Saw recent footage tied to the Aghanistan campaign of the Royal marine doing
a massed beach assault wearing desert DPM uniforms.
They were NOT wearing headgear from the footage I saw

My question is: has anyone seen, or have knowledge of exactly what kind of
head gear they would wear in such a situation, or should have worn based on
the aforementioned footage.

I have done a kitbash, using the BBi Royla marine figure swapped to 21C SAS
Scudhunter desert DPMs and boots.
All the belt gear has been from the BBi set to the figure.
I currently have the 21c desert floppy hat with the side brims rolled up
underneath the radio head set, instead of the green marine beret.

Would this be correct?

If anyone knows, LMK please.

I saw an extended clip of that same beach landing {Just a guess at it being the
same landing you saw}, about five minutes worth {I think it took place in Oman,
it's late so my memory could be mistaken}, the film footage was taken
throughout the day of the landing. I saw the DPM floppy, the beret, and the DPM
helmet all in use at one point or another with the helmet being seen the most
{I'm about ready to break down and make that bloody modern British helmet}.
I've done a lot of digging for pix over the past few weeks and I haven't found
but three pictures of unidentified units of Brits actually in Afghanistan {I
found a number of Spec Ops type pix dressed in a cross of Afghan clothes and
western civi garb, all unidentified units or nationality though, there's a lot
of file footage being used right now due to lack of press access} and one was
with the floppy and the other two were with the helmet. Sorry I can't help
more. BTW, most of what I've found came by either Sky News or the BBC News
websites, that or the ever unreliable British tabloids, they've been worth a
look. I read that members of the Special Boat Service begin preparing for
further deployments of British troops after landing at Bagram airbase outside
Kabul but I haven't had much luck finding good close up pictures, a bunch from
a distance but that's about it there, so far. My guess is we'll see a lot more
over the next two weeks as far as more detailed photojournalism.

Obvious answer. Royal Marines are so well conditioned they don't need
anything more than a beret . . and that's only to keep the sun off their
heads :-)

Serious answer. I have a few photographs/illustrations here. Not sure what
exactly what type/designation the helmet is but I have long wondered why
no-one has produced a 1:6 scale version yet. I will try to post the pix
later. If I can't post to the ng I will e-mail them to you.

Tabloids, British or otherwise, are supposed to be unreliable. That's their
job ;-)

PLEASE ... PLEASE!!!

I made a few up from those terrible knockoff Brit Joes they had out some
years ago but the were disappointing.

I've purchased some loose BBI SAS helmets [black], and have some spare 1:6
Brit DPM camo fabric set aside to make covers for them. Until something
better comes out, those will have to do. I'm going to be doing some
pictures today of my Royal Marines and I'll post them later tonight [boy is
off work today so it's PLAYTIME!].

Ken, They had a special on US television a couple of weeks ago [can't
remember if it was on the Disocovery Channel or History Channel] with an
hour long show on the Royal Marines [it was a show on the RM mountain
warfare course]. Though this wasn't a desert theatre, they showed some
background footage, with a wide diversity of headgear in operations [beret,
patrol cap, floppy cap, helmet]. The helmet seemed ubiquitous though. I
just went through the Osprey book on the RM [39-93] and its about the same
[HEY! you started this with me when you sold me that Royal Marine Falklands
Figure!!!] :-D!!!.

Hi,
To be honest with you, if you want to do an Afghanistan diorama with
Royal Marines, they currently have to conform with stipulations....and
wear the green lids. BUT on beach landings such as you saw....then
whichever headwear they want. Special Ops marines tend to go towards
boonie hats, same as Tropical Uniforms for them, but obviously desert.

Arrow - you'd be pretty on the mark to use the boonie's in my opinion.
The green beret is, as said, being used at the mo, but that it guar
dduty they are on...for patrols/ops boonies or kevlar helmets (and no
one has made one of those yet as far as I'm aware)

Where did you get the British DPM fabric? I could use some of this oh so very
badly! Once I get some I'll make you a karma British DPM Helmet when I make
mine;-)

Combat Hero produced a pair of really nice British woodland camo uniforms
but they didn't bother with a helmet. The result is one uni with a flak vest
and a boonie hat (always a good mix) and another with a chest rig and a
peaked patrol cap. Unfortunately not enough usable material in either to
make a cover.

The closest I have seen to the base colour for the dessert camo cover was
the cloth cover from the CC MOPP carded accessory set from 3 years ago.
Unfortunately it was glued to the helmet and was a real bitch to remove
without ruining it. It would still need to be coloured to give the correct
dessert camo effect and you would have to find (or cut down) some tape to
finish it off.

I guess the BBI SAS helmet might be as close as you could get to the correct
shape of the current British infantry helmet but I wonder if a Pro-Tec
helmet with the sides cut off could work?

Didn't one of the Sunny Smiles figs from a few years ago come with a British
Helmet? I seem to remember someone mentioning it as being handy for
"Starship Trooper" kitbashes as well....

If they did one I never saw it. I can only remember their outfits coming
with boonie hats, berets or ski hats. The hats were usually the best things
they did :-)

Sunny Smile did do a modern British helmet, basically it was to the Modern
British helmet what the first 21st Vietnam helmet was to the U.S. Service
helmet, pretty much unrecognizable.
