Is that all you do anymore, jk?...one liners, blue clickies and advertise
your web site? Then, perhaps I was wrong and this is a wasteland...how sad
is that?
KC
Could be worse.
--
JL
True enough but jk had a wealth of knowledge and could get a discussion
going. Even or especially disagreeing with him could really stretch your
mind. Who's gonna fill his shoes?
KC
Wealth of knowledge, no; scattering of information, yes.
-Al-
Ok...to each his own opinion.
Peace,
KC
If you were willing to osculate his derriere, he would then condescend
to quote his favorite passages from previously published materials by
other authors, even his deconstruction of Crowley's Book of Thoth is
just a stating of the obvious, with the added presumption that Crowley
needs to be explained to us moronic illiterates.
> Even or especially disagreeing with him could really stretch your
> mind.
If one wanted to learn how to blame everyone else for ones own personal
cultus paranoia that yes, i suppose he did have an advantage there, but
null content verbiage is not something i seek out, have you looked at
his web site?
Who's gonna fill his shoes?
He has his own yahoo group, you can make an appointment to osculate his
derriere at his convenience and there is a pay pal link so you can
financially support his misanthropy.
For all his tough guy rhetoric he left here, no one 'kicked him out' i
doubt he would ever admit he was shamed by various people willingness to
tell him just how much he resembled the anatomical orifice he was so
fond of comparing others to but it seems to me that when the general
consensus turned against him he left, rather than try to modify his
rhetoric so that his editorial abilities were not such a waste of time
to read, and that, not just here, he is routinely banned from various
Tarot forums for his aggressively anti social behavior in them.
Of course ... its always everybody else's fault, the game balls and yams
just cant handle the "Truth" when he claims to possess it, of course
getting him to do more than claim to possess it is another issue altogether.
I have often praised his editorial capacities, but he seems to have a
morbid aversion to people expressing any sort of original thought about
the tarot, and by implication, anything else.

By that I meant that old JK knows a fair amount about the history of
the Tarot, and the mechanics of the symbolism, but he doesn't have
any appreciation for the Tarot. He doesn't really understand it. It
isn't alive for him, it's just a collection of images. A. E. Waite
suffered from the same limitation of understanding, and I'm sure
Waite never realized his limitation, either. You can't make a person
deaf from birth appreciate music.
-Al-
He is certain that he knows everything. When a person achieves that
level of certainty, their minds are closed, and they are incapable
of learning anything.
-Al-
Ok, I take your point but I think you're being a bit too critical. He did,
in fact, inspire some very good threads. I don't mean to imply that he is
the only one that can do it...he is just the one I saw do it. I did not
much agree with him when it came to Thoth but I did learn from his
perspective as a counter-point to my own. AND, I didn't kiss up.

Not in a long while and with no great ambition to do so now. It is flat by
comparison to the form we used to get going here. It is not just jk I miss
but a lot of the people left when he did...or he had a really full sock
drawer.:-)

Oops, that's where I fell out with him most. It was a forum free to all and
he had as much chance to learn from others as they did him. When you put a
price on it...it changes into something entirely different. Thanks for
refreshing my memory.

Yes, but it could be done if you had a big enough hammer that he couldn't
ignore it.

Now, I don't see him that way. I see him as tenacious, even dogged in his
stance but if you could come up with something he couldn't refute he
acknowledged it, though perhaps not directly. He did tend to forget that he
gave ground shortly there after, though.

Ok...I basically agree with this. He is a historian and he does study the
tarot from a textual relevance rather than as you say 'alive' but he is a
good balance for those who are weak in these areas and strong in others. I
guess I just feel that every link in the chain is significant, especially
when there is something to be mined.
KC
Nothing wrong with knowing the history and the symbolic structure of
the Tarot. It just isn't enough, in and of itself. It's like
studying the history of Voodoo without ever having been possessed by
the spirits. It can never give a true insight into what it's all
about. There is superficial, external understanding, and then there
is internal, immediate wisdom. Ideally, you combine the two, and you
have real knowledge.
-Al-
I do not disagree with this at all. BTW, do we still shorten posts that are
getting really long or do you all like to keep them flowing?
TIA,
KC
The sensible ones trim the posts, those lacking common sense post
the entire thread. The really foolish ones complain about having
their comments cut out when a thread is trimmed.

