Wow. It's kind of neat to see a phrase I coined in an issue of
Toyfare; a phrase attributed to the wrong person, but hey, this guy's
attributing a lot of stuff to himself.
(Quick note: The actual full quote is "D00d Optimuz iz a Trukk not a
dumm Munky L0L!!!1", which, while in search for a good name for a
band among #wiigii! (IRC Transfan Channel), I shortened to "TRUKK NOT
MUNKY". I've also taken to calling such brain dead barely coherent
people "TRUKKERS".)
This whole campaign, for instance, you're attributing to Renaud of
bigbot.com, who, as is normal for him, simply plaigarized an existing
campaign from Trent Troop, without giving proper credit. I didn't
expect you to know this, so I thought I would drop you a line, like
I'm sure others have, to inform you that you're giving attention to
what's considered the bottom rung, mold-on-the-refridgerator section
of online Transfandom. An outright thief who doesn't even have the
common curtesy to reply to anyone who asks him about this matter, and
who immediately deletes any talk about it off his little message
board.
I thank you, the TRUKKERS of Toyfare, for your time. I'm sure you
have an article about McFarlane's latest eyesore to write about so
I'll let you go. You D00dz roxxors.

Insulting them as "brain dead barely coherent people" when they probably

Not to mention not consistent with the previous paragraph, where even you
point out that they probably didn't even know about this Renaud cat's shady

Whether or not this thing with Renaud happened, I would STILL feel they're

They made fun of Beast Wars, yes. Because it *was* a funny situation - TFs
were super-powerful, advanced machinery...and now monkeys and gators. The
skits about Jetfire explaining his technological abilities to the
feces-flinging Optimus Primal...funny. You may not have liked it, but if

commented on the improved plots and characterization of the actual show over

Grossly inane: What do you think is so inane? Ok, it's a magazine about
toys...what do you think they should do more of? To take this week's issue,
we got:
1. a letter's page which is standard,
2. then a News sectionabout various topics (GI Joe, Simpsons, Man named
Optimus prime, Toy websites, etc...),
3. then a look at upcoming toy lines
4. then a piece on Asian toys we never got based on famous movies
5.Then a piece on a Chinese factory where toys are made.
6 Twisted Mego Theatre (your inane point may work here, though I think its
funny).
7. Then news about Toys from the rest of the world.
8. A Marketplace section on second-hand prices.
9. The Top Ten Hottest Toys
10. And finally, the Price Guide.
I would argue that if you're gonna make a magazine on toys, these are all
pertinent and valid things to include in your magazine. What changes would
you make to make it less "inane"?
Completely biased: Hmmn, another tricky argument...don't know how I can
tackle it. Usually, when we say "bias" we refer to the media pushing an
agenda instead of being fair. For example, a newspaper reports that
"Firestone Tires fail in thousands of accidents!" without saying that their
rate of failure is about the same for all other tires. (I just made that
one up). So, how would you say that Toyfare is biased in how they cover the
toy industry?
McFarlanfare: You say they devote an inordinate amount of space to
McFarlane Toys. Ok, to take the latest issue again, in their "Incoming!"
section (which I believe is the largest section next to the Price guide
itself and is the part that has pictures and talks about upcoming toys).
Now, you would think if all they ever do is cover McFarlane Toys, McFarlane
will be all over this section. Well, the section is 14 pages long and
covers 17 different lines. Of these lines, McFarlane Toys is responsible
for.......exactly 1. Their "Army of Darkness" toy.
Taking another section, the Top Ten Hottest Toys, McFarlane doesn't even
have anything on the list. (Looks like Simpsons is King with 5 of the 10
hottest toys). I don't think McFarlane Toys really popped up in any other
sections either.
Now, does this prove that Toyfare in fact HATES McFarlane Toys? No, it's
obvious they like the work the company does (personally, I'm with you- I've
only bought 3 McFarlane toys in my entire life- they don't really do much
for me). But judging by the amount of sales the company does, it's clear
they're not the only ones who like the toys. You have the right to hate
everyone who has different likes than you, but it's not fair to say they're
"McFarlane's whores". I hope my "evidence" as it were is enough to
convince you that they really don't "devote so much space to McFarlane."
One last thing, I'm not trying to antagonize ya' here, just trying to
approach your arguments in a thourough and logical manner.

