I cannot find Alec Frankland in the Frankland Colls. in Burke's.
The chatelaine of the magnificent Palladian-style mansion, Henbury Hall, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, Naomi de Ferranti, DL, died 5 November, 2001.
She was the second wife of Sebastian de Ferranti, millionaire former head of the family electronics firm, and the couple were friends of the Prince of Wales (Henbury being one of his favourite erections) and Princess Margaret.
Indeed, once while staying with the de Ferrantis, the Princess was taken to neighbouring Cholmondeley Castle where HRH mistook the thick green duckweed on a small ornamental pond for grass, and fell in. The Royal legs were quickly dried, but her good humour took longer to return.
Henbury, one of the greatest houses to be built in the 20th century, set in 1000 acres, is based on the Palladio's 16th century Villa Rotunda in Vicenzo, northern Italy, and was built by the de Ferrantis between 1984 and 1986.
Before marrying de Ferranti, in 1983, she was Naomi Angela Rae, wife of Mr J.E.K. Rae. Her daughter Jennifer married in 1989 (later div), as his second wife, the then Viscount Chelsea, later 8th Earl Cadogan.
Naomi's husband is a son of Sir Vincent de Ferranti. Pioneers of public electricity supply, the family fortune was founded by Sebastian's grandfather, another Sebastian (1864-1930), who was only 11 when he produced a little electric arc light with the aid of a bichromate battery; at 14 he was making a dynamo.
The de Ferrantis are one of those families who have frequently married into the peerage, and connections include alliances with the descendants of the Earls Temple of Stowe, the Earls of Eglinton & Winton, and Earls of Crawford & Balcarres.
Mrs de Ferranti's funeral takes place on 12 November, at St James's Church, Gawsworth, at 2p.m.
Captain James William Prince-Smith, 13/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own), of Richmond, Surrey, and Morton Hall, Norwich, Norfolk, only son and heir of Sir (William) Richard Prince-Smith, 4th Baronet, and his first wife, the former Margaret Ann Carter, died suddenly, 7 November, 2001, aged 42. I think unmarried.
The 72-year-old Baronet has one surviving child, a daughter, and no other male collateral to succeed to the title (cr. 1911).
The Baronet's niece -a Hattersley Smith -recently married Baron McGowan's heir, the Hon Harry McGowan.
So extinction beckons for another Baronetcy.
Daphne Joan Ryder, who died 7 November, 2001, was the daughter of John Greig, of Ascot, Berkshire, and widow of Major Ernle Terrick Dudley Ryder (of the Earls of Harrowby), who was born in 1906 and was killed off Sumatra in 1942. She was mother of 2 daughters, Elizabeth Vernon & Anthea Brown.
Barbara Charlotte, the Dowager Lady Bannerman, who died 7 November, 2001, aged 91, was the daughter of Lt-Col Alec Cameron, OBE, IMS, and married in 1932, Lt-Col Sir Donald Arthur Gordon Bannerman, 13th Baronet, who died 16 September, 1989.
She was the mother of two sons, Sir Patrick Bannerman, 14th Baronet, who enjoyed the title for a matter of weeks, dying 21 November, 1989; and Sir David Bannerman, OBE, 15th Baronet, who is father of four daughters. Scanning Debrett's for sight of the heir pres. I can see none.
Who's Who does not say 'Heir: none', and I cannot see details of the Letters Patent in Burke's. Is this one of those baronetcies that could pass to a female?