he has been removed from more than one forum due to his

usenet has not the same population it once had, and so it
does not so often draw the attention of massive egos whose

I doubt it was shame. probably a lack of attention,
insufficient participative throughput. many have
criticized usenet for this facet, despite its
original sparcity of participant (to me it seems
like a return to the early days, but with many
more newsgroups from which to choose and a few more
crazy whackos off their medication than before).
>...he seems to have a morbid aversion to people

I don't mistake his challenge as aversion. my
interpretation is that what interests him draws
his most vicious criticisms, and his repeated
and incisive questioning tends to flesh out what
route he actually wishes to take through the chat,
even when he becomes acid, but before he
disassembles into name-calling and vitriolic spew.

A predictively boring troll living under an uninteresting bridge of null
content verbiage. A 'style' that objects to other styles.
How often can anything or anyone be referred to as any particular non
sequitur before a constant reiteration of such null content verbiage
begins to weary, to say nothing of its inaccuracy if allowed as a
reasonable statement.
Some one actually put forward a 'torretts syndrome' defense of the
Karlin & its ilks style, but as i wrote at the time, the torretts
syndrome defense fails when it can be seen to do so, i.e. when properly
osculating that particular derrière it couldn't be nicer.
In all my years on the net i have only once, and that only threatened,
to tell some denizens of a particular group to go FAQ themselves:)

perhaps a shade more liberal) but in both camps supporters were more

widespread, the conglomerates dictated economic policy, and with few
outstanding exceptions, politicians' reputations were low."

Yes, and maybe people can reach something remotely resembling consensus. It
seems to me that one of the main obstacles is the greatest advantage
also...that of free thinking.

Yes, and in the earlier days it seemed he was less combative and more
tenacious. I can do tenacious and much can be learned by someone who will
defend their thought on a matter.
Yeah, spew is pretty much indicative of an impasse point. I have thought at
times that it was all an act by him (jk) to draw a person out. Of course,
if he found a chink in your armor he'd go for it but, as you say, he was

Ultimately, my intent is to discuss tarot and related matters moreso than
personalities. I'm totally open to how to get to the goal.

Joey, the good news for you is that, unlike so many other moronic
illiterates, your life had a purpose.
You will be a footnote in the chapter of my life, "The Practical
Benefits of Earthworms and Astral Lavae".
Congratulations. You made it.
The bad news for you is that my very first comment to you, all those
years ago, you know---"You're a liar."---seems to have been all too
true.
You really ought to stop lying quite so much.
That reckoning with Maat is already going to be rough for you that
way.
So long.

No, from comments you may have missed I understand
Margaret is no longer of this world. Makes you wonder
how many people had hosiery compartments.
Like a lot of USENET though much of the discussion is
going on in proprietory fora I understand.
It's all gone social networking where you kind of have a
GUI pad and shoot out links - whether it's the equivalent
of atuomated updates to the kinds of SIGs (Special
Interest Groups) that were an ealry hybrid of LISTSERV-
style lists and formal organisations such as institutes or
simply giving a virtual poke and, like, going "you're my
fwend now..."
Much of the demise can be said to be down to the withdrawal
behind lines by academic sites, the vestigialising of the
JANET sector, if you will; a lot of the older academic types are
still active on-line--for example some of the guys who
coded the KERMIT standard for communication and
remote logins are knocking about in the uk hierarchy,
for example, but mainly from home now broadband is
the watchword.
There are other early figures who were instrumental in
the first USENET and JANET experiments also I
gather, but I'm less certain of their credentials as
this predates my own time. The KERMIT guys I can
kind of vouch for.

It should still be a forum open to any with a genuine
interest in the tarot, for the discussion of tarot.

The astute may have gathered it is no longer the
alt.tarot FAQ but JK's FAQ.
This raises the interesting question of how much of
the original FAQ - assuming he was not the original
author/maintainer (before my time but implied in the
text of earlier versions) survived the occam's razor
of his previously mentioned editorial acumen.
Interestingly it is a razor which can indeed affect
one's vision, depending how it is used.
Sometimes keeping a thread going can be a nick of time maneouvre
in the world of web-based interfaces.
