization" by clicking on the little arrow to the right of
"Post reply" and then selecting "Show original."
If the Organization tag containts "aioe.org" then it isn't me.

Are you really talking about making a new public moderated
newsgroup for Transformers?

None of the trolls (I suspect that there are 2), are technically adept. One uses aioe.org, the other uses off-by-one-letter email accounts and Google Groups.

Probably easier to not worry about it, and occaisionally go "Oh, stupid troll got me".

Oh. Must've confused the group you were making with the other moderated group that's been made through Google of late. My bad.

I'm just saying check the Organization tag man. It isn't hard to do.
Because the troll(s) have gone apeslag around here lately. The worst is spoofing other people's net handles and email addys to post spurious crap. Also, they have been digging up posts from ATT from years ago and re-posting them as new articles. That part isn't too bad at all, just kind of annoying.
Brian. Usually they get bored and go away, but this one's got some staying power. :-)

That's not a good enough reason.
Creating a new group (and getting it propagated) is hard. It's
harder than it used to be, in fact; and it wasn't that easy the last time.
Creating a new moderated newsgroup is harder. And in trying to do this at
all, you're going to be splitting up the user base of what remains of this
group.
Worse, *it won't work*. It's not going to be significantly harder
for the troll to attack the moderated group than it is for them to attack
this group.
Concentrate on improving your filters, technical or personal; it's
much more likely to be successful.

Well, aren't you a Debbie Downer.

Usenet trolls have really gotten much lazier over the years.

They keep switching me to the new Google Groups format. The way I
switch back is to select "Set the new Google Groups as default" from
the cog menu, and at that point the menu option turns into "Revert to
the old Google Groups" and I can switch back to the old style.

The way I've found Old Google Groups is to start over at google.com
and from there go to the More tab at the top, then Even More, then
click on Groups, then scroll down to the Groups link (it's under the
"Social" category) and then click on the link to alt.toys.transformers
under My Groups. Then it stays that way for a while until the next
time Google kicks me out and makes me log back in.

It's not visible on Forte Inc's server either. Or is it Google groups
only?