Vera Margaret Newson-Smith, who died 12 November, 2001, aged 83, was the first wife of the late Sir John Kenneth Newson-Smith, 2nd Baronet, who died in 1997.
She was Vera Margaret, daughter of Dr Wilfred Greenhouse Altt, CVO, CBE, and married Sir John in 1945.
The baronetcy had been created for her father-in-law, Sir Frank (Edwin), Lord Mayor of London, 1943-44.
Her husband succeeded to the baronetcy in 1971, but they were divorced in the same year. Did she get to be Lady Newson-Smith?
She leaves issue, a son Sir Peter, 3rd Baronet, and two daughters, Susan and Jane.
Lady Vassar-Smith, who died 9 November, 2001, aged 91, was the widow of Sir Richard Rathbone-Vassar-Smith, 3rd Baronet, who died in 1995.
She was Dawn Mary, daughter of Sir Raymond Whybrow Woods, CBE, Solicitor to the Post Office, (who d. 1943), and the former Maud Collins, and married Sir Richard, nephew of the 2nd Baronet, in 1932. He inherited the baronetcy a decade later.
She was the mother of Sir John Vassar-Smith, 4th Baronet, (b.1936), and a daughter, Juliet, (b. 1941).
Pauline Alison Baring, who died 3 November, 2001, was the second wife, from 1950, of Edward Thomas (Neddy) Baring, (1903-80), cousin of the Baron Northbrook. She was the daughter of Frank Fawcett Copland, of Sydney, and former wife of Timothy Walter Boden.
Pamela Nancy Uniacke, (nee Flint), who died 1 November, 2001, was the widow of Richard Uniacke, and daughter of Major Eric Charles Montagu Flint, DSO, of Hembury Castle, near Torrington, Devon (of the Landed Gentry Family).
She had two brothers, John & Ted, and a sister, Elizabeth, who married (i)Capt Peter Foljambe, who was killed in action in 1944, leaving a son, Edward, now 5th Earl of Liverpool, and (ii) Major Andrew Gibbs, MBE, TD, of the Barons Aldenham & Hunsdon.
Mrs Uniacke leaves a step-son, Anthony. I have no L.G. of Ireland, but the Uniacke family certainly features therein.
Helen Dalrymple, who died at Ayr, Scotland, 13 November, 2001, aged 71, was the second wife of the Hon Hew North Dalrymple, second son of the 12th Earl of Stair, KT, DSO, DL.
She was Miss Helen M.W. Phillips, and married Mr Dalrymple, at Ayr, 20 January, 1983.
Her husband, born 27 April, 1910, had married firstly, 20 June, 1938, Mildred Helen, former wife of the 4th Baron Oranmore & Browne, and daughter of the Hon Thomas Henry Frederick Egerton, of the Earls of Ellesmere. Mildred died in 1980.
Mrs Dalrymple has a step-son Robert, (b. 1946), a godson of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

The late Edward Thomas Baring's first wife was Virginia, daughter of "John Barry Ryan of New York". The Countess of Airlie was born Virginia Fortune, daughter of John Barry Ryan of Newport of Rhode Island. Are they related?

How is Edward Thomas (Neddy)Baring a cousin of the Baron Northbrook? I can't find him listed in Burke's.

I would assume they are the same person as John Barry Ryan was from both New York and Newport, Rhode Island. It isn't uncommon to be from both places.

The 1999 Burkes shows male descendants of a younger uncle of the 12th baronet, not all of whose lines are brought down to the present day. The heir will be somewhere amongst them. -- Chris Pitt Lewis

Or given the dates involved, The John Barry Ryan, father of The Countess of Airlie could actually be John Barry Ryan, Jr. and be a brother of Virginia who married Edward Thomas Baring.
The 2nd Baron Lucas of Chilworth, died suddenly, 10 November, 2001, aged 75.
The Lady Dorothy Heber Percy, (nee Lygon), who died at Oxford, 13 November, 2001, aged 89, was the youngest of the four daughters of the 7th Earl Beauchamp, KG, PC, KCMG, and the former Lady Lettice Mary Elizabeth Grosvenor, sister of the 2nd Duke of Westminster.

Breathtaking Newport, with its magnificent Gilded Age cliffside palaces, was once "home" to many prosperous New York families during the summer months.

Not full-time for whole summers, as in the old days, and certainly not so much in the Gilded Age palaces, which for the most part are no longer private residences. Nowadays "Newport society" consists mainly of full-time "islanders."

Almost as interesting as the Mitfords, except that they were literary inspirations rather than writers, and apparently not politically minded (in the way that at least three of the Mitford sisters were).
I remember an interesting segment with Ladies Sibell and Dorothy in ARISTOCRATS, where they talk about their rambunctious lifestyle in the 1920s. After reading a bio of Waugh, I see what they mean.
Unfortunately, at least two of the sisters had less than happy lives - Lady Lettice divorced or was divorced by her husband (a grandson of a Duke of Richmond & Lennox); Lady Mary was apparently an alcoholic, per the Waugh bio.
And apparently all the sisters hated their eldest brother's wife.
