She is indeed related to the Royal family but I am still working on
finding out how. She is sometimes referred to as Her Serene Highness,
so perhaps not that distantly related.

Sometime ago the succession law was changed to allow for female
succession. So perhaps the only daughter of the Crown Prince and
Princess Somsavali, H.R.H. Princess Bajra Kitiyabha, is being treated
as a sort of Heiress Presumptive. Thus the mother of same is given a
special status??. However, the law was very poorly drafted and
actually says that only a daughter of a King can succeed, so she is
not technically eligible until the Crown Prince succeeds. Anyway,
Princess Bajra is the only child of the Crown Prince who enjoys the
style of Royal Highness, the others are just Mom Chao (Serene
Highness). Her mother was made a Royal Highness in her own right,
retained after her divorce. She is closely related to the Royal
Family, particularly the Queen's own house of Kitiyakara.
