Faster, more secure checkout experience
Paper payments end this October
Beginning late October 2008, all items listed on eBay.com must be paid for using one of
the following approved payment options:
* Direct credit or debit card payment via a merchant credit card account
* PayPal
* ProPay
* Payment on pick-up
Paper payment methods such as checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com.
By January 2009, all approved electronic payment methods will be integrated into eBay
checkout. For example, buyers will be able to enter their credit card number directly into
eBay checkout, and the payment will be routed to the seller's Internet merchant account or
to their PayPal account.
Please note that the new payments policy will not apply to the vehicles categories in
Motors, capital equipment categories in Business & Industrial, Mature Audiences and Real
Estate.
They could care less about the hobbyist / small business market.
These are changes requested by the big businesses that are using eBay
as a supplement to their brick-and-mortar stores and as a supplement
to their own websites, and many are abandoning or ignoring their own
websites in favor of eBay.
Of course, the hobbyist / small business market is what made eBay
successful. I see lots of "alternatives" popping up, but they are for
niche markets. I know of at least one wargaming miniatures auction
site that has expanded into all hobbies, including action figures
(Wargames Market, now called Games 2 Trains). I'm sure there are
others.
I haven't personally sold anything on eBay in about a year and haven't
bought anything there in probably six months.
This change certainly makes it less likely that I will sell there, but
the reason I haven't bought there is the value isn't there for me
anymore. By the time I factor in shipping, I'm just as well off to
buy retail.

Just proof to show that ebay sucks.
I suspect that any seller still wishing to accept checks/money orders
will continue to do so, despite eBay's attempts to force people into
using their services. All they'll have to do is claim that it's a
"Payment on pick-up," with postage added.
Regardless it's just one more self-serving boneheaded move on their
part that does little more than alienate those who would use their
service.

For a store, that's just the way it is, but private sellers selling
stuff for under $50 or so, it's not going to be worth it anymore
because eBay is taking such a big cut of everything.
The news from eBay just continues to get worse and worse. I'm hoping
someone like Google steps in and kicks off a competitor. Sure, there
are other options, but Goggle is one of the few companies with the
bank and brand name to pull it off and attract people in large enough
numbers to make it a viable alternative to eBay.

It sounds like Ebay is going to be a lot less useful to the collector
than it used to be. I am surprised people are still putting the small
parts it takes to finish sets on auction. I used to do an occassional
auction but its not worth the trouble now with the higher fees. On
the bright side maybe toy shows will make a comeback. I always
enjoyed those and most in my area have shut down.

I'll still buy Joes. When it comes to it, if I have to resort to eBay, I'm
thinking of maybe using a prepaid debit card? Maybe get another credit card
just for Joes, funny as that sounds to me it might be the simplest solution.
eBay seems to be abandoning auctions, hopefully another company will take
it's place. I'd gladly switch.

Mason,
I also did not like the idea of Paypal having access to my normal bank
account (concerned about security). So I went and opened a savings account
at a different bank and put in the minimum required ($100) to not have a
monthly service charge - that is the bank account I then linked to my Paypal
account. I add to it occasionally as needed to maintain the minimum balance
if I use it to pay for items through Paypal (or transfer funds back to the
savings account from Paypal if I have a balance from selling stuff). Been
set up that way for three plus years without a problem.
Just a suggestion of a work-around for you.
