I wonder if this was part of Disney's attempt to make Mickey more
"hip" and "cool" and "cutting edge". I know I read somewhere that they
were thinking of re-imagining the little rodent.

For some reason, I don't think I've ever liked the Machine Wars toys.
What was the story behind them?

You might be hearing about the upcoming Wii game Epic Mickey, which is
going to feature a redesign and Oswald the Rabbit as the villain. Yes,
Oswald the Rabbit. It sounds so awesomely awesome.

The flipchanger toys were apparently rejected G2 moulds (although the
extent to which those moulds were finished is unknown, which is why I
question things like Megatron/Megaplex actually having a Megs-like
head) while the larger toys were all repaints of European-exclusive
late G1-early G2 toys. Starscream is Skyquake, a guy who was the
Decepticon leader for a time and is really freakin' awesome.

The larger toys were all European toys that were designed with
gimmicks that were neutered for the Machine Wars versions, so that's
one reason to dislike the toys. None of the toys were ever designed
to represent the G1 characters, either (with the exception of Megatron
and Mirage), so it's understandable that you might dislike them for
that reason, too.

Stuff of nightmares, it sounds like. Hah! Didn't Disney raise a fuss
because one of their actresses decided to show up in an artsy-fartsy
photo? Catch them being "cutting edge"...

Ah. This was before the time they decided that every series of
Transformers takes place in a different Universe, was it? And we'd get
some nice-ish fanfictions trying to explain why Megs decided to turn
into a jet. I think I'd read a really good one by Sky Shadow, can't
remember the name of it, though, but it starred Ravage.