"Childish" being "overly opinionated". Optimal Optimus got fifth place as a
WRTIE IN VOTE (they didn't deem him good enough for their top five list that
year.). Obviously, they pay little attention to actual toys and what
collector's *like* as opposed to what they personally want to push. Beast Wars,
despide constantly being in the top five selling toys of the year for *several*
years of this magazines publication, received NO coverage. None. Look back at
the first two years of Toyfare and count the number of articles about
McFarlane's Crap, and then count the number of BW article (I'll help: It's
under three). That's a blatant preference bias, not one by actual sales or
what their customers wanted to actually SEE (Again, count what SELLED that year.
(fuck, I hope Sipher backs me up on this.). How's THAT for unprofessional,
college immature, opinionated, crap? That's it in a nutshell. I'd have less
problems if they'd just declare themselves fans, opinionated people as opposed
to any type of real toy journalist. I have no problem with jokes, sarcasm, or
low brow humor (Hey, we're Wiigii!).
Recharge
Here's how I see it. Toyfare spun out of Wizard. I certainly think their
main readership is made up of a specific segment of "fandom." This is the
segment who is just as likely to buy toys at their comic shop as hunt Toys R
Us for the latest Star Wars wave. Video game, movie, wrestling and horror
toys seem to be real in vogue among these types of collectors. For these
folks, 80's nostalgia really is 80's nostalgia (as opposed to us, who still
have Transformers in our current lives). So you see a lot of coverage on
toys from Palisades and McFarlane- the type of toys these folks like. Have
you seen the hype surrounding those Clive Barker-type figures? (I think it's
called the "Tortured Souls" line...of really freaky things happening to
freaky people, or of the "Porn star Alice and Little Red Riding hood").
Now, I bet that these lines don'teven show up on any Top 20 lists of the
general toy-buying public. But I would bet money that the percentage of
Toyfare readers who buy these lines is much higher than the percentage that
Lee's Guide's readers does.
So, you really don't see a lot of coverage on things their particular
audience doesn't like as much. The 12" Collector's Dolls gets cursory
coverage. Power Rangers and Beast Wars never got coverage either.
So, I don't think it's a "personal bias and they're ignoring they're
customers." In fact, i think your problems with them stem from the fact
that they ARE listening to their customers.
And heck, I agree with ya' there. I have no interest in a lot of "hot toy
lines" right now. If it were up to me, Toyfare would focus only on DC and
MArvel toys and Transformers.
As for as them just being fans, yeah, they were fans. Now they get paid to
put out a magazine. Hopefully, once Patyk starts his internship, he'll be
able to tell us whether they're just a buncha' kids playing at "business" or
whether they are actually professionals who have to work hard to put togther
a magazine and write articles with some ability. Hopefully, it's the
latter.

to BigBot.com, 'Trukk not munky' is ToyFare's dimwitted view that car robots
are better than Beast Wars robots. Hey, who's gonna tell us we're wrong?"
Thanks to everyone who wrote an email or sent a letter. We got their

concerned with, and we got the wheels turning. Keep encouraging the folks at
TF and hopefully other magazines, cons and such can get on the bandwagon,
which will mean more TFs for everyone. If you're going to correct their
attribution of the effort, do so gently. Bitterness is not becoming for a
fandom. They're still learning, after all.
Am I upset about how it got attributed? Yes, a it. But all and all this is a
good thing. Its not like anyone could have stopped bigbot from stealing the
petitions and rewording them, but the fandom came together and got something
done. This wasn't about ego, this was about a fandom wide effort. And I saw

Bandai was DX Insecticons and Jetfire; Takara was Microman, Diaclone and DX

I think Sky's point, and my point was, that the Microman and Diaclone had a

had Jetfire, who looked like somebody snuck a Valkyrie in...Didn't have the
same properties, really, as most of the other toys around the same time. And,
yes, neither did Roadbuster or Whirl, but they were Wreckers on Cybertron, so
that's okay that they don't look like their brothers who had adapted to earthen

Points for the man with the hoe. (Heh. Gardening joke.) Omega Supreme and
Sky Lynx were both Toy Box in origin; Bandai, meanwhile, contributed the Deluxe
Autobots in addition to the Deluxe Insecticons and Jetfire.

KIBBLE?
Jetfire's armor IS NOT kibble.
In Macross, it is known as a fast pack system, giving space mission
Valkyries
extra speed, armor, and firepower when they need it the most, with all the
Zentraedi
warships and stuff around..
And since when does it need to be removed?
The backarmor/Booster & Missle system stays on, as do the
legarmor/minithrusters, as
do the forearm armor/machineguns...
Other than the tiny little gunclip for the gunpod, (And the gun itself)
nothing needs to
be removed to TF a Valkryie from Jet to Gerwalk to Battroid.
Which also goes for Jetfire, him being a modified Valkyrie.
>Jetfire's armor IS NOT kibble.
No, but in my mind it's always sort of made him the Man-At-Arms of the
Transformers toy line. :)
>And since when does it need to be removed?
Well, you do have to pop off his forearm armor in order to press the tabs to
slide his fists out in robot mode.
Zobovor... he just doesn't quite fit together correctly in jet mode with that
armor, either. His legs look like they were designed to fit underneath the
fuselage more snugly.

Whirl and Roadbuster, together, could kick Jetfire's lame ass all over the
place. Those two ROCK.
